I mean, we brought in Hill to be this deep, vertical, fly route passer who can stretch the field and make spectacular catches due to his size. He was freaky fast for his size. How does he not get any separation!?
Actually he was a 2nd round pick and the Jets also gave up a 5th and a 7th round pick to move up 4 spots in the 2nd round to take him.
He had opportunities last night -- Smith under-threw him and another play he was wide open up the middle for a TD and Smith didn't pull the trigger. The guy had 4 catches for 86 yards. He is looking better catching the ball but I want to see them use him to stretch the field. Question is can Smith throw a deep ball? He had Powell open on the sideline early on and he had two steps on a linebacker - Smith airmailed it to the bench.
Was just going to post the same thing. As much as I hate Holmes' character, he is at least a 'professional receiver': 1) Locate the ball 2) Secure the ball 3) Get your feet down 4) Finish the catch I will say though that Holmes does use his body too much. There only seem to be a few NFL guys that consistently use their hands to catch, the most glaring example being Larry Fitz, who is probably the best WR in the league when it comes to catching balls. How much blame should we be putting on our WR coaches? What are they doing in practice where they keep letting balls bouce off of them in games? I just don't get it. Hill should have caught the out route on 3rd that I think went right through his hands. He also should have reached out and grabbed the long ball that Geno threw from his own EZ on 3rd. He was TWO FEET above the CBs, and decided to let the ball come to his chest where the DBs hands were. REACH OUT AND FREAKING GRAB THE BALL WITH YOUR GIANT WAFFLE IRON SIZED HANDS!!!! Have any of you played around with those gloves they wear? They had some at Marshalls/TJ Maxx and I put them on for fun. That rubber they have on the palms/fingers is amazing - I think I could stick a finger out as a ball whizzed by and it would stick to it. You could see on Edleman's last (I think) reception - he reached his hands all the way out, and the ball, which was thrown pretty hard, just stuck there for him to pull in. I don't know why any WR would try to rely on hard plastic of shoulder pads to secure a ball when you have those gloves. So freaking frusterating.
he was horrible for us last night. 1) ridiculous fumble completely changed the game 2) not getting that first down head to head with a DB he has weight on. How on earth he didn't get that first is beyond me. 3) that drop Just a horrible game for Stephen last night. He needs to do better. If you remove 1 of those 3 terrible plays we may very well have won the game.
I wouldn't say he's a bust. But he has got to better then what we saw last night. Honestly, after that fumble I wanted Rex to bench him for a drive. Which pisses me off. He benched Milliner but not Hill. Why because Milliner plays D? Hill's fumble was bench worthy for a drive no question about it, for the simple fact that he did not secure the ball. He showed zero fundamental ability on the play, he hung the ball out there and let his arm fly around with his body. A bad individual play.
If you look at the replay as Hill is going down he's more concerned about putting his second arm on the ground to break his fall than he is about holding onto the ball. Two hands on the ball son!
Hill has game changing tendencies, for loosing. Bad hands, fumble tendencies, and bad route running. You can fix 2 of these, but the hands thing will be with him for his short career. If we stick with him beyond this year it will cost us down the road. We need to spend picks and money on skilled offensive players, not just more toys for Wrecks to pad his defense with.
Honestly, besides the drop towards the end and obviously the fumble in the beginning Hill played very well. I know those things can't be overlooked though. If Hill catches that ball at the end he probably finishes last night with 5 catches for 100+ yards. He needs to cut down on his mistakes but I really do think he is developing into a good receiver.
You guys are hilarious. I mean really? HILL WAS NOT THE ONLY ONE DROPPING BALLS. He had no problem catching balls last week. When it rains like it did in NE, you should be running the ball most of the time anyways. And don't bring up how edleman was having no problem catching balls. How can you not catch those short passes? Umm yes, but he didn't cost us the game this year. Or did you even watch it?
Hill sucks. I would never trust him in a big spot. I don't understand this notion that "except for the big fumble and drop which cost us the game, I thought he was great..." Clyde Gates belongs in the CFL. Maybe. This scrub should never have been signed by Tony Soprano [sic] in the first place. The guy never made any plays in Miami or last year with the Jets. Why did management think he was suddenly gonna start making plays now?? And you cut Braylon for him? I don't care if Braylon runs a 4.8 40 right now. At least he can catch the damn ball.
Hill caught everything last week and everything but the one pass last night. His hands have been the issue from day one and clearly he's developing. Now he got in his first bang bang play where the defender got a limb in on the ball and he found out you can lose it that way too. I don't expect that to be the last time he does something that stupid in his career but he should learn from that and work on securing the ball after he has figured out how to actually catch the thing. He's clearly becoming a bigger factor in games, now he has to start learning how to kill the other team from his actions rather than killing our team. Overall optimistic with how he has played so far.
Athletic freak, bad football player. He was a project coming out of college and the last place he was going to develope is with our trainwreck offense.
