I don't think he is being judged harshly at all, he never turns around for the ball, he will give yards away every time they throw deep against him.
There was an article a week or two ago about him being the "Brad Smith" of the defense. Nickle, CB, Safety, hybrid, etc. So no he is not a #2 CB, he's a #3 CB and a bunch of other things. Cro sat last game so he had to play. He isn't what I was hoping for in a CB but there could be worse. Trufant and Walls have come to play.
It's one thing to be bad, it's another thing to showboat after having nothing to do with the outcome of the play. How many times does a QB overthrow a (usually open) receiver, only to see Kyle Wilson waving his arms and wagging his finger at the receiver like he had anything to do with it. Also, it's ironic that there was the article written a few days ago about Kyle Wilson being the versatile utility defensive back. If there was ever a "jack of all trades, master of none" candidate...
After looking at his contract he won't be getting cut this year or probably next either. We would have to absorb almost everything he is scheduled to make in dead money. We just have to live with it.
Our fan base is really dumb with their opinions of Kyle Wilson. He hasn't lived up to his 1st round selection but if he was a 6th round everyone would love him. The idea of cutting him is absolutely retarded.
He would get worked by any receiver when he doesn't turn to look for the ball which he almost never does.
Kyle Wilson never turns around on a pass, and that is pass interference every time. He still has not learned, and as I think he should be moved to safety, I trust that the Jets coaches know more football than I and I trust their judgement and the fact that they haven't made the switch. However, people seem to claim that they hate Wilson because he showboats when a QB overthrows the receiver. Often, an overthrow is because the QB is throwing to a spot and the receiver didn't make it there in time....which is usually because the DB jammed the route.
Giving up a few completions a game isn't abysmal. It's pretty much average unless you're a top ranked CB. Everyone's spoiled by Revis & Cromartie and expect him to make every single play or he sucks horribly. What about all the plays you don't see him on where he covers well and as a result the ball is thrown elsewhere? It's easy to sit back and nitpick, when he's our slot CB playing against #1s on the outside while Cromartie is out. Cut him some slack. He's no Cromartie, but he's still average if not slightly above average.
If he's that good, why doesn't he EVER TURN AROUND when the ball is in the air? Clearly, he can see the Wr's face and knows the ball is inbound. He always gets flagged for blindly trying to block a ball he can't see why? BECAUSE HE NEVER, EVER, TURNS AROUND.
Hopefully a move to free safety is in the works, i just hate to see a player drafted so high and just being wasted or cut. Move him around he's decent, has speed since he cant turn just try putting him as far ahead of the ball as possible. He'd have to add some weight about 10 lbs, hopefully this happens so it can save his career.
I think the bashing on Wilson stems down to these 3 things: 1) He was drafted in 1st round, but hasn't shown that level of talent 2) He plays the body instead of the ball, which leads to lack of awareness and never getting his head turned toward the ball 3) The excessive celebrating when its totally unwarranted (which annoys me the most) All that said though, he can be a contributor on this team. He's not bad in the slot, and could potentially see more time at Safety i think (with the ball in front of him), as his career goes on.
Can he hit? Can he lay out somebody? With the new restrictions on hitting, can he stop a RB w/o hitting too high or too low? If the answer is no to any of those questions, his career as a safety will certainly be a short one.
