http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/category/rumor-mill/ Mark Sanchez is not the Jets’ starting quarterback, but he believes he proved in training camp and the preseason that he is the Jets’ best quarterback when healthy. Sanchez told Rich Eisen of NFL Network that suffering a shoulder injury in the preseason is particularly tough for him because he is sure he — not Geno Smith — would have been named the starting quarterback if he were healthy. “I won the competition. There’s no doubt,” Sanchez said. Despite reports that Sanchez will likely need season-ending shoulder surgery, Sanchez told Eisen that doctors are “pleasantly surprised” by his progress, and the plan is for Sanchez to rehab his injury and get back on the field this year. If Smith plays well, however, Sanchez may not get back on the field no matter how well rehab of his shoulder goes. Even if Sanchez won the competition over the summer, that doesn’t mean the job will be his when he’s healthy enough to play.
I think that he did win. But now the team is (and should be) moving forward with Geno unless he starts to struggle mightily.
He definitely did play better, but it's Geno's team now. I wish Mark the best of luck wherever he ends up.
He did win, but Geno will have to tank now in order for Sanchez to take the job back from him when he's healthy again.
If Geno looks like straight garbage this season, I could see us bringing back Sanchez at a reduced contract next season in order to mentor our 1st round pick QB. That said, Geno looked solid in his debut, and I don't expect him to fail that hard.
He may have had better preseason stats but even then, it's not by much. The eyes tell a much different story. He made the same dumb mistakes during preseason that he's been making for 4 years. Pick 6 on a short route, fumble on a snap. Sanchez should've run away with the starting gig in this competition early on. He had 4 years of NFL starts under his belt and it was a close competition until the very end. Sanchez may be good person, but he should be ashamed of making such dumb comment.
No one separated themselves. Sanchez was the same old player: inconsistent. His preseason consisted of 2 very good drives, and then the usual pathetic offense/turnover.
He should not have said that, regardless of what it was also the only reason he "won" is because Geno threw 3 picks vs the Giants lets be real Mark was no better, threw 2 picks, 1 was saved and he lost a fumble so did you win Mark not really more like Geno just made all his mistakes in 1 game while yours were over 3 games
Agree and I'm surprised he made these comments. He won the competition, but geno played well enough week1, healthy or not sanchez wasn't going to play anymore. He handled all the bs really well, first time he had some sort of a breakdown. They should ir him right now, let him get his surgery and let him go next year. This idea he doesn't want surgery and will rehab? Jets aren't giving him the job back, no matter what IMO. No idea what he's thinking This is sure to get weird now.
Another classy statement by Sanchez. Geno won the competition. All Geno had to do to win the competition was to stay close to Sanchez as Geno will improve with time and Sanchez likely will not. Sanchez failed to pull away therefore Geno wins the competition. Geno clearly outplayed Sanchez every week of camp except the week where he was injured. but even with that Brutal week Geno's camp numbers were slightly better than Sanchez's. Both played poorly in pre-season. But again Sanchez failed to separate himself from a rookie so the rookie wins. Maybe after all its a better thing that Sanchez did get injured if this is how is going to act. Recall prior to camp he said 4-5 times in the media that he would definitely win the starting job if it was a fair competition. Implying the competition was rigged. I would imagine that is what he would said after he lost the job. Remember how Sanchez tried to intimidate Geno with the camp west and his use of the media. Geno did not fall for it like Tebow did. Sanchez has never been a class act. Has anyone ever seen him take responsibility for his bad play. Its never his fault. We would to block better, tackle better, catch the ball better. It is always someones fault and not his. At best he marginalizes hos responsibility simply saying I need to play better along with throwing others under the bus. Watch a real leader QB after a loss. I suspect Tom Brady is a fake but watch him after a loss and he is humble and it is always his fault. Real QB leaders always take the blame even if its not their fault. Hopefully this time with Geno we will get a true leader who takes responsibility.
He did win but there's no need for him to discuss this now, bad move by Mark who has always been a team first guy- until now.
I'm not surprised he said it at all. He knows he's done here if he's going to miss significant time. He wants the opportunity to catch on somewhere else this season. He wants to be cut.
key things Sanchez's turnover vs Detroit- so what, its only a pick(I'm paraphrasing) Geno's INT and fumbe vs Tampa Bay- those were on me, I have to take better care of the ball and limit turnovers
