Dr. James Andrews confirmed Wednesday that Mark Sanchez has a labral tear in his right shoulder, and the New York Jets quarterback is "likely to have surgery" that would end his 2013 season, according to team and league sources, as well as a source close to Sanchez. Sanchez still was trying to make a final decision on whether to have the surgery now to repair the tear and instability in the shoulder following his injury in the team's third preseason game, the sources said. Mark Sanchez is "likely to have" shoulder surgery, an injury that would end his season, according to sources. Sanchez could opt to rehab the shoulder in an effort to play at some point this season, sources said, but still likely would need surgery at the end of the year. Sanchez, replying to a text message, told ESPN late Wednesday night: "If I needed surgery right now, I never would have left Andrews' office. I would've stayed and got the surgery." Asked if he wanted to deny that he was likely to have surgery, Sanchez texted: "There's nothing to report. It's reckless." A source close to the quarterback said it would make no sense for Sanchez to delay the inevitable under the circumstances of the injury and the team's commitment to rookie Geno Smith. Sanchez, who saw Dr. Andrews in Gulf Breeze, Fla., is expected to make the decision on surgery within the next day or two, sources said. When Sanchez was injured Aug. 24, while playing behind a second-team offensive line, he appeared to be on the verge of claiming the starting job after a training camp battle with Smith. The injury led to criticism of coach Rex Ryan, who claimed he played Sanchez with 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter against the Giants because he wanted to win the preseason game. Owner Woody Johnson even hinted that Sanchez was partly to blame for the injury, saying the veteran failed to protect himself. Smith, a second-pick now firmly entrenched as the club's future signal-caller, won the first start of his career in Sunday's 18-17 victory over Tampa Bay. The rookie led a late drive aided by a key penalty for the winning score. He did have a fumble that led to a score and an interception, but was solid for the most part and finished 24 of 38 for 256 yards and a touchdown while leading the team with 47 yards rushing. The Jets visit the New England Patriots on Thursday night. Gratuitous Linky Keep it on Topic!!
Towards the end here I hated the guy but nobody wants to see him injured like that. Wish him a speedy recovery and the best of luck in his future endeavors.
I wanted him to get a chance under an actuall OC. Hoping he comes back 100% and gets a chance. If not here, at least somewhere where he can succeed. Funny thing is that he went himself for a 2nd opinion... Makes you question just wtf is going on.
Good luck to him in the future with another team. Never wanna see him under center for the Jets ever again, though.
Pretty obvious Sanchez needed surgery many days ago PS - thanks for re-opening the Sanchez needs surgery thread
The first doctor probably told him "you need surgery" and then, he knows that if he gets surgery he will be put some type of IR where you can't come back for the rest of the season. He wanted to have the possibility of returning to play, and winning the QB job, but if he has surgery his season is done, and whatever chances he had of staying around, as a backup to Geno after taking a pay cut for 2014, or as the starter if Geno struggled and he got the chance to take over again and if he then suddenly became consistently good. He wanted it to be not so serious, and before deciding to make this important decision of whether to have the surgery, he wanted to be sure that realistically he needs to have surgery. Maybe another doctor would say "Well, surgery could definitely fix it, but there is a non-surgical option that could also work." Or maybe another doctor would say "Actually the tear is slight, and it's really just that this Blah Blah Blah muscle has been severely bruised. You need to take these vitamins, and do these exercises, and that can heal it." Mark wanted to go from 95% sure to 99.75% sure that surgery is his only option, and he was holding out hope that maybe he didn't need surgery.
+1 things weren't looking great for him to start with, but this is no way to end the competition. If this goes down (as is likely I suppose) thats the end of his tenure in NY no if ands or buts about it. how things could have been...
End of his career period. Sad. He should have had the opportunity to compete with Geno and Simms. Now, no one will pick him up coming off a serious injury next year AND two awful back to back years. He "might" be a vet back up for a few years somewhere but at this point his career is over. Good character guy, no one should wish him any ill will. He may not have had the skill or mind set to excel as a Jet QB but Sanchez always had the best character and work ethic.
Too bad he had to go out like that. He was here for some good times so he'll be part of a team that I will remember.
I feel most sorry for those with Sanchez related usernames. I would have loved to have seen what Mark was capable of with a competent OC for once, but we never will (at least not here). I hope he gets a shot somewhere else down the line as for all his issues he seemed a decent enough guy.
Well, we signed Brady Quinn, so there's every chance some team will at least kick the tyres on him. Whatever he does get from now on he's going to have to earn through good play. That's probably a good thing for Sanchez ultimately.
Wow. It's amazing that 2 QBs find their careers come to a screeching halt of an end in NYJ jerseys in back to back years. After all this time bashing Sanchez, I pity him now. I would have much more preferred him end his days with the Jets holding a clipboard as opposed to being a victim of Rex's bumbling, foolish ways as a "head coach."
Idk why everybody, media included is making such a big deal of it. He isn't part of the 2013 plans, or any plans for that matter. All that matters is how Geno plays this year, and whether we should draft a qb next year.
We can finally move on with little second guessing now. Nobody wanted to see him hurt but most people wanted to see him gone. Smith can now play without one eye over his shoulder. At least the Jets will now see enough of him to know if they have to draft another QB next year.
Would never wish injury on a player. Hope he recovers soon. Good luck to him in his recovery. That being said, I never want to see him under center for the Jets again.
Like other people have said that pretty much is the end of his run with the Jets, which I'm fine with. I would never wish injury on anyone but in a way this is the best thing for the team as if he could come back in a few weeks there would be so much "should we stick with Geno or go back to Mark" talk, plus you'd have a disgruntled Sanchez if you benched him for Geno or you'd have a disgruntled Geno if you benched him for a Sanchez that was mediocre at best coming off an injury with a few weeks of no game action. This now gives the team a clear direction: Give Geno the ball for the season. If he's useless then we can see if we want to go in another direction come the offseason or if he proves he can be an NFL starter or at least has the potential to be an NFL starter then we can stick with him and draft/sign talent to surround him with.
