I really don't think any Jet fans would actively root against Sanchez in a regular season or playoff game (i.e. in a game that counts). However, I do think there is significant portion of Jets fans who have been adamantly rooting against him thus far this preseason, because they sincerely feel he will always be a mistake-prone quarterback, and don't want to see their team burdened by his blunders any longer. There is an enormous difference between those two perspectives. Also, I think the notion that "Jet fans" are particularly susceptible to irrational thinking or reactionary outbursts is a fallacious one. Statistically speaking, Jet fans are just a randomly assembled segment of society, as a whole. As a result, I think your feeling of "embarrassment" at being a Jet fan "sometimes" is unwarranted. Even, if there actually is a subset of "Jet fans" that would actively root against the most important player on their "favorite" team in a meaningful game, I don't think you should assign the blame to Jet fans, as a whole. In other words, there are morons in every fan base. Tribal idiocy is certainly not exclusive to Jet fans.
It has already happened, fans were rooting against him in reg season games last year. sports fans in general can be embarrassing but I am associated w/ this teams fans and they make it embarrassing to be a fan of the team at times.
That's a ridiculously simple question to answer. If I was coach I'd start the guy who got us there. Right?
If they were actually rooting against him in a regular season game (I think people often claim outrageous things that have no basis in reality), then they weren't true Jet fans.
Not to start an argument on this subject in particular, but if you recall, a fan told Sanchez to tear an ACL thru twitter a week or two ago. That's way more than a simple interwebz facepalm. Its not only embarrassing that someone would actually send that, but it ended up on the NFL's website which basically shows the fans of 31 other teams, a microcosm of this team's fanbase is, and how moronic "we" can be.
I read on twitter an interesting scenario- Right now if you are the Jets and you do not think Sanchez will be ready for a few weeks, you can declare him the starter. You let Geno play until Sanchez is 100%, and then evaluate what he has done. If he has improved and been a positive to the team, you can just say you are going with the hot hand (like Kaepernick last year). If Geno appears to be completely not ready, you put Sanchez in like it was the plan all along.
I don't think anyone WANTS Sanchez to do bad, but the thing is that it's year 5 and we know he won't do much more from this point on. He is basically destined to be a back up QB heading into the future. Even with Marty's new offense I think Mark has looked pretty terrible, still staring down receivers and putting the ball in difficult places for the receivers to catch aka face first into a defender. Sanchez probably would start on 2 other teams (Oakland & Jacksonville) but is a back up everywhere else. Geno will get starts this year. I think they'll even throw him in against the Eagles just to see what he can do. Otherwise Sanchez is starting the season.
Whoever sent that isn't worth writing about. I don't think it's fair, or particularly logical, to assign the blame for that kind of blatant stupidity to Jets fans, as a whole. As I mentioned before, "Jets fans" are nothing more than a randomly assembled segment of society, as a whole. Once more, there are morons in every fan base. (And I would argue that, if whoever sent that was being sincere when they did so, he/she isn't even a real Jets fan to being with)
The whole situation is pretty screwed up at this point. This is one of the areas where competition was bad for the Jets because the need to have a real competition at QB prevented them from turning the page on Mark Sanchez before we predictably got into a maze of contradictions centered largely on him. Geno not being in the 1% of all rookie QB's who are immediately firing on all cylinders complicates things.
To put it another way, there is no logical justification for assuming that the loony opinions of the fringe element of any fan base is representative of the respective whole. Thus, the term "microcosm" is terribly misused here. Furthermore, there is no purely scientific (either psychological, or otherwise) or logical reason to believe that Jet fans are particularly prone to irrational thinking or reckless, reactionary outbursts. The reason for this is that Jet fans are a randomly assembled group of thousands upon thousands of human beings. These sweeping generalizations that people make about this fan base or that fan base are not only inherently illogical, they are patently absurd.
all we have to do is read posts on this board, the generalizations don't apply to all obviously but there are a large # of posters on here who belong in that category.
I feel that way about a certain percentage of the posters on every message board that I have ever been to, regardless of topic of interest. Irrational thinking, crowd mentality, and reactionary idiocy are all central to the human condition. None of this is exclusive to being a Jets fan. It's hard enough being a Jets fan and dealing with the constant barrage of media outlets who paint our franchise and our existence as a bad joke. Don't feed into that nonsense by proliferating the myth that there is something innately wrong with us. Don't do that to yourself.
I understand that, all fanbases have their share of idiots but I am around our fanbase more so I see it more whether on here, at games or wherever.
The sad thing is MCelroy is more prepared to start than Geno right now. If Geno starts on opening day he will might get shell shocked and be ruined before he figures it out. I hope Sanchez is ready to go so he can babysit the first 8 games until Geno can take over.
Exactly and that is why you feel the way you do about Jet fans. But just know that you would feel that way about any fan base you hung around as much as you do Jet fans.
Thank you!! It's moronic to generalize fans. In the end, we're all human beings. Some good, some bad.
