I attribute that to a defense coaching call. Maybe I'm wrong but I think they just called in the wrong play defensively and the Bucs/Freeman recognized it and adjusted to take advantage.
Don't leave Morninwig out of the equation. He did a great job tailoring a game plan the rookie could be comfortable with. It'll be interesting to see how the two develope and evolve as Geno gets more experience under his belt. The deep pass is coming...
Hill looked like he has done exactly what was needed taking his natural ability and starting to put together the mental aspects of the game combined with more confident hands. If he can continue to play to that level that is a huge swing in a key position, tying down himself and Kerley as 2 out of the needed 3 receivers of the future. Davis stepped in and proved to be a big immediate improvement at LB. Barnes also established himself as a threat rushing the passer. I think those factors helped Harris focus on doing what he does best, wrapping up the ball carrier. This defense has the potential to be crazy good when it gets Coples back, especially if Milliner works out. DuCasse seemed to do some good things, have to go back and see who wasn't holding up their end in pass pro in the first half. Overall I'd say that if Geno can keep playing to a good NFL QB level which he did more or less today this team could easily be a serious playoff contender this year. Lucky to end up winning but there is a lot to like considering we pulled it out.
This board has been ragging on him for a long time and I'm not sure why. I always thought he was a solid player...in fact more than solid. No he was no Vilma when he stepped into his role, but he's been more than an average player. Someone else said it in another thread - Harris plays real well when the front 4 are solid.
THUMB UP 1) Vlad, Winslow, Richardson, Snacks, Geno,Hill, Davis, Folk, 2) The Defensive Line, the constant pressure of the front line on the QB 3) The toughness of the whole team, particularly Kerley, Mangold, Hill 4) Rex's defensive game plan, MM play calling 5) Punting was superb THUMB DOWN 1) Cro, Ivory 2) excessive use of the wild cat 3) Timeliness of time outs THUMB SIDEWAY 1) Punt and Kick returns, poor field position 2) Pass coverage on third and long SPECIAL MENTION great support by the Jet fans.
No doubt big ole Snacks is the most underrated player on this team. He was solid last year, and he was impressive today. Man, their D-Line can be scary good.
Very well put. +1 all around. I still stand by my post that Malone was the best player at his position last year, and tonight he was ever as solid. Cro was... pardon the pun... brutal today. Sheldon Richardson was not playing like a rookie tonight. Barnes really stepped up, compared to what we saw of him in the pre-season games.
I think the Davis TD saving tackle of Jackson saved the game, and obviously Nick Folk won it with a great pressure kick. If Davis was Bart Scott running after Jackson were done! That was a huge game saving tackle.
Quick run down of the team: Offense: QB-Geno no words needed, he won. RB-Not sure why people arent liking Ivory, he wouldnt go down. FB-Good game WR-Nothing shocking, glad Holmes was in, thought Hill was good & in sync with Geno O-Line-it was a rollercoaster, ups and downs. Defense: D-Line:Obviously this teams biggest brightest spot. LB-Harris was solid,Demario brings much needed youth and Barnes seems like a great pickup CB-I'm scared, they looked bad, very bad. Safety-Both had solid games, but Landry had a dogshit effort on that tackle Special Teams: P-BEAST K-Folk-I love ya
Nick Folk is clutch. He can make you pull your hair out sometimes though. When the Jets lined up to kick the winning the FG, I was confident. Unless the competition is clearly better in training camp, Nick Folk should always get the edge on tie-breakers when it comes to making this Jets roster.
What hasn't been mentioned is how much we seem to have improved the run D (it's one game, I know, but wtf)... that might be the biggest unsung hero of them all.
Just to play devil's advocate here - and not to discount Demario's play (it was great to see his speed on that play). However, if Vincent Jackson scores there the Jets get the ball back with ~1:40 seconds left down by 6 points and they would have all timeouts available. I would actually rather have that scenario than ~:35 seconds and no timeouts down by 2.
I get what you're saying but there's no guarantee that Geno was going to march down the field and throw a TD pass. You can't make decisions based on what-if scenarios. Davis made an enormous play to prevent the TD. The Bucs only kicked a FG instead so it worked out that the Jets had a shot....
