Fresh off Monday night’s thrilling, 30-28 road victory over the Falcons, Johnson told The Post at the end of the NFL’s annual fall meetings that Ryan has done “a fantastic job” getting a 3-2 record so far out of a team with a rookie quarterback in Geno Smith and that many expected to do nothing in 2013. “He’s getting the most out of the team and his coaches,” Johnson said in an exclusive interview. “He had the team very well prepared [Monday] night, he had a good gameplan with a rookie quarterback, and he’s getting the wins.” Ryan is in the penultimate year of his contract with a new boss in first-year general manager John Idzik, a combination that is usually the kiss of death for a coach’s job security. But though Johnson refused comment when asked if Ryan would be his coach in 2014, the Gang Green boss — still admittedly riding the emotional high of Monday night’s last-second victory — made Ryan come off as anything but a lame duck. “It’s been an excellent effort [from Ryan] so far,” Johnson said. Even so, Johnson sounded like he is taking a wait-and-see approach in terms of a contract extension for Ryan. Coaches rarely choose to enter the last year of their contract without demanding an extension because the uncertainty can lessen the respect from the locker room and make it difficult to hire coaches or lure free agents. Ryan has said little about his contract situation, in large part because he has little leverage after missing the playoffs the past two years. Johnson, meanwhile, told The Post his policy is to make contract talk off-limits — at least publicly — while games are being played. “We don’t make any statements like that during the season,” Johnson said. “I’m looking at practice tomorrow. That’s as far as I go.” Interestingly, Johnson was muted when asked by The Post to assess Idzik’s performance, even though the new GM appears to have hit a home run so far with Smith and first-round pick Sheldon Richardson. “He’s doing a good job, but it’s week-to-week,” Johnson said of Idzik. “We’re focused on the Steelers [on Sunday at MetLife Stadium].” The setting for Johnson’s comments yesterday was particularly ironic, because he made them while normally talkative Giants co-owner John Mara walked past after refusing comment to a Post reporter about Big Blue’s shocking 0-5 start. Asked if he had a moment to speak, Mara said: “No.”
He doesn't have to do anything yet. Rex is under contract until 2014 so why not wait and see how the season plays out.
Interesting that it's not up to Idzik. If Johnson had any class at all he would have said it's the GM's call to extend players and coaches.
Isn't this ancient history? This is what Johnson said 6 weeks or more ago and it hasn't changed nor will it while the season is on.
There is nothing wrong in Woody waiting how this year will play out. I also agree with Biggs not defering the question to Idzik. With these type of answers, he is undermining Idzik.
Its the right move...Treat everything one game at a time. Last thing we need is another Mark Sanchez contract for anyone. Also, see 2008 season. Mangini led his team to 7-2....Things were rosy, then they all took a dump on themselves and we got Rex Ryan the next year
I don't know how true this is though. Most of the time it is the head coaches call on coaches below him unless he is on the hot seat. Some franchises the owner hires the head coach and some of those situations are historically successful. Pat Bowlen in Denver, the Rooneys in Pittsburgh, Bob Kraft in New England, there have been some very successful owners who managed the business of hiring their head coaches.
RR is highly regarded for his defensive abilities and if the jets do not re-up him he will get job offers within 24 hours, i am sure. as we have seen the best spot for him is a team that has an established offensive system - that is looking for an upgrade at D to round out their team. whether thats from the head coaches perch or a D coordinator is almost mute.
BB is the GM and Head Coach of NE. Fox was hired by Elway who is the head of Football operations. The Rooney's run the Steelers no doubt about it although Colbert was the guy who pushed for the Tomlin hire.
BB was hired directly by Bob Kraft in 2000, he was not hired to be head coach and GM. Scott Pioli split GM duties with him for 8 seasons. There was no GM making that hire. Fox was hired by Elway but Shanahan was hired by Pat Bowlen. There are others obviously. It's not like the practice is always sound because you have people like Dan Snyder and Jerry Jones making mistakes alongside the guys who really know what they are doing but it's not like an NFL owner hiring the head coach is a 3 headed bigfoot or anything. It happens fairly often.
John Fox was in dever before Elway was in charge if im not mistaken , since who drafted Tim tebow was Josh Macdaniels wich is now in New Egland.
Everyone assumes that Rex is desperate to sign a long term deal with the Jets. What if Rex gets fed up with waiting, declares that he's not going to talk about his contract until after the season, finishes his contract, and signs a long term deal somewhere else? You want Marty Mohrningweg as your next head coach? I, for one, would be pissed at Woody and Idzik for dragging their heals and not giving Rex and extension. The man has earned it.
McDaniel was approached by Bowlen and then the process was handed off to Elway to complete. Then Fox was hired by Elway when McDaniel flamed out. Bowlen has some aging issues these days and he has handed off control of the operations of the team to Elway. He was a very active owner during the 90's and early 00's.
Think how you'd feel if the Jets gave Rex the long-term extension and then collapsed at the end of the year again to miss the playoffs.
