breaking that team up was a huge mistake

Rex and Tanny did a poor job grooming guys behind the vets to step in 2011 and that ultimately hurt us

its not about winning, its about winning the way certain guys want

    same with Knicks fans

they dont wanna with Melo and JR they want Gallo and Wilson Chandler and Jeremy Lin and Landry Fields

some Jets fans want Sanchez over Geno

but in the end winning should be everyone's goal

if we won with Mark under center thats all that would matter

Was just listening to the radio...

Another thing to keep an eye on is the absence of Kerley in the Punt Return game. He's pretty sure-handed.

Not sure who his replacement is gonna be; but if it's Kyle Wilson, I hope he's up for the task and doesn't fuck it up.

He may be sure-handed but he's also in love with the fair catch, something I don't particularly love when he's standing at the 5 yard line.

Unfortunately our roster has no proven punt returners, but perhaps Clyde Gates can do the job.

Do you have any numbers to back this up?

The only PR in recent years I have seen with this team that was in love with the fair catch was Wilson.

It's gonna be a huge game. All of the cards are aligning for us with all of their injuries, the weather, etc. I still think we will lose, but it won't be as embarrassing as some may think.

As dwalsh posted, Kerley's "36 fair catches on punts broke former Eagle Brian Mitchell's mark of 33 that had stood since 2000. No one else has registered even 30 fair catches since the statistic was first recorded in 1967, according to Stats, LLC."

That said, "he did average 10.9 yards the 19 times he did choose to attempt a punt return, 13th best among 39 players with at least 10 returns.

You're absolutely right, so here's my assessment.

Conclusion: I give the Jets a really good shot to win this game, and I think the people rating the game as Pats 13 point favorites are nuts. The key for the Jets will be generating enough offense, whether that be in the form of a touchdown from the defense or special teams.

Make no bones about it, without Amendola, Gronkowski, Bolden and Vereen, the Patriots are not a very good football team.

    On offense:

For their running game, I was most scared of Vereen. He has killed the Bills. He is very decisive, no dancing with this kid. Shifty, quick, and hits the hole hard. Can run between the tackles, outside, and catch the ball. IMO, he's a problem. I'm not sure why they even mess around with Ridley to begin with. Bolden packs a nice punch as a runner, but both of those guys wont be playing. It will be Ridley, Blount, and I think Leon Washington may be this week's surprise and play the Vereen role. Blount IMO is useless. I know he had success in TB but I'm not sure how. He is so damn slow its comical. Every time they handed him the ball I got excited because I knew it was a play for 3 yards or less. With Ridley, Blount and Washington, their running attack is probably average at best.

Their passing attack consisted of targeting Thompkins, a tight end, or running the ball on first and second downs, and throwing to Amendola to convert on 3rd. Brady has no chemistry with Thompkins or any of the tight ends, but Amendola on 3rd was lethal. We had him covered the majority of the time and Brady fit it in anyway, or Amendola made a great catch.

They didnt throw the ball deep once the entire game. It was all short/intermediate routes. They have no deep threat. Without Amendola, I dont see how they'll be effective. Edelman is a solid player, but when the entire defense can focus on him this week and take him out, theres really nothing left after that.

I have a lot of respect for the Jets D, and I dont see NE scoring many points. NE only scored 2 touchdowns on Buffalo's defense, and both times that was off turnovers by Buffalo in our own zone, giving NE possession inside the 30 yard line. If they can only score 2 touchdowns (with help) on Buffalo's defense, with Amendola and Vereen, I doubt they'll be able to get that on the Jets D without those players.

If the Jets can score 14-17 points I think they can win. And that brings me on to NE's defense.

NE is stout against the run. Their front 7 is pretty solid as run defenders, but they aren't great pass defenders. Their linebackers like Spikes and Hightower are heavy and dont run well in coverage. Their only real pass rusher is Chandler Jones, who was easily taken out by Cordy Glenn. In fact, they had to move Jones inside to DT to work against our guards so he could be more effective.

The secondary is not good. The Jets should be able to throw the ball on them. It will be tough sledding trying to run, especially since the Jets dont really have a running game to begin with, but there should be open passing lanes to work with. NE also doesn't really blitz, so Geno shouldnt see anything confusing.

All in all I think the Jets can win, and I'm debating whether to pick them in an upset. The only thing keeping me from picking the Jets outright is the fact that the Pats are home. But they are really vulnerable right now, and this win is ripe for the taking.

The Jets need to score 2 touchdowns, or one touchdown and a few FGs, and I think that's all it takes. That is certainly doable, even with the Jets offense. Whether those touchdowns come from the offense, defense or special teams doesnt matter. If the Jets can get a TD from the defense or ST, game over IMO. I like the Jets D better than last year (no longer old and decrepit) and I think Brady will struggle with no weapons, and they'll struggle to run the ball against the Jets D.

We'll see if I have the balls to pick the Jets outright come Sunday. I still havent decided. After writing this, that probably means the Pats will score 40 points.

I would like to add one caveat to that post, the Pats played contain, at no point in the game did they pin their ears back and attempt to get after the passer. It was schemed to shut down CJ and force EJ to beat us with his arm, not allow him to use his legs.

You will probably see a similar game plan against Geno, not much pass rushing, make the rookie use his arm and find receivers.

Awesome scouting report though on the Patriots defense - I can't imagine BB not coming up with a blitz plan to get to our QB. Let Geno pick and choose his spots and take what the defense is giving him.

See, now that was a quality post that actually showed you can contribute and talk actual football. Well done.

I think your assessment is fair. I definitely think that if the Jets can put up 20 points, they can win.

I hope that you are right that the Pats wont blitz very often, because Geno's efficiency dropped a good deal when under pressure. With a clean pocket, he can make pretty good decisions and fire in some accurate balls.

I just dont know if the Pats will play us that way though. As a poster above me said, the Pats didnt really pin their ears back and try and get after the QB. I think they tried to contain Spiller at all costs. It almost reminds me of the season opener last year when the Bills passrush was seemingly ineffective because the DL was playing the run.

As you said, we have not established a run game, and Im not sure if the Pats respect our "run game" enough to have a similar game plan as they did vs the Bills.

Itll be interesting to see which approach they take vs our offense.

Jets have no CJ or FJ on their team pats will not play contain. Expect more pressure from the Ends and Backers then the Bills games. I feel more push from the middle to get Geno to throw on the run, which regardless how athletic you are is still more inaccurate then staying in the pocket going through reads.

Don't get too excited, I think the Jets are in a no win situation here. At least for me, all the pressure is on the jets. If you win, no one will give you credit because the pats are decimated. If you lose, that would be worse, as the pats are decimated.

But that is only my opinion and the national media probably does not feel the same way judging by the fact they are spotting the jets 13 and also from the fact that they generally only follow teams with a surface level ignorance.

But hey, winning against two teams when you should probably lose doesn't look as bad when you're sitting 2-0.
