INJURY UPDATE Rich Cimini @RichCimini 4m Hearing that Mark Sanchez does not have a fractured collarbone. So there's that. MRI will tell extent of soft-tissue damage, if any. #Jets
Shhhh that won't get people riled up and talking about the Jets and stuff. If we are such a bad franchise recently, I wish one writer or sports reporter would just line up records, playoff appearances, etc over the last 10-15 years and say "and all these teams have done worse than the Jets, if the Jets are joke, these franchises should be demoted to college football"
I think this thinking is off - how did Sanchez not show he was, at this point, a better option than Smith? Say what you will, and of course you will because it is easy ammo to pick up and fire, but mistakes occur in preseason across ALL talent levels. Eli Manning failed to outperform Curtis Painter last night. Of course Eli has earned whatever comes his way and I digress, but Sanchez (sans his first two bad passes of preseason) hasn't looked as bad as people love to try and tell themselves this preseason. Plain and simple. Somehow, a rookie QB throwing 3 picks and committing a safety in less than one game is nothing to worry about. Again, I am not pro-Sanchez as much as I am amused by the hypocrite Geno fans. Just food for thought - In Sanchez's first two preseasons, (rookie and sophomore) his QB ratings were: 2009 (111.0) and 2011 (102.9). What does it all mean?
Because what separated Sanchez and Smith was not Sanchez playing good, it was Smith playing like a rookie. Nobody was "winning" the QB comp, they were both losing and Sanchez just wasn't losing as badly. It's like if you and your friend play two games of Madden against someone. Your friend is playing for the first time and loses 49-10. You have been playing for 5 years and you lose 49-21. At the end of the day, you are better but not because you looked great, but because you just aren't as bad. Not very confidence inspiring there. Because 1 of Smith's INTs was a bad throw, good decision. The second INT was bad decision, bad throw, a Sanchez type INT. Except Geno is a rookie and this is 1st real NFL speed game, and Sanchez is in his 5th. The third INT was similar to Sanchez's RZ INT. Pre determined where he was throwing without regard for the coverage. Except again Geno is a rookie and rookies routinely stare down/pre determine reads, a 5th year QB shouldn't. There is more potential for Geno because he's making rookie mistakes in his ifrst game ever. There is less potential for Sanchez because he's making rookie mistakes in his 5th year. That doesn't mean Geno should start game 1, I said before preseason Sanchez is probably starting week 1, but that doesn't mean we can write Geno off as a QB.
Sanchez will start the opener. I am pretty confident he just had a stinger and will be fine for the regular season which is good cause Geno did not look ready at all.
I am not doubting Geno's future. I am stating that Sanchez has not been as bad as he has been described as being this preseason. I know - you and everyone else disagree.
Despite numerous posters having already explicitly pointed it out, you continue to miss the point. Geno Smith is a rookie who made his first NFL start last night. This is Mark Sanchez's 5th preseason. He has made over 50 NFL career starts. You can't compare Mark's mistakes to Geno's mistakes in a vacuum. You just can't. Doing so only serves to further reveal: a)Your blatant bias OR b) Your blatant ignorance. Also, as for the bolded, you forgot to mention Sanchez both mishandling a shotgun snap last night (inexcusable) as well as allowing the clock to run out at the end of the first half last week, on the opponent's three yard line (comically inexcusable). We have two, mistake prone quarterbacks who play like rookies . . . But only one of them actually is a rookie.
I don't think Sanchez has played like a rookie this preseason. We disagree there. Our inability to see eye to eye means little, though. Geno will be our day 1 starter as Mark Sanchez threw 2-too many picks.
Sanchez was actually showing some improvement and who knows, might of had a high number of TD, low numbered INT if he was allowed to keep going. Just because his past shows ill doesnt mean he will always be ill. This offense with him in it showed some promise of positive nice gains and scoring. Those errors could of been cleaned up as the season went on.
Haha that'd be great if someone did this in the media. But, alas, I think even these hacks know that that would make them look like fucking idiots.
how dare you post something that is obvious, intelligent and rational. this thread is only for lunatics who freak out and run around screaming about how the sky is falling b/c a guy gets banged up a little bit.
Sanchez has turned the ball over every single game this preseason. Even after Geno was awful and Mark was handed the starting position Sanchez fumbles the snap. The guy simply can't protect the ball and can't be trusted as the starting QB. I don't want Sanchez starting a game at all, no point, we know what he'll do. Let Geno start, if he shows no progress then make him the backup and draft one of the QBs in 2014 class.
The last part is priceless, you first say that Geno's pre-season game shows he's not ready and then turn around and say pre-season stats means nothing. And on that latter point your right, they mean very little. But here are the facts, Sanchez has made some very bad decisions this pre-season, just rookie bad decisions and he's a 5th year NFL player. Smith made two bad mistakes in the game, one Pick that was more on the receiver than Smith and of course the running out of the back of the endzone which was in part a rookie mistake. But he had the right decision on the play, he rolled away from the defender to get outside the tackle and throw the ball away safely...he made the mistake of rounding the escape route too deep and wound up out of the Endzone. rookie mistake but he had made the right decision. Unlike Sanchez who two weeks earlier in a similar situation just kept falling backwards and heaved a lollypop to the line that was of course picked for 6. This is important, it's what keeps Sanchez from being an acceptable QB, poor judgment. Sanchez illustrated that same poor judgment two other times, but I've already addressed that.
I agree. A 5th year starter has to do more to separate himself from a rookie, and while I do think Sanchez will start I don't think he's looked great at all. Geno will eventually pull it all together once the game slows down for him, I don't see Sanchez ever pulling it together. It's been 5 years.
Obviously they knew that last night which is why they scheduled a MRI for today..if Cimini got any dumber he would have to watered.
Yes. This could have been a rebound year in this new offense. The WCO gave him a chance to be a downfield thrower.
NFL players, especially QB's, very rarely change their stripes after 4 years of being a starter and those that do usually do so on another team and after a couple years of being a backup somewhere....See Vinny Testaverde who really only had 2 or 3 decent seasons in a 20 year career. You seldom see QB's who have performed at a pretty consistent level change their level of play after 4 years as a starter. In 4 years He's been consistent, always around 55% completion rate, +/- the normal 1-2% variance per year in that stat. 3 of 4 years with 18 or more interceptions, and whats worse usually among the league leaders in dropped interceptions. Every year putting the ball on the ground 9+ times. Every year around an anemic mid 6 YPA. Every year save one less then 17 TD's. Every year among the leagues worst in 3 and out's. In fact, statistically he's the worst 4 consecutive year starter in the NFL when compared to his peers since 1950. Think about that for a moment, the worst QB compared to his contemporary peers to have started 4 consecutive seasons with the same team in 63 seasons of NFL Football. Just think about that for a little while, then tell me he'll get better. Although admittedly it would be hard for him to be worse.
Quite possibly feeding a developing QB the Kerley / Shonn Greene offensive threat package fits in there somewhere. Quite possibly...
If Garrard was here he would be starting and Muck wouldn't be here and the point would be mute, he has no future with this team, I'm not a Geno fan, I'm a Jet fan and we already know what Sanchez can't do...
