100%. Folks were dumping on Rex's challenges have to realize everyone screws them up periodically. Look at Coughlin this past week. In the grand scheme of things, being a challenge guru falls way behind being a defensive genius and a leader of men that players will run through walls for. No coach is perfect, I'll take Rex with his warts because the great stuff he does far outweighs the bad. _
Rex, looks good because he finally found an OC who is competent enough to run the offense, Rex still puts his team in bad position on defense when he has a compulsion to blitz and leave corners one on one with some of the best receivers in the league. His defense once again could not make a big stop when needed, the falcons picked up every blitz he threw at them and made them pay. The jets have been very inconsistent with him as HC, we don't know what we are going to get from week to week. He is not as great a HC as some on this board think.
One sided negative thinking. If Rex didn't have the compulsion to blitz as often as he did, the defense wouldn't be the beast that it is. Pettine was more conservative than Rex and it hurt the D, rather than helped overall.
Did you not watch the same game against the falcons? You are telling me I'm negative, when did they stop the falcons in the second half when it counted, the offense bailed out the defense in this game, did it not?
We blew the lead in the 4th qtr. period. We won the game but we still lack a "killer instinct". We had a big lead but our defense DID NOT HOLD and if Folk misses the FG, we lose. Call it whatever you please, but those are still shortcomings of the Rex Ryan Era and no amount of blue sky thinking will alter what happened in Atlanta late in the game. This should have been a cakewalk, not a death match.
A win is a win. Did you think the Jets were winning this game coming into the building Monday night? If Matt Ryan went 36-45 for 319 yards, 2 TD's and no picks while controlling the ball for 35 minutes? It's really easy for the Jets to be 1-4 right now instead of 3-2. At least part of that is the team just not giving up when it gets dark late in the game.
The Falcons offense is close to the level of the Broncos. It is elite. It is a top 5 offense. You don't just easily stop an offense that good all game long. The Jets stop at the end of the 2nd quarter was the clutch stop needed to put the team in a position to win. Further, the game is played for 60 minutes. Not until the opponent scores and takes the lead with only a few minutes left drawing cries of misery and hopelessness from the fan base. You are given the full 60 minutes to get the W, and that is exactly what the Jets did. Anything else is fluff.
You know what good teams in the NFL do? They win on the road by a couple of points on late scores all the time. If we can repeat the mistakes we made in Atlanta on a regular basis, we will actually be one of the best teams in the NFL. Getting a lead losing the lead and winning in the end is not the sign of a bad team or a short coming. Lets see where this team is at the end. If the team is collapsing down the stretch Rex is going to go. If the team keeps improving and competes to the end Rex should get extended. Monday night was a great game and a great win on the road. There's nothing bad about it.
Of course.. Not holding a lead is a good thing. Check, got it. Tellya what Brainiac, lets just keep on blowing leads late in games. Sooner or later, the luck runs out. If and when that happens, I'm sure the BlueSky contingent will excuse that away too like they do everything else. Most likely they'll blame the Refs, the Weather, The Earth's magnetic field, planetary alignments, UFO's, Congress....
You know what else good teams do? They close out games. We don't have the personnel yet to keep getting lucky late in games after blowing big leads. We got easy games in December. Lets see the Jets play 60mins of dominant football against the bottom feeders on our schedule who may or may not still be bottom feeders by that time. Blowing leads late and getting lucky just doesn't seem like a recipie for long term success although it is better to be lucky than good for the most part.
Of course a win is a win. Is anyone arguing that point? NO. Again, this team can't turn big leads into small ones and expect to win consistently. This team needs to learn how to close.
Minus the BS penalty on the Falcons' final drive, we end up holding one of the more potent offenses in the NFL to 21 points and winning by six. If you thought we'd never let them get close, you have some seriously unrealistic expectations. The only way we win that game is in a tight one.
I really hope you aren't holding your breath because the way this season is going Rex will be around for at least another 3 years.
Lets take those evil Refs out of the equation for now. We were up 13pts with how much left on the clock in the 4th?
Where exactly was the luck? A questionable PI call that allowed a TD to the opposition? A beautifully executed drive that put us in good FG range in a dome? Eating the clock to the end before kicking it? I don't get it?
Then Rex had better develop a killer instinct in this team so they know how to close out games. I don't care how long Rex is here for. After 44 years, my time frame is different from the kids around here. This team needs to learn how to close out games they should instead of turning them into death matches. We play the softer part of our schedule after the bye week so, lets see if the Jets have that killer instinct or not. If not, they'd better get one from somewhere. Preferably, the HC of the NYJ's.
The luck was Folk not missing that FG. So far this year, he's been automatic. That hasn't always been the case. He misses? We lose. It shouldn't have come to that.
I guess having a good FG kicker on our roster is lucky. I guess that's a good point. I think NE hasn't won a SB since they dumped Adam.
Rex doesn't draft the players and the killer instinct you speak of comes from them and not the coaches standing on the sidelines. You can't coach guts.
