Offensive and Defensive Rankings

I don't see how firing Rex would improve the offense. It's not like we have an offense loaded with playmakers and our HC is misusing them, it's more that we just don't have any great talent in the offensive skill positions (Kerley is good, but that's about it.)

Last year, we had problems at quarterback, wide receiver, and running back. (Dustin Keller was a good TE, although we lost him.) We corrected the problems at running back and now have decent ones with potential to be above-average (Ivory/Goodson/Powell). We're evaluating whether Smith is the solution at QB (someone to build an offense around) and if he is, next year we can address WR and TE on a more long term basis and actually be good on offense, as long as Smith can play at a modest Tannehill level.

If we lose Rex, then defense plummets down to slightly above average (top-14) and we have to start over at QB even if Smith or Simms showed strong potential. Our best bet to be a playoff team in 2014 involves a Rex Ryan defense.

With Rex at the helm and calling the D I see us getting better with each passing game. If we can stay healthy and Coples returns, we could be scary good.

As far a the O goes, a lot will depend on how quickly Geno develops. Even with our current group of receivers and a healthy Kerley and Holmes we can make a run at the division. Now factor in a running game that will certainly improve with the cohesion of the O line and the addition of Goodson. Which in turn will make it easier on Geno and the doom and gloom crowd may have to call it a year.

Yes but whats the point of holding the opponent to a low completion % just to give up a big play or touchdown in 1 play. Our defense has been very good but too many miscommunications in the first 2 weeks. Cromartie needs to step it up hes supposed to be our vet #1 corner and he got manhandled by Jackson in week 1 and gave up some plays against no names in week 2.

I hate to break it to you, but just about every defense gives up at least 1 big 3rd down play per game. If they didn't, no team would ever score. You are holding our defense to unrealistic standards. It's like if we don't pitch a shutout, people get upset. Didn't we allow just 1 opposing TD in each game on D? Cromartie isn't Revis. Jackson is a beast. Our D is ranked #2 overall in yards. It's the least of our problems. at getting annoyed because our D gives up one big play every once in a while, while the offense commits constant TOs and ranks near the bottom of the league in almost every category. The D is just fine.

The best part is that the main staples of the defense are all so young. Wilkerson, Coples, Richardson, Ellis/Harrison, and D. Davis are all playing at a high level despite being in their early 20s. I think Milliner will be great too despite his early struggles.

The only major players on defense that may not have way too much time left are Cromartie and Harris, but they still have a couple years.

Hopefully all of next offseason is focused on the offense. If so we are not far from competing for years.

I never said anything about 3rd downs I said we gave up too many big passing plays PERIOD the first 2 weeks, whether its miscommunications or guys getting beat. Even Rex will be the first to admit it. Our defense has been stellar but I replied to a guy who asked what's the weakest link to our defense and DB's is the weakest link. We have 1 proven CB and a bunch of randoms everywhere else.

Padded stats, Jets got a lot of help from the Pats shitty receivers.

I think team stats are a bit skewed until about week 6 or so until there is more of a sample to examine. The game against the pats probably curved the numbers quite a bit, but not to say the Jets have a good-to-great defense.

Numbers after 2 games don't tell the whole story. For example, the Dolphins 18th total D ranking doesn't reflect the defense having 4 INTs (tied 2nd) and 9 sacks (tied 1st) AND allowing an avg of 15 ppg (tied 3rd).

The Jets D plays opposite to the bend but don't break philosophy.
they are very aggressive, and take a lot of calculated chances.

The positive result is 10 first downs allowed avg, which is crazy good so far. Also 2nd in league in yds allowed. They don't want to give any ground.

The downside is susceptibility to big plays. A missed tackle, miscommunication, or ill timed PI penalty can lead to big plays for the opposing team.
Remember though this is a young inexperienced crew, with about 75% new starters. They'll need a little time together to grow a bit more savvy, and limit the mistakes (although there will always be some when you play that aggressive). The key is to limit it.

I think they've been playing better than could have been expected thus far. And personally i love the aggressive approach. So much more exciting as a fan, and intimidating....especially to young QB's.

Agreed 2 games is not enough a sample size.
Also agreed you cannot look at just one stat and hang your hat on that. Looking at several key stats will broaden the insight.

As a Fin fan, you should be encouraged by those INTs and sacks though, even if only 2 games. Same for Jet fans in terms of how tough yds and first downs have been for opponents.

because you don't need an a head coach that was an offensive coordinator to have a good offense. you need talented offensive players and a good coordinator. Rex Ryan's ability as a head coach isn't what has hurt this team offensively.

I would not be at all upset if Idzik went heavy on Defense in the 2014 draft....OLB, Safety, ISLB in that order (Lawrence Taylor, Troy Palamalu, and Ray Lewis).

Our defense becomes the face of the Jets, we're ranked #1 for a reason for the next 6-7 years, NO ONE wants to play us, and Idzik can then focus on the offense all he wants after that.

Absolutely I love the way Miami is playing ...

Also, I watched the Jet/Pats game and pieces of the Bucs game, anyone underestimating the Jets D will be swiftly punched in the mouth by an aggressive defense.

We already went defense heavy in this draft. The first two rounds need to be dedicated to the offense.

Being the #1 defense in the league means nothing if you don't have an offense that can score 21 points on a good day.

We aren't the 2000 Baltimore Ravens, and we never will be. We need to get play-makers otherwise we will have another bad QB throwing interceptions and WRs dropping passes.

I see no positives to going defense heavy in 2012, not with all of the skill players potentially available at WR / RB and TE.

I've been a believer that Idzik will keep Rex around as well, I just think next year they need to look at playmakers in the early rounds.

The OL should be solid for a while, no need to invest a high draft pick into it this coming year. Defense; only if a stud OLB is the BPA at their draft slot. Otherwise, they should be looking at the BPA between WR, TE, and RB in the first 3 rounds of the draft next year.

Obviously, these things can change as the season progresses, but as of now thats my thinking

    ---------------

Also, assuming the cap stays about the same next year, the Jets are looking at having about $25 million in available cap space going into the 2014 off-season with 38 players under contract, and likely more coming free after some cuts/re-structures. That will leave them with the option to invest in some solid FAs (I don't see Idzik spending on a big-time FA this year) to solidify/add depth to the defense and add some complementary pieces to the offense

Some potential (likely) cuts or restructures
    • Mark Sanchez, QB (cut - cap savings of $8.3M)
    • Santonio Holmes, WR (cut - cap savings of $8.25M)
    • David Harris, LB (restructure - cap hit of $7M)

Our passing stats say otherwise, and like I said, all defenses give up big plays. Oh sorry, they weren't all on 3rd down. It was still very minuscule when you look at how many 3 and outs and punts we forced in those games. DB is not the weakest link it's one of the deepest units on the team next to the D line. Cromartie's a pro bowler.

I think I will vomit if that happens, we've drafted defense first the past 3 years. Next draft should be all offense. We can't have it that lopsided and our defense is already top 5. The defense already is the face of the Jets and has a very bright looking future. You can't have elite players at all the positions and expect to field an offense capable of consistently putting up points.

Pro bowlers are chosen by fans so I can care less about them. We gave up a wide open touchdown on a blown assignment to Aaron Dobson that lost us the game considering we lost by 3. We almost lost to the Bucs on a blown coverage to Vincent Jackson but our speedster LB chased him down. Are you really going to tell me that Safety/CB's are the deepest units of our team? Milliner is a rookie, Walls is a second year player with barely any playing experience, Kyle Wilson is decent, Trufant is a special teams player but is like 5'7. Don't even get me started on the safety position. I love our defense but if we have a weak link this season its going to be the passing defense.

Are you saying Cromartie wasn't qualified for the pro bowl? Dude, in 2012, out of every CB in the league with 20% or more of the targets, Cro was ranked #2 with 61% incomplete pass rate. Only Flowers had a higher rating (62%) and Sherman was tied at 61%. But you know, its the fans so it must be wrong!

The defense didn't lose us that game because of one drive. Offenses are expected to put up more than 10 points per game. Anybody who blames that loss on defense has no clue whatsoever about the game of football. It's like Junc arguing that the defense blew the game when the offense turned the ball over 5 times vs the Titans. They beat us 13-10!!!! I guess 3 turnovers in the 4th quarter, including one in FG range had nothing to do with that, right? Gates dropping that TD pass didn't cost us 4 points or anything, right? These arguments are laughable. I'd argue that LB is one area we need work in, much moreso than DBs. Our safeties might be a little bit weak, but it doesn't make up for the pro bowler Cromartie and a decent Kyle Wilson. Milliner will come around. Even the best Ds in the league are not perfect. Every team allows scores each game and most of them allow multiple TDs each game, which our D has yet to do.

It's really hilarious. The defense allows one TD and the loss is suddenly completely their fault! It's nothing more than nitpicking. You can expect any defense to give up at least 10 points a game. You want perfect, but it's unrealistic. I want an offense that can actually score points. We don't need an all pro defense, just a semi serviceable offense.

You really need to read and comprehend, I didn't say he doesn't qualify for the pro bowl I said I don't care for pro bowls, all pro selections matter much more to me. The person I was replying to asked what the weak link on our defense would be if we had one and I replied. I didn't blame the defense but of course you don't read you just assume. Your throwing around Cromarties last year stats, this is a new season and so far he's been playing like shit. You think Rex is happy about that blown assignment for the touchdown to Dobson because we only gave up 13 points, its still unacceptable. So are turnovers in the 4th quarters and dropped passes from the O.
