The best thing for Matt Simms to do would be to go play Arena League Football and burn the place down week after week. It worked for Kurt Warner.
Agree with that as well. Either way, it's time for Matt Simms to put the Jets in the rear view mirror and move on. He'll be wasting precious time in his career if he stays.
Brady Quinn is a mediocre QB at best. You need to stack Simms up against David Garrard assuming that Garrard is ready to go and he's not going to stack up well there. A better question is who would the backup be if Sanchez and Simms had both been healthy at the start of the year? The answer there is most likely Sanchez although it's possible Geno Smith might have started on the bench as the backup. Simms caught a real break with the Sanchez injury. It gave him some time as the backup QB on the depth chart. Now he's getting hurt by the fact that the Jets look competitive. David Garrard is the beneficiary of that trend.
I don't hate Matt Simms at all. I just never want to see him playing QB for the Jets because that would likely be an abysmal failure and it would mean that Geno was hurt badly enough to miss time. I don't believe in fairy tales. I believe that every time a fairy tries to tell a tale somewhere a Jets fan gets squished. Look, if it was common for QB's who had failed in college and not gotten drafted to do well I'd think "oh, look! There's the Jets opportunity to get in on that action!" It's not common for that to happen and in fact it probably has only happened a small number of times in NFL history (Matt Cassell being the latest iteration.) Kurt Warner had one good season in college, failed to get drafted and then worked his way to a great career via the Arena Football League and NFL Europe. Who else goes on the scrub in college but good in the pros list? Anybody?
It's no different at all:rofl: Richard Todd started for us for 6+ seasons and won 2 playoff games. In his lone title game he threw FIVE INTs which is 2 more than Mark in his 6 playoff games. Todd threw 4 TDs and 12 INTs in 4 playoff starts(one at home). The 2 are not comparable. Months after that title game app in 1982 we drafted a QB in the 1st rd. He didn't play against those same players and outside of 2-3 plays Mark looked really good this preseason.
I don't know either. All I do know is that the Jets (and I assume that means the coaching staff and Idzek (not just Idzik alone)) feel Simms is the second best QB on the team and good enough to play in the NFL. Odds are at some point we will see him try to prove that.
Ok, I suppose I should have mentioned that it makes a difference when you have receivers that can't catch and a sieve for an offensive line and you are running for your life and STILL have to make the throws...but I cut you some slack on those details.
Jags if they don't draft TB is a possibility. Vikings need a QB. Even Zona could be a suitor. Anyplace is better than rotting away on the Jets bench IF Simms ever wants to be a NFL QB. CFL or the AFL are also in the mix. Simms needs experience and he won't be getting here in NY. Time for the kid to move on.
Time for him to move on? this is his first year on an active roster, he was long shot to make any NFL roster. This was his first step, maybe he won't ever become a good QB in this league but he took a HUGE step this year making our roster and being our #2 QB(for now). He's learning EVERY day and hopefully getting better. Maybe he gets his chance somewhere down the road, he doesn't need to abandon his dreams and go to the Arena league just yet.
Junc, the kid isn't Tebow II. Simms going to the CFL or AFL would only enhance his experience and flatten out his learning curve quite a bit quicker than if he simply rots on the Jets bench waiting for a blowout or a injury. Simms needs experience to go with his natural talent and its really hard to get the required experience when you never get to play. Bottom line is, Simms needs to play and that ain't gonna happen here.
You never know when the opportunity to play will come, he's only a play away from coming in and if he doesn't he'll play more next preseason. He's likely never going to be a starter so he can be a quality backup. There's nothing wrong with that.
You really don't know if Simms will ever be a starter or not. One thing is certain and that is, if Simms never plays, he'll never get a chance to compete for a job. I'm pretty sure Simms doesn't wake up in the morning thinking about being a backup QB. True competitors don't think that way and Simms has his dad's moxie among other things. If Simms gets a opportunity to compete for a starting job anywhere else, he'd be a damn fool to stay here. The DG signing may have the unintended consequence of motivating Simms to go somewhere and really compete for playing time.
He's running low on cash...and needs to fleece another mil while he still can. His ski boat probably needs a little maintenance too. :rofl:
he just earned a roster spot for the first time. To leave and go to a lower level and face lower level competition isn't necessarily the best thing for him.. No players thinks of themselves as a backup but the reality is he'll be a backup. He's under contract, he can't go to another team if he thinks there's a better shot. Simms is in his pro infancy, he'll learn from a vet like Garrard. This isn't a negative for him, it's a positive.
That's exactly the point Junc. As long as he's on the Jets, barring a catastrophic injury, he'll be a back up. Once his contract is up, he'll be outta here on the first thing smokin if there's opportunity out there. There is no reason at all for Simms to stay beyond his contract. Hopefully, he won't be the next Qb named Matt to fail. There are other Qb coaches and vets to learn from Junc.
That's his right, if he can find a better situation when he is a FA then good for him. I don't think anyone is going to bring him in to be a starter.
