I'm no Woody fan, and he is bad, but he's not THAT bad that we should pray for a different owner. You make a good point that there are plenty of other D-bags out there, far worse then Woody. In fact, I'd rather the Wilpon's sell the Mets ahead of my Jets being sold.
Oh, so YOU get to arbitrarily install a surrogate 'new' owner' into this discussion and then tag on an assumption to boot? Is that how this works; you get to frame the discussion? Aside from the "Return-to-Sender" letter writing humor (lighten up btw), and aside from that snake Loria's shakedown of Miami ... besides all of that, the Loria that you used as your arbitrary 'surrogate jet owner' (along with Donna Shalala et al) represents this (below) to me, and without getting into details it nevertheless touched me personally and still pisses me off to this day: And speaking of stadiums, after the West Side Project was 86'd courtesy of Dolan (Cablevision) and his Albany wallet Sheldon Silver, Woody Johnson DIDN'T have to go into another "little brother" setup and instead could've had the Jets play in their own stadium; there were other places to build. Yeah, call it Metlife....to some, it's Giants Stadium II. Yeah, I acknowledge that Woody isn't the skinflint Loria is, but imho he still painted the Jets into an "identity corner" with his co-hab agreement with da classy Giants. sorry to others for the semi off-topic ramble.
While I agree that a West Side stadium would've been great, at least MetLife is a true 50/50 co-owned stadium with the Giants. Economically, it does make more sense to have a $1,300,000,000 stadium that is used 16 times a year instead of just 8. Also, if Woody had to pay $2,000,000,000 or whatever a Manhattan stadium would've cost, there's no way he would still be willing to field a roster using the max salary cap. Back on topic- I do think that Woody really wants to field a competitive team, and he has enough sense to avoid blowing up the team every time there's a non-playoff season like some owners do. (I.e. the Raiders.) Idzik seems to be a "build through the draft" GM, and I think that the long-term prospects for the Jets are much better than they were when the Jets were mortgaging the future with trades and free agency trying to "win now" with a QB at the very bottom of the statistical heap. I think the subtext of the letter is that the team is in "soft rebuild" mode, don't expect the playoffs this year or the next, but by 2015 the Jets should start to become consistently competitive as Idzik's draft picks mature and competition makes the roster better and deeper (as opposed to relying heavily on a few elite but old free agents, and having no depth behind them.) I think he's also saying, on the other hand, that this year won't be a disaster and the team is definitely worth watching even if there's no Super Bowl on the immediate horizon.
Also received this letter today and I barely skim-read them anymore. Total horseshit. Treats us like children with the "surprise giveaways" on game day. A real fucking moron, this guy.
fuck fucking woody johnson and the fucking diaz brothers. (someone must know the reference) hey douchelord how about not raising ticket prices 500 percent you fucking cunt of a man. then building a complete piece of shit building and trying to sell it as world class. then trying to sell tickets on the fucking moon for 105 bucks then implementing a class system then scaring people into thinking they wouldnt be able to get tickets then bullshitting them then offering no upgrades unless you bitched and complained, all the while offering better seats to new people who have never even given a fuck then trying to build a new fancy pants fanbase of cunts just like yourself. notice how they all have run away and now all the real fans you fucked right out of seats arent coming back. go fuck yourself insert 17a new stadium thread
Get him, Murrell. GET HIM! Who wouldn't give a month's pay just for the privilege of beating Woody Johnson's ass in a closed room? I don't even hate the guy and I would love to hear him beg for mercy.
At first glance, Alleycat's post seems like a rant. But read it. If you aren't a Jets season ticketholder, welcome to our world.
LOL! I used to defend him (back when everyone said he was cheap), but I can no longer defend him for his idiocy in running a successful NFL franchise. He's becoming more and more like Jerry Jones (w/o the 3 rings)
Nice post Counselor. While I acknowledge the 50/50 split on paper, I still would've liked to have seen the "Jet brand" positioned in more of a stand alone manner. As for the West Side Stadium, I only cited that since that was the project that was on the table (pre Metlife). At the risk of unintentionally alienating our N.J. Jet bretheren, I thought a more traditional Jet-centric location in the City Field/National Tennis Center neck of the woods would've fit the bill. And with the flexibility that comes with a retractable roof, such a venue could serve beyond hosting only 8 games a year. Speaking of retractable roofs, as you probably know, besides the Jets, that West Side project was to serve as the cornerstone to Bloomberg's 2012 Oympic sales pitch to the IOC. But that's a moot point at this juncture. And besides, even if it were built, while a Manhattan locale would've given the Jet brand some serious cache, it would also have come at the price of no tailgating. No tailgating would've put a crimp on the "gameday experience" not to mention denying TGG fan get together attendees the *pleasure* of witnessing (as rumored) Hobbes showcasing his fan favorite drinking-induced "technicolor yawn" exhibition. hmy: ---"Ralph!" Lastly, I did previously say that I didn't view Johnson as a nickle-nursing skinflint in the mold of a Jeff Loria when it came to the cap. But at the same time, I do think he could've addressed the "new stadium-old, loyal fan" dynamic differently. - regards -
The only thing Woody has done that effects the team is hired Idzik and he used a firm to do it. People act like Woody is this devious mastermind behind the scenes and gives Rex secret commands like demanding a trade for Tebow. He's not a hands on owner. Just stop it. Take off the tin foil hat.
Not sure if anyone has said this yet...F&*% woody johnson. He is the "K-Fed" of NFL owners. He needs to eat excrement and expire.
Thanks- yeah, I think we're pretty much on the same page. It would've been amazing to have "Jets Stadium" or even "Namath Stadium", with the big Jets logo in the middle of the field instead of the NFL's logo, permanent Jets signs up hanging from the stadium, and have it actually be in New York. Then the Jets would be able to sort of say, we're the NY team, those are the New Jersey Giants, and there'd be no counter-argument. As it is, we have the bizarre situation of the two "New York" teams playing in New Jersey, and the only NFL team that actually plays in New York state is the Buffalo Bills (until the owner passes away and they move the team. Also- kind of weird that they named the team after the man who tried his very best to make buffalos extinct.) I agree that putting a Jets stadium in Queens would've been better than Manhattan, because Manhattan would be much more expensive to build in, and there'd be no tailgating, so that would diminish the experience a lot. Also agree that it was a mistake not to put a retractable roof on the stadium, especially since that cost would be split by 2 teams, so it's not as much of a burden for each. The Giants wouldn't go for it, but Woody tried. On the other hand, it is kind of fun to see games played in the snow in November and December, something kind of old school and gritty about it- but I'm sure most season ticket holders would rather not be exposed to the elements in December. I hope it snows heavily for the Super Bowl this year. As for NYC hosting the Olympics, I am very glad that that didn't happen. Every city that hosts the Olympics ends up losing literally billions of dollars, and NYC would have lost over $10b. (The argument is always that the stadiums and big swimming complex will "pay for themselves" over time, but they never do, and after 30 - 40 years they're crap anyway, plus you have to spend money to maintain them which offsets the revenue you get post-Olympics.) You do get Olympic tourists, but many of the normal tourists that would have come stay away fearing the crowds, so there's a big net tourism loss. (I experienced this when I visited London last year during the Olympics- it was a ghost town, hardly any tourists at all! Newspaper articles were talking about how restaurants were going out of business, and the tourism industry was greatly suffering.) So, I'm fine with other countries hosting the Olympics, let them foot the bill for it rather than America. I agree that a Jets/Namath Stadium near Citi Field would've been best though.
