Should a rookie start or learn from the bench?

This may be best answered by Lord Nelson, famous British Admiral:

"I learned more in 4 hours sailing the harbor than 4 years in Naval Academy"

The Jets are not getting Teddy Bridgewater. Trading a pack of picks to draft him so that he can come in and throw passes at Clyde Gates and company isn't going to happen.

The Browns are one of the teams that has an excellent shot at Bridgewater. Getting an extra 1st round pick certainly helps them in that quest if that's what they want to do. The Colts were a bad bet though. That's an 8-8 team, maybe better.

Yea because game planning around a raw rookie QB like Sanchez was an awful strategy.

Retaining information wasn't Sanchez's problem especially during practice.

The color coded wristband was the dumbest idea ever.

if the colts go 8-8 and get the 16ish pick plus there top 3 probable pick thats a good start for bargaining for pick 1. or they come out of april with there qb thats not teddy(manziel? it would bring excitement to a down trodden franchise) and a wr to go with him. thats a nice way to start rebuilding

didn't work great in the long run,did it?

I'm not arguing that its not stupid. I'm saying that its an indictment on Sanchez that the coaching staff felt they needed to give Sanchez color coded wristbands.

    Because Sanchez didn't progress much.

Giving a rookie a taste and then benching him may not be about moving on. There have been plenty of rookie QB's who got in and were benched who ended up doing very well in the NFL. QB's need to be developed. Benching Geno doesn't have to be about moving on. You make an assumption that benching Geno is about moving on. That could be a premise that has no factual basis.

Bradshaw and Staubach both got starts and were benched multiple times.

I agree with most of this.

There's context though that would make it a bad choice for the Jets early in Geno Smith's career. The Jets do not have a veteran QB to come in and take a half here and there when Geno is having a particularly bad day and making more than the usual number of rookie mistakes.

What they have instead is a young guy who has very little chance of becoming a good NFL QB but who has captured the imagination of a fair number of fans due to his preseason prowess.

All Matt Simms has to do to create a QB controversy is not look bad at this point. Complete 60% of his passes for 6 yards a pop and not throw too many picks and we're in the split locker room situation, if not in reality at least in the fervid imaginations of beat writers best left unnamed.

This despite the fact that it ain't going to get better than that and the Jets will be chasing their tails for a season or more if they try to develop Simms while Geno sits and the information on him doesn't advance much.

Matt Robinson? Same thing only Robinson was actually a bit better of a prospect than Simms is right now.

If the Todd/Robinson controversy never got off the ground the odds are excellent that the Jets move on from Todd earlier than they did. On the chance that Todd matured and really took hold of the job, well the Jets would have been better off there as well.

Given who they have on the roster the Jets really need to just let Geno play out until the bye. If he's terrible and not progressing at that point, well the Jets will be 2-7 or something like that and then they can figure out whether it is worth it to inject something like the Simms controversy into the mix. Adding that to the equation right now would be like hitting themselves in the forehead repeatedly with a hammer.

That is all well and good if Rex is not on the hot seat via 2009. This year he needs to win and he will not let this team get to 2-7 because of the QB.

FWIW I have been watching NYJ FB since it's inception way back in 1960 & I have seen every NYJ QB they ever put on the field. Up till now GS does not have the quick release of the FB ala JWN nor does he has JWN FB smarts on the field (see MS). Maybe the FB smarts can be coached but usually that is a innate thing. The quick release of the FB for sure is a given talent which passed by GS sorry to say

I wouldn't get too worked up. Dan Marino had the quickest release in football and only won like 6 or 7 SBs.

Curt Warner, on the other hand, was a CFL dumpster diver with tiny hands and a slow release and only won one SB (although he does own the record for the 2nd most passing yards in a SB, and he also owns the record for the most passing yards...yes, he broke his own record which has yet to be matched)

Could be DMs release was not as quick as everybody says. Maybe Warner had the FB smarts to overcome a average release.

You don't have to have a quick release to be successful in the NFL. Anticipation, seeing the WR before he's open - now that's something that allows a QB to succeed in the NFL.

I've seen Geno make some of those throws so far (very inconsistently) - never really saw it from MS though.

maybe he didn't progress well because they tried so hard to hide him.

Geno Smith isn't a can't miss No 1 pick in the draft QB who the Jets drafted to be the franchise QB for the next 10 years. The rookie cap coupled with the fact that the Jets made him their 3rd pick in the draft means that Geno is a low risk rookie who they would love to develop but he doesn't have to be anointed anything.

The Jets have every right to develop him and Simms. It's your opinion that Smith is a better pro-prospect then Simms at this point. That impacts your opinion on not benching Geno. The reality is you have prejudged Simms and Geno based on nothing other then College football.

The Jets Geno and Simms should be able to grow and develop, wash out or become a good pro, playing and sitting. Neither one of them are guaranteed squat. Geno is not Andrew Luck, Payton Manning or anything close to Bradshaw and Staubach coming out of College.

The rookie cap changes everything. The Jets had a good draft before they took a flyer on Geno.

    He's well hidden now...

Two games into the 2013 season, Sanchez hasn't thrown a single interception or fumbled even once.

Those are the kind of fantasy numbers that need no context...

College football is the only thing that matters for 99.732% of all NFL players. Being a good college player doesn't mean you will good in the NFL but being a bad college football player gives you about a 99.732% chance of being bad in the NFL.

Matt Simms had a good month. Mostly against non-NFL players. I'm going to weight the years he had at Tennessee about 1000-1 over the month he had in training camp impersonating Brett Ratliff.

We saw what happened when they let Sanchez throw more in 2011. It was a disaster. He was so bad that they hired Sparano to revert back to the ground and pound strategy of 09 and 10. The coaches knew Sanchez was limited and the play calling reflected that.

If Matt Simms got thrown out there on a regular basis to face these guys, he would fall so hard flat on his face with this offense surrounding him that it wouldn't even be fair to put him in that situation.
