Yeah, i figure they're going to try to keep Spadola and Obomanu. Maybe they'll practice squad Spadola depending on what happens with Holmes.
The jets already have their 6 WRs for the roster - Holmes, Kerley, Hill, Gates, Spadola, & Obomanu. No room for Braylon (except maybe as an injury replacement later on). Zach Rogers may end up on the practice squad.
Damn, I know he lost a step or two but he still looked like a good possession receiver. Hope to see him back, but maybe I'm living in the past.
They will keep 6 WRs since Gates and Spadola can be relied upon to be huge special teams guys(Gates maybe as the KR, Spadola as a tackler) unlike Edwards who was strictly a WR. That along with him being dinged up cost him his spot. If Braylon was anything good at special teams, he gets the 6th spot but Spadola is more versatile. Holmes Hill Kerley(Punt returner) Gates(Kick returner) Spadola(Special teams tackler) Obamanu/MoMass(Whoever shines, they need a big target outside of Hill) Rogers will be a practice squad guy. Loser of MoMass/Obamanu(I think MoMass will get cut) will be a free agent. Someone will snatch Spadola up quick....he had a lot of offers from teams after the draft but he was smart to see the Jets position players were pretty mediocre.
Lack of special teams did Braylon in, the 4th and 5th WRs of a team HAVE TO be special teams guys. Spadola and Gates do this. Gates made McKnight expendable as the kick returner and Spadola makes Edwards expendable as he's healthier, younger and is more versatile.
I'd be surprised if Obamanu didn't make the team. He has seen time with the first team, and versatile enough to play inside or outside, as well as effective ST gunner. i like the idea of strong vets on the ST. We have to improve there as well. Give Kotwica something to work with. Holmes, Hill, Kerley, Obamanu, Spadola. I think the 6th spot open between Gates and Massoquoi, with ST's factor being the difference. Seems that edge will go to Gates if he can return kicks. Zach Rogers unfortunately we'll have a hard time keeping him on PS. Edwards only shot to come back is in event of injury to say a Gates or Hill. His only real value left is on red zone offense (which i wouldn't mind seeing). but hard to justify the roster slot.
I knew the Massaquoi signing wasn't good news but was hopeful he'd still make it. I think he can still play, I hope this is an after week 1 type of deal that they tried to do w/ Coles in 2010.
I'd like to have him on team as well. it's possible they bring him back, but it may take an injury. do you think Massaquoi will even make the team? I think Spadola's surprising play was the difference of Edwards getting cut.
I think the probability that Holmes is ready week 1 and the fact that Braylon cannot play STs sent him packing but hopefully he is back. I think it is a good sign for our WR corps if they feel it is good enough that they can release Braylon.
If Obamanu, Spadola, Gates and Massaquoi are all playing special teams as gunners and/or returners the Jets might keep 7 WR's. It's not like the position is an area of strength for the team. We might see a trade or surprise cut also. That's what competition is about, getting the most out of your resources.
Some have mentioned bringing him back, but if that were the case he would have been a later cut, rather than one of the first. It's more likely they included him in the first wave to give him chance to go somewhere else. To me, this means they expect Holmes contributing sooner.
Not necessarily. if he was let go w/ the idea they would bring him back after week 1 so his salary isn't guaranteed then it would make sense to do it now and still be able to evaluate the other WRs for another week +. I am pretty sure we released Coles before the final preseason game in 2010 and wanted to bring him back after week 1 but Coles decided to retire.
