Our D has blown many leads but did you see that number the other night? the last time we had a 4th qtr lead by at least 8 and lost was 1999. Our D isn't turning laughers into losses, they usually choke in close games.
Don, I would have thought we have those kind of players on the field now. I agree that the killer instinct should come from inside but sometimes, that instinct can be taught.
That really was an astonishing statistic. 8 points is not a lot and I bet there isn't another team in the league that goes back that far without a loss in that situation.
We don't have many laughers at all Junc. We more often than not, are in dogfights to the very last tick of the clock. It shouldn't always have to come down to a FG for a win when simply making a 1st down or a stop would seal the deal. I'd like to see more Jets QB's take a knee for a win than depending on Folk to make a FG with no time left.
Every position on the field is a skill position. It wasn't 'lucky' that Folk made the field goal just as much as it wasn't 'lucky' that Geno threw the passes to get them there just as much as it wasn't 'lucky' that the WRs didn't drop those balls. We have a good kicker who rarely chokes. That is not luck. The only way luck plays into football is when the ball takes a weird bounce or the wind plays tricks. This game was in a dome.
Folk didn't exactly put that ball down the middle but it did go thru. Cumberland catching that pass after it bounced off his hands, off the Atlanta safety, and back into his hands, was LUCK. Same with the Jones and his one handed grab. Yes Mayhem, luck had a part to play in this game and for once, the Jets were beneficiaries of it. It won't always be that way so isn't it better to put the game away instead?
The Jones catch wasn't luck. There was a PI on that play because Cro was holding his other arm. The catch made no difference. The luck plays were decidedly against the Jets in this game. The forward fumble that Atlanta recovered and the PI call on the goal line. Those are decidedly luck plays that had a huge impact against us on the road. We overcame both of them. This was a well played game by both teams. The Jets played well on O, D and special teams. They finished on the road in a very tough place to play. I'm as dark as it gets but when I actually get to watch a good football game and my team brings it for 60 minutes, I'm not going to bitch about it. The Monday night game was the type of game that makes me a football fan. There are far to few of them. I really can't understand the nitpicking on this one.
With parity in the NFL there are not many blowouts, The NFL likes it that way. During most blowouts what do most people do. Switch the channel for another game. I think our Monday night football game was watched to the bitter end by a lot of views who otherwise would have went to bed early. I am one of them. PLEASE STOP with the fire Rex bullshit. Its getting real old.
Cumberland's forward fumble/catch wasn't luck? Really? Not being able to put teams away will bite us at some point down the road. Just like any landing you can walk away from is a good landing, any win is a good win. Again, lets see if the after the bye week, the Jets can close a game without turning it into a deathmatch. The schedule is softer so it should be a pretty good indicator if this team does indeed, have a killer instinct or not. Hopefully, the Refs won't get blamed if we lose too.
especially how bad we were at blowing big leads in the 90s. Folk hasn't hit that many game winners, most games in the NFL are close. most teams are capable of making a playoff run, it's why we have 9-7 teams win SBs
This is the NFL though, particularly on the road. Last team with the ball has a great shot at winning the game. The Jets beat the Bucs because the calls mostly went the Jets way. The Falcons almost beat the Jets because the calls mostly went their way. I'm thinking the Jets got a gift from the Falcons because Matt Ryan scored too fast the second time. Tom Brady milks that clock down and the Jets have maybe 40 seconds on the clock when they get the ball back.
I disagree that the calls mostly went the Falcons way Monday night (an in turn that's why they almost beat the Jets).. I thought they let a lot go in the Jets secondary that would be pass interference calls most nights. Particularly on Cromartie - who did a nice job mugging Jones all night. In turn, they made so very dubious IMO offensive pass interference calls on Atlanta that I think get overlooked most games. Outside of that poor holding call on 4th down late, I really think the Jets caught many breaks from the stripes in that game throughout the game.
The Jets had 6 calls against them, including what should have been the game-winner on 4th down at the end. Falcons had 4 called against them. The difference doesn't have to be huge to influence the game. I don't think a favorite at home is ever going to get jobbed by the refs but it happens to underdogs on the road all the time. Every now and then you have a team in the doghouse like the Raiders in the 80's and 90's and they have to win through the calls but mostly that doesn't happen.
No one is talking about blowouts, I did not expect the Jets to hold them to 3 points, but the Jets defense which Rex is in charge of, blew a good lead, they did not make a stop to win the game. He is not a good HC as much as you want to believe he is, he is not, and nothing you say will ever change my opinion, because i have seen enough of him to realize he is a good DC. If he were as good as some here think he is he would have been hired by the Ravens, instead he was passed over for an unknown, who has proven to be a much better HC than Rex
Rex has done a better job here than harbaugh w/ loaded teams in Baltimore. Baltimore hired a good HC too, that has nothing to do w/ whether rex is a good HC or not.
I think the hold on 4th and 3 was really questionable. DeMario Davis wasn't holding anybody and I didn't see illegal contact on Gonzalez either although Harris definitely was on him inside 5 yards.
Could also be that we have the least amount of 8 point leads going back that far. Which would make it a lot less impressive.
The proof is in the pudding Junc. I'm not Anti Rex, however I'm not going to cry if the Jets fire him either, I believe Idzik has a plan to bring in an offensive minded coach similar to Payton, or Harbaugh in San Fran....JMO
