This is the one example where that is not true. Rex could name Mark the starter, but declare he is not ready for Tampa Bay. If Geno struggles vs. the Buccaneers and I would assume the Patriots, then Mark can be inserted Week 3 if he is healthy. On the other hand, if Geno plays well the first two games, despite naming Mark the starter, Rex can say he is going with the hot hand Geno and no fan would object.

Progress? What from four turnoves in 35 minutes to three, hoping one of them snt a Safety...Progress? AYFKM?

Dude, there are 16... Games. Thos isnt OTJT... You can do it or you cant. And Right now, today, hes more Vlad Ducasse. Than Mark Sanchez.

geno can hold on to the starter spot if he plays well in Sanchez's absence. if MM feels he has some momentum going and has gone through enough learning curve to continue running the offense then its unlikely he gets dethroned by his predecessor.

if he doesn't? well its sanchez's job till the playoffs are out of the picture. (if it ever is) Smith is given some more live reps time to learn from and is that much more ready to take over the job.

this injury is unfortunate but it might make the QB situation more clear. as far as I can tell its all on what Mornhinweg wants most and it could go either way at this point.

precisely, its no big deal as it would be if it were week 8 or something.

Sanchez had 3 crushing turnovers during his brief play before his injury. I'd take Ducasse at qb before Muck.

Are YOU kidding me Hobbes? Please dont diss a QB for a few turnovers in his first extended preseason time and say he cant progress and then defend Mark Sanchez who is the legitimate King of turnovers in the REGULAR season. Please.

Thats gotta be the most hypocritical statement ever Hobbes.

For what it's worth, reports from NFL.com say MM favors Geno even with the injury

It was his first NFL game and as expected he made rookie mistakes. He made a lot of good plays as well. I think once he gets a few games under his belt I think he'll be fine.

Well if you are using rookie preseason, 1st start, as the benchmark... Mark was light years ahead of Geno.

From what I saw of Sanchez tonight, he's out a few weeks.

Excellent point jaywayne! I too was more focused on SIMMS overall qb skills than his stats.

    Positive points:
1)-Able to take a hit & get right back up (& he took many).
2)-Did not "look" intended rec'vr on pass play coupled w. the ability to make snap decisions to ck-off covered target & hit open man.
3)-Ability to either "loft" or "fire" throws w. above-average accuracy.

    Negative points:
    1)-Inexperience/Rookie
    2)-Inexperience/Rookie
    3)-Inexperience/Rookie

    Requisite for Improvement/Named Starter
    1)-1st Team Reps
2)-Sanchez'continues suffering affects fr shoulder injury.
    3)-Smith's wildly,disastrous opening-game perf.

Let's just see how this all plays out.....!
