I had originally thought 5-7 wins. Now I'm thinking 7-9, maybe even 10, wins. I'm not sure there's even one area that we're playing worse than I expected. Okay, maybe special teams but beyond that, I'm very pleased. It's funny, when we had Revis, we used to talk about what WR he was going to limit to minimal yardage, but now it's our run defense that I'm starting to think those thoughts about. Doug Martin? C.J. Spiller? Bring 'em on!
We lost to the Steelers 27-10. Hardly close at all. That being said, my expectations haven't changed at all. We're a 7-10 win team. We're on pace for that right now. Beat Tennesee, and take 2 out of the next 5 and we are in good shape. Hell, even 1 of the next 5 will set us up nicely
If the game comes down to being on the shoulders of Matt Ryan then it's really on the shoulders of Geno Smith because no QB is going to beat Rex's D without a running game to help out if the Jets can score 3 TD's.
Its amazing how the perception of this team has changed so quickly. A month ago when people thought about the Jets they thought about how Revis is gone, how the Jets are one of the bottom dweller teams, they have no talent, they wont have a good offense, the defense is worse without Revis, etc. Now people are saying the Jets have potential and are actually building something. No one was interested in the Jets a month ago but suddenly the interest level is rising across the league, fans across the league are hearing the rumblings of our D-line and how good it is. The Jets are reminding me of Seattle last season tbh. This team should only get better and better.
There were a LOT of question marks surrounding this team when the season began. Then again, for anyone paying attention, the players were always there to make this a very strong D, especially with Rex more involved than last season. The quality of the QB play and the offense was a huge mystery before the season began.
Despite the penalties yesterday, I saw some very encouraging things that bode well for the rest of the season. Santonio the playmaker is back. Our front 7 is getting better each week. (8 sacks!) After the pathetic Kyle Wilson penalty drive, rather than play conservative to try for a 3 point late lead, we go for the long ball and connect. Stephen Hill made a big play. Bilal Powell goes for 100+ Geno will continue to throw some picks, but this offense can strike long, and that changes A LOT for opposing defenses.
Interesting fact per Jets twit. The Jets are tied for 3rd in the NFL in offensive plays per game. Leaders: Patriots (75), Ravens (71.7), Texans & Jets (71)
Pretty interesting fact, considering that the Jets aren't running a no-huddle offense. I'd expect the Eagles to be running more plays per game than the Jets, but I guess the Jets' defense helps get the offense more drives per game.
It just occurred to me that WVU was in the top 10 in offensive plays run in 2011 and 2012. That means that Geno snapping the ball with 18 seconds on the clock with an 11 point lead was probably situation normal to him. The Jets are going to have to work on that with him. There are reasons to snap the ball fast in a hurry up but I'm not sure the tactical advantage gained is worth it with a 2 score lead in the 3rd quarter.
I am very happy to be wrong about this week. I thought we had some serious issue coming into this contest , but we seemed to rebound and actually execute. I still think we are no where near ready to contend but hoping for good things.
Coming into the season, I thought we'd be a scrappy, competitive 5-8 win team. I still think that. However, the eight win ceiling could be broken through if Geno somehow flips the switch. "D" is clearly playoff caliber and healthy offense has enough depth to keep us in games.
I gave no or offered any predictions on what our W-L record would be. I'm simply taking it 1 game @ a time.........!
We are right where I thought we'd be at this time. Main problem is, some unexpected teams are good this year. Titans are better than previous years. Miami is actually looking good. Falcons look bad. Steelers are garbage. Bengals are really good. Ravens are overrated. Raiders still suck. Cleveland still sucks. Carolina isn't that good. Just based on how good our opponents are, IMO, 8-8 is very doable. 9-7 wouldn't be a reach.
I was thinking 6-10, now maybe 8-8, 9-7 tops. Thankfully, they're quite healthy, that's huge. If they can be 5-4 going into the bye, I'll be overjoyed. But they have to finish strong, that's what they didn't do the last two years.
That was my prediction and I'm sticking to it. It was clear that our defense was going to be solid from the beginning, despite the clueless chorus in the national media. As high as the defense was ranked for the last three years, all impartial observers knew it could have been so much better if not for all the offensive turnovers, short fields, and playing from behind. With a beastly defense you don't need Peyton Manning at qb, you just need a guy who can take care of the ball, gain field position, and score a few points. Without Sanchez dragging the team down the Jets can contend every year with a Rex Ryan D.
Had us down for 7 wins purely on the grounds that the O would be better with Marty calling it. I always thought that we would be better than last year, but equally that it might not really be reflected in the W/L count. I've got us sliding up to 8 wins now, maybe 9. Partly because I've seen that the O will be better, partly because the D is looking even better than I had hoped and partly because some of the teams (Atlanta, Steelers) on our schedule look more vulnerable than I had anticipated.
Had them at about 7-8 wins going into the season and I'm sticking with that. I felt 3 of the first 4 games were winnable, Tennessee is looking tougher then I imagined though. Some of the teams I thought would be good are looking suspect right now and teams I felt would suck are surprising. If after week 11 there about 6-4 then my expectations will obviously change but I liked some of the things I saw from geno on Sunday. Hopefully they can keep developing and playing hard. They were 2-1 last season before the wheels fell off hard but this 2-1 seems like a much more positive 2-1 then last years record at this point.
Who'd a thunk it? At the conclusion of week 3, the Jets defense AND offense are ranked in the top 10.
