This makes little difference...Richard Todd took us to a title game too

Ask many young people today and they will say, who the hell is Richard Todd?

You're aware that Matt Flynn threw 6 TD passes in an NFL regular season game but blows chunks right?

Seriously, there is no reason to believe that Matt Simms is an NFL QB at this point. We're in fantasy land with him because he did very well against backups in a pre-season game. The very well wasn't even very well BTW it just looked damn good compared to the other two guys at the time.

Hunh? This is ridiculous. It's not about his arm, it's about being able to make plays when windows of opportunity aren't as wide open as they are against a third team defense. There are plenty of strong armed bums out there who can sling it against inferior competition.

He's not interested but there is no one I'd rather see more as an assistant to David Lee than Pennington. Garard as a b/u - ok. Coming back as a coach? - meh. Give me Chad for asst QB coach.

Garrard will give Geno an ear to talk into on the sidelines when issues come up that he needs to talk about. Brady Quinn can't do that because he's never been a successful QB. Sanchez was that ear and now he's gone.

There is nothing to think about. People inside like Simms a lot and if Quinn can't become the number 2 after 3 weeks he never will. It's Simms job to lose.

That just comes with experience. If you have the tools to play the position you can learn the rest. If the Jets didn't think he could play he wouldn't be the backup..or wait, do you think he can't? Based on what?

the best solution twould be that Simms performance in preseason was SO IMPRESSSIVE that some Tannenbaum quality desperation GM in the NFL will offer Idzik a draft pick for him

The Jets just signed David Garrard.

Why would they do that if they had Geno Smith, Matt Simms and Brady Quinn?

You don't hire an injury-prone guy in questionable condition to be your third-string QB. The third-string guy *has* to be there and available if you need him because otherwise you're playing Jeremy Kerley at QB if Chad and Fiedler both go down in the same game.

So I'm going to say with some confidence that if David Garrard actually can get through the physical ordeal of running a lap or two he's probably going to be the Jets backup QB when he lands on the sidelines.

The question is whether the Jets cut Brady Quinn or Matt Simms at that point. Either of the two of them fulfills the need for a third-stringer who is not likely to keel over two plays after he hits the field.

Innumerable guys with big arms have failed in the NFL because they couldn't just "learn the rest". Folks within the organization may be intrigued by Simms' tools, but that's a far cry from thinking he's a satisfactory back-up. Third string guy is likely never gonna see the field. If the organization had faith in Simms as the back-up, Garrard never would have been signed. If DG is healthy, he'll be the guy.

They signed him because they have two weeks to see if he has anything left and it doesn't cost them a roster spot in the process. If he survives those two weeks I see him as the number three and a mentor to Smith, not the number two..not at this point.

Hey, I don't disagree with that..there have been plenty of people who weren't smart enough to get out of grade school much less high school or college without help. I just don't think Simms is one of them. I haven't seen a thing to say he can't be a viable number two and the Jets seem to think he can. I also don't think anybody would have signed Garrard but the Jets.

You're in a playoff race at 7-4. Geno Smith drops back and takes a big hit. He's down, no idea for how long.

Who do you insert at QB into that game, in the middle of a game that could have playoff implications, David Garrard or Matt Simms?

    Please don't be obtuse here.

If you think Matt Simms hits the field over a proven veteran who has experience in pressure games you're not understanding the NFL, or the dynamics of any competitive sport, that well.

Young players lose games they shouldn't in their first few starts even when everything else is rosy. It's part of the rookie condition. Chad went 1-2 in his first 3 starts in a season where he would wind up as one of the best QB's in the NFL. There is no way the Jets are inserting Matt Simms (or any other untested QB) into a competitive playoff race late in the season unless they have no other choice.

Signing David Garrard is about creating other more competitive choices to put in late when a couple of losses will cost you the season.

1 game does not consist as a proving point. If you can't do something multiple times in a row, you can't truly do it at all.

The best thing for Matt Simms to do at this point is get out of here and go someplace where he'll get a chance to play. It won't happen for him here barring catastrophic injury to Geno and now DG.

Whoever is active and I think it will be Simms. We will know soon enough. Oh, and you have that same situation now..who do you want in there Quinn who has played in the NFL or an untested 2nd year player like Simms. The Jets have decided they want Simms.
