We aren't players or coaches, they go into every game expecting and playing to win. we can look at things differently and no week 1 game is every must win. Just look at the last 3 years: 2010: lose opener, make title game 2011: win opener, miss playoffs 2012: win opener, miss playoffs it's always nice to start 1-0 and I think it is more important for a team like this that could have confidence issues w/ a poor start but no week 1 game is must win.
i think this game is of utmost importance. doesn't matter if its game one. we need to see good football on both sides of the ball - win or lose. i am a bit concerned about TB coming in here and taking a beating to the jets. i expect schiano and crew to make good strides this year and many times in the second year of a rebuilding program the first couple games are well played by that team.
Here is why I feel pretty good going into Sunday: -historically we always seem to beat them, I know that doesn't mean much but even when TB has been good and we have sucked we have found ways to beat them. One of those strange quirks like how we can't beat Philly. -Rex is 3-1 in season openers w/ lone loss being a 1 pt loss. he has his teams ready to play week 1. -all the negative press will have this team fired up, rex is great w/ the "us against the world" thing. -TB is a slightly better version than us on paper, they aren't some juggernaut.
Just like every year around this time I always say lets just play the game. See what we have and move on to the next one. Go Jets
It's important to show well, win or lose. A bad showing just reinforces all the negative commentary about the team and the wolves will be out in full force. Tampa Bay may be a mediocre NFC team, but we're a less than mediocre AFC team until proven otherwise. Tampa is clearly more talented overall. We may have the coaching edge, but they have a big edge in offensive personnel and with the acquisitions in their secondary, are close to us in talent on D. They should be favored, but we are at home, and Geno is a wildcard. If he plays well, that eliminates their edge at QB and gives us a real shot to win. If he turns the ball over, we could lose by double digits. Martin is no joke and even if Cro can match up on Jackson, they have other capable wideouts who could take advantage of a very inexperienced secondary. I'm hoping for a win, but I'm sort of expecting a loss (a close one, not a blowout). Maybe like 21-17 Bucs or something of that nature. I'd love for Geno to surprise me and play great.
The Jets will lose the opening by "epic Biblical Proportions". I know this because some assclown on the radio said so.
I like your above "feel good" stuff, but we'll need to look at our team objectively and certainly not in the context of what we did in the past against the Bucs (totally meaningless) or what Rex's former opening days were like (equally as meaningless on Sunday). Now, all media-reporting, super-superficial eyes will be on Geno... and ridiculously so to the point of absurdity. But the really experienced Jets fan (like those who meaningfully post here, including yourself) will be looking at how all the other components match up to another NFL opponent intent on actually winning the game, not participating in the meaningless "Preseason Games." That's what I'll be watching. We all need to look beyond the Geno Headlines and observe how the rest of the team performs vs. a real NFL team intent on winning their season opener. At least I'll be spared the "El Guapo Press Conference" after the game, in which we were all subject to excuse upon excuse of nonchalant, Californication-like dribble about why things went wrong.
It was sheer skill. When Geno baited that bullying DB into shoving him on the sideleines, he knew full well that we'd have the yards to kick the FG. Without that plan and execution in mind, we lose. Only a genious like Rex could come up with that sort of a play. Brilliant!
you can't explain it just like the Key game in 2000. TB had that game in the bag and we came back late. We always find a way, just like we always find a way to lose to Philly.
100% agree. THis was what we needed to happen to give Gino the confidence moving forward. He knows he can win now, he knows what not to do for next time hopefully (throw the ball away, Gino!!!). Will the first game decide the season, no - however this start is exactly what we needed for momentum moving forward. GO GangGreen!!!!!
If you are a playoff caliber team the opener is no different than any other game. If you are a team being looked at as garbage or rebuilding it is huge. It can swing the mentality of a team from well this year will suck to hey maybe we aren't as bad as people think. This game got a little fire going I think. Question is can they carry it over and be at worst 2-1 after 3?
