Agree that the darksiders get out of control, but at the same time you're making a sweeping generalization about the fanbase as a whole buying the whole media schtick hook, line and sinker. And that's not true. Many of us see the Menthas, the Ciminis, the Meyers, the NFLTN, ESPN, Fatcessa trolls for what they are. The part in bold above I assume refers to Sanchez getting run out of town? If so, I'm not sure where you're coming from given that it's Mark's 5th year in the league. And he's still showing some 'issues' (e.g. decisions) that you'd think he'd have cleaned up by now. And because of that: vvv Agree with them or not, you have to at least understand why some of the natives are getting restless at this stage of the game and why others (again agree with them or not) are not only getting restless but are convinced that Mark's ship has sailed and why they're ready to turn the page. And it runs both ways. Last night I read some comments from the pro-Mark side of the aisle, particularly from posters who until very recently hadn't posted anything on this board for months suddenly letting their fanboy bias get the better of them by either down playing a good play by Smith or derisively going to town after a pick. It goes both ways. As to your "STFU" comment: say wha'? And yes, Cimini is a scrub. And, least you think I'm some Sanchez detractor or Smith fanboy, here's my objective account of both of them from Cortlandt: http://forums.theganggreen.com/showpost.php?p=2805706&postcount=109. Further, please refer to my "The Green & White Scrimmage" thread in this section.
Exactly, there isn't much to be positive about right now with the team. The difference between Cimini and Mehta and message board posters is that they get paid to spew their opinions. I bet any one of us would be hated by the Jets fanbase if we were hired to write opinion pieces that aren't written with green colored glasses. Jets fans hate their articles because it's the truth (for the most part) and when the mirror is turned on you sometimes you don't like what you see. Until this team gets its shit together we're gonna continue to see these types of articles from the aforementioned. Teams like the Giants, Pats, Packers, Steelers etc get the benefit of the doubt that we don't get and it is what it is. They've earned that right from the media.
IMHO that's nonsense. The Jets are hardly a model franchise, and they're hardly the Keystone Cops that they get portrayed as with regularity. Last year was the first under .500 season in 6 years. Just the 2nd in 8 years, and the third in SEVENTEEN SEASONS. Between the last three under .500 seasons in Jets history, the Jets have appeared in the playoffs seven times, winning seven playoff games. They haven't been the league doormat that they are constantly portrayed to be in nearly two decades. They've been a high second tier NFL franchise for something like three regimes straight now. The way you read about them in the NY papers, and hear them on the radio it's like they're the Raiders or the Jaguars or the Lions or some shit. It's completely ridiculous, and the only reason for it is that completely unfounded drama sells, and the fanbase has been eating it up for decades. And the ironic part? The reason that the Jets haven't been able to be anything higher than a high tier II franchise in the NFL is because they haven't at any point in the past 18 years or so had a series of losing seasons where they can develop a homegrown core of elite young talents through the drafts. But somehow according to the media, every Jets season has been hapless forever, because the organization is a dysfunctional circus. Figure that one out.
What a stupid post. Who cares about preseason records? In '92 the Jets went 5-0 in preseason. Regular season? 4-12. It means nothing. Absolutely nothing. Staying healthy, players competing for and winning roster spots, and coaches evaluating talent is what matters in preseason. Preseason win-loss records mean NOTHING. Have you ever heard a coach have a bad regular season and say, "Yeah, but we went undefeated in the preseason." Come on.
Cimini just bashes and bashes everything that happens with the occasional side article about an underdog player. The way he ranted and raved about Rex Ryan playing Sanchez was stupid. Sanchez and Geno have been switching between 1s and 2s all training camp. An injury like that could have just as easily happened with the 1s in and we don't even know the extent of the injury yet. Cimini does just suck. If Sanchez did not get hurt, Cimini says nothing. Whenever anything happens the guy immediately looks for a way to blame Rex.
Post of the weekend. If you look at the facts, this organization shouldn't be the joke they're made out to be. But let's face it, only a Super Bowl victory cures all of this. Especially when their same city rivals keep having so much success of their own.
Not to mention that if Sanchez never played, Rex would be getting slaughtered because he said before the fucking game to the media multiple times that Sanchez was going to play.
Everything you said is spot on, on the surface. But keep in mind that since Favre Woody has been a headline chasing whore. So when you play that game this is what you have to deal with. From all the Rex guarantees, Tebow, them continuing to trot Sanchez out there, Holmes meltdown at the end of '11, former players talking out their ass etc. All that has created an image of dysfunction. Us as fans can overlook all that because we don't care about it. But it is something that exists, and will continue to exist until they change the philosophy, something the hiring of Idzik was designed to do. We may not be doormats like the Raiders and Jaguars. But we're currently a joke because that's the environment that the owners have allowed to happen. Pre Favre the Jets couldn't buy space on the back of the newspapers. So in essence Woody got his wish.
I agree with this. The Jets wanted excessive publicity, they got it, starting with the 4 inch wonder, and they got what they wished for. Then the team went downhill and it turned on them. But because the Jets put themselves out there, still doesn't make 90% of the shit written about them in the tabloids true either. Do I wish that the Jets were a more close to the vest type organization? I do, and I'm glad they seem to be moving that way, albeit a day late and a dollar short. But Just because the Jets basically invited themselves to be overly scrutinized, doesn't mean I'm going to not hold the NY and national media accountable for the straight up shit they write about the franchise on a regular basis.
This goes back to what I said before and that the difference between the beat writers and message posters are that they get paid and we don't. It's all opinions, I personally ignore it and don't let it bother me.
I don't generally pay attention to it, because most of it is TMZ style nonsense, it's just frustrating to follow/talk about the team throughout the season when the prevailing opinions of fans all over the place is that media fueled circus bs. I'm a fan of really every sport outside of the NBA, and I find the most enjoyable season to follow, from strictly a "following your favorite team" standpoint is the NHL, where US media coverage is just about nonexistant. Fans opinions actually come from watching the players on the ice and not Real Housewives of New Jersey style drama BS coming from the Daily News and WFAN.
You know what bothers me the most? Sanchez is injured, it's unclear as to how long but in the meantime none of these beat writers want to talk about how this effects the game planning for next week, or what it means for McElroy or Simms, or discuss options about FA QBs. Instead every beat writer and their mother are talking about how dumb Rex was to have him out there, like that is great, we get it, it was a bad decision, criticising it won't change what happened. Why don't these writers ever discuss the future and options moving forward, instead of criticizing the past?
At this point there is nothing to indicate Sanchez is injured and I personally doubt that he is. He may be sore, he may have a bruise but until I hear otherwise he is not injured and THEN how are all these tools like Cimini and Mehta going to look?
Well said. At times you have to tear something down completely before it can be rebuild properly. The Jets have had a number of changes that made them competitive but middle of the road. To become a winning franchise you need a long term plan and the commitment to develop from the foundation outwards for the long haul. Can not be distracted with short term fixes. This requires the vision from the owner on down to set the plan in motion and stick to it. Having said that, every franchise has a subset of shitty fans that do nothing but bitch and whine. The Jets are no exception. But IMHo no where across the other 31 teams we find the awful combination of mindless irresponsible media that dwells on the sensationalization of controversy, and the massive amount of fans that buy into it and totally feed on that BS.
As far as the bitching and moaning that comes with the media market you are in. First 2 years with Rex everything was gravy and now the NYJ are the laughing stock of ESPN and NFL network. It's about a long term plan like you said and from my first impressions of Idzik he seems to have one so far. I can't wait to see what he does next year with the cap situation improved.
Disagree with the bold. People were calling us a circus in 2010 that Rex couldn't control. Animal House the football team ,etc etc. They were still piling on, but we as fans didn't care as much because we were cruising and winning.
Whitlock and Olbermann just went off at Cimini and Mehta. Whitlock said roughly that technology has exposed the incompetency of the newspaper industry, specifically beat reporters. Olbermann's rant lasted for 15+ minutes. You can see a small clip at http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=espn:9603590
