I haven't been around too much lately wanted to add an early mock draft for the Jets. Heavy on play makers in the the early part of the draft. This draft is under the assumption Geno plays well and we don't go QB. If Geno does struggle and doesn't progress the rest of the season, my mock down the road will reflect a change. 1) MIKE EVANS, WR, TEXAS A&M.....the best WR in the nation and he will be eligible in 2014. Very physical player with good size and hands. If Evans continues to make big plays he will be a solid top 10 pick. The Jets #1 receiver from day 1. We know Tone won't be resigned. 2) ERIC EBRON, TE, NORTH CAROLINA....solid receiver with good hands and willing to block. An emerging TE that could slip into Rd 1, but it always seems TE fall in Rd 1. A steal in early Rd 2. 3A) (from TB) KHALIL MACK, OLB, BUFFALO....If you have never heard of KMack you need to check him out. A good size, 6'3", 255 LB player that is making plays all over the field. If Mack went to a big school he would be a top 15 player, stock should rise and could be a late Rd 1 Mid Rd 2 player. 3B) MARION GRICE, RB, ARIZONA STATE....not a great year for RBs, but Grice has shown early this year he can be a dominant player. Another player that is on the rise and should have a solid season. Looked good against Wisconsin, I was impressed with his quick burst and good vision. Good hands and should fit Marty's system. 4) TRE BOSTON, CB, NORTH CAROLINA....versatile player, that plays mostly corner and some safety, very aggressive player that would fit well in a man system. 5) DRI ARCHER, WR/RB/KR, KENT STATE....hopefully our scouts remember Archer from scouting Brian Winters. An all-purpose offensive threat. He's a smurf, but one of the most electric players in College Football. Needs to stay healthy. 6) JUWAUN JAMES, OT, TENNESSEE.....Depth at OT. 7) TYLER LAWSON, C, UTAH STATE....solid back-up for Mangold. Seems like Idzik likes drafting OL.
Khalil Mack won't be there in Round 3. Right now he's at worst late round 1 after what he did to OSU. If he was there in the 3rd I'd cream myself
I still have a few reservations about Evans and think top 10-15 might be a little high for him I'm all in on the Ebron and Mack picks 2 of my favorite players this season. I don't think Archer will make it to the 5th he will be long gone.
I agree with this. I think at this point Sammy Watkins is ahead of Evans, and arguably Lee as well. Watkins is more of a playmaker, while Evans fits into that traditional massive #1 WR like a Vincent Jackson. I've definitely been impressed with him so far, but Im choosing Watkins over him. Its actually nice to see a large man handle his body well and actually looked coordinated and athletic (cough cough, unlike stephen hill). I like the Ebron pick and would love Mack there, but I think he's a 1st round pick right now, and will only rise. Dri Archer is one JohnnyThaJets favorites (btw, where has he been?). He's definitely a dynamic player that this team could use. Btw- anybody see Ebron's catch today? Crazy.
I want a WR that runs excellent routes. Lee or Evans would be my choices at this juncture. Watkins is a threat with the football but to have a physical WR that can run intermediate routes and be a deep threat? Sign me up. We can get the all purpose weapon in Thomas (kid from Oregon) later in the draft.
I wouldn't look too much onto it. Wisconsin has the system to chime out very good rb play no matter who the rb is. Yes he looks great, and makes losing ball easier, but even as a WI man, idk about that.
I like Mike Evans but I don't see him as a top 15 pick at this stage. He runs the intermediate routes the Jets need help at but I don't see electric movement skills or the ability to cut like Lee,Watkins or even Coleman. I think the Vincent Jackson comparison is a good one as a prospect and his long term projection..but lets remember that it took Jackson 3-4 years to become a complete wide receiver. That I think will be true w/ Evans. He'll need time to refine his route running & develop his game.Let's also remember that Jackson was a late 2nd round pick.Granted Jackson was a small school guy...which Evans is not but he will need to run a good 40 & show movement skills in workouts to surpass that.
Mack wont be there in the 3rd not even 2nd round Evans is intriguing, dude is huge 6'5 which great hands and would create a nice duo with Stephen Hill, if he ever gets his hands right, on the outside with Kerley manning the slot I like Ebron but I think he goes before we pick again Lyerla should be there if not take Arthur Lynch As for backs, Melvin Gordon is my #1 back and could be there in round 2
I think Jets will get 3 comp picks...for Landry/Keller/Greene. I'll say a 4th, 5th and 6th. We gotta get some really good players. One guy I want badly is RB/WR Chris Archer of Kent St who you have in your mock WW85. Would be our return specialist right from the go, would be such a weapon for Geno to utilize. I think he can be had with one of our 3rd round picks. Really wanted him to declare last year but man he's exactly what we need. Pure home run hitter. Not an every down back but he fits the Darren Sproles/Leon Washington role to a crisp but with more upside than Washington and arguably Sproles. I would be absolutely shocked if he fell to Day 3. The guy might shoot up to a 2nd round pick if he kicks ass at the combines and everything. He's that much of an X-Factor. I love Mack but I think he can be a late first round pick, maybe top 20. He kicked ass vs the Buckeyes which will be a huge chip in his coop come draft day.
mike evans has all the potential in the world, but i'd rather have a marqise lee or sammy watkins just because they seemed like more polished football players and those boys have great hands and can get YAC. if we had the luxury of getting mike evans it would be a good idea, but we just don't. this team can't make on potential at WR, not yet
As of right now, I think Mike Evans is an early 2nd round pick. I would not be opposed to something like Sammy Watkins or Lee in the 1st and then Evans in the 2nd. They would compliment eachother very well and both with provide great weapons for a young Qb. That being said im not a huge believer in Hill, but that could change. For RB's, I think Lache Seastrunk is the clear cut #1 RB. He's build in that MJD/Doug Martin mold, and displays very good explosiveness and lateral movement.
First, I love how people say.."there's no way he's drafted in that round". I don't talk absolutes, especially this early, I have been around too long to see players rise and fall and get drafted where they weren't predicted by the "Herd". Usually when I comment on another mock I talk about the position drafted, and how that player would fit into the Jet's system. Also, nobody commented on the positions I selected, that's more important than the actual players, since it's very early. I rate WR, OLB & TE as our top 3 needs. I think most of you guys are underestimating Mike Evans. He is exactly the type of receiver that succeeds in the NFL, great hands, very physical, not a burner, but elusive after the catch. As of week 4, Evans is one of the top receivers in College Football and I expect him to declare as long as he isn't injured. As far as Watkins, he has the highest ceiling, and his physical abilities are incredible. I just have a some concerns of his past off field stuff and will he be mature enough to succeed in the NFL. Lee is another great player, but has been under used at USC, it will hurt his stock if his #s don't improve. Right now I would rate #1 Watkins & #2 Evans. As far as Mack, let's see if he continues his dominate play, you have to remember he's from a smaller school and LBs usually fall in rd 1. Like I said, right now , I give him a low 2nd, High 3rd, but as the season goes on, he should be a late rd 1 pick. People aren't talking too much about Ebron, he would be a perfect addition to the Jets, and I can see his stock rise also, since he's one of the only legitimate weapons on the Tar Heels. I love Archer, he's a great player, but has had a few injuries to keep him off the field. He needs to get back to last year's form, or his stock will take a hit. No comments on Marion Grice and the need for another RB??, I love that kid's game.
Remember the Idzik "Competition" requirement. I'd be really surprised if the Jets took a WR in round 1 and didn't follow up with another one by round 3 or 4 at the outside. Similarly, I think an early OLB who wasn't Jadaveon Clowney might signal another OLB pick by round 4. In 2013 we got CB - adequate already, DL - already strong, QB - must pick, OL, OL, OL in rounds 3, 5 and 6. I'd expect to see chunk drafts like that in 2014 and maybe 2015 as well until the Jets see themselves as only missing a few pieces. Use the draft to guarantee some good players. Best way to do that is to go flush on several areas and allow the competition to bring out the best. One nice side effect is that those areas also have some depth after the competition is decided. I'd be ok with a draft next year that was 2 OLB's, 2 WR's, 2 TE's, 2 Safeties, etc.
I do agree with pretty much all of this. I do think WR is by far our #1 need, and as long as a good prospect is there (Watkins, Lee, Evans) I dont see how we can pass on them. I would say TE, OLB and RB are next in line. I would love ASJ or Lyerla on this team. I dont think I would spend a top 10 pick on either, but I would definitely think about trading back into the 1st for ASJ. I love Ebron's physical traits, but I think he hands are a little too inconsistent for me to love him right now. Ive only seen a handful of his games, but he has dropped a good amount of passes that I would like to see a TE make. In terms of WR's fitting into the system and personnel that we already have, I think much of that depends on Stephen Hill. If Stephen Hill can pan out into a solid #2, then the need for a massive body might not be so urgent. Marty loved fast, electric players that could make plays after the catch with the Eagles (Desean Jackson and Maclin). I think Lee and Watkins fit into his WCO system a little better than Evans. Either way, I would be very happy with one of the 3. I think OLB and RB are needs, but they depend on what we have. Coples should be our future at OLB if they keep him there, and if we dont go OLB in this draft, I think Barnes could hold the fort there. For RB, Ivory is still an unknown and Powell is just a guy. I've been saying in this draft forum for years that we need to draft an RB and it hasnt happened yet. The last need could actually be an offensive weapon- someone like Archer or Thomas would just add a whole dynamic element to this offense.
That's the idea I would sign off in a heartbeat. Jets sorely lack playmakers all across the board, so if they can come away with 2x OLBs, 2x S, 2x TEs AND 2x WRs to start competition, I wouldn't hate that at all.
WW85 is right players fall up and down all the time, Matt Barkley first overall on Kipers board heading into last season, chosen in the 4th Round 98th overall. Mack is playing well but he's going to have to keep it up to garner a first round selection. Especially at OLB a position famous for having risers/fallers every single year. As far as the draft Dri Archer and Tre Boston are 2 players i like and actually have in my mock I'm about to release. I personally like Lee more the Evans and Watkins, but he obviously has a higher ceiling because of his size. Good Mock
I dont really see how drafting a RB makes any sense, definitely not that early. And two of them sheesh. Goodson and Ivory are under contract for 3 years Bilal is still under the the last year of his (rookie) contract next year as well. I understand nobody is Adrian Peterson, but thats a reasonable trio of backs. If were talking about grabbing a special teams standout who can excel in the pass game in the 5th/6th/7th round thats one thing, but definitely not a 3rd. I love seeing WR and TE addressed with the first two picks. But we also really need another guard. Whether hes someone that will start next year, or be depth/groomed behind Colon this team absolutely needs a guard. I think theres a great chance Vlad moves on and goes elsewhere. I think position wise we really need 1-2 wr, 1-2 te, 1og, 1 olb. With at least 3 wr/te and im not really sure on safety. On one hand our safetys arent the greatest, but we have 3 young promising guys + Landry under contract for another year. Heck i could see us adding a QB too, either to take Genos job or back him up.
Just because ivory and Goodson are under contract doesn't mean they can't be cut or traded. Personally I have been disappointed with both of them(just goodsons off the field issues not play). I think billal is good and should be kept especially at his cheap price. I'd really like to add a true no 1 back this year. Definitely would be happy with seastrunk, Melvin Gordon or Kadeem carey. Although I would defitinely prefer carey if I had to choose.
