couldn't say, I only watched those 4 plays as they were posted on bleacherreports site so I just watched those 4 plays. But I wouldn't be surprised if he had somewhat happy feet, first start in an NFL pre-season game in front of the "home" crowd. he's a rookie, and as with all rookies (including Sanchez his rookie year) I don't grade on the most sever of scales. AKA I expect rookie mistakes and rookie jitters.
Agreed. What a bonehead decision! That's why you don't put in starting QBs in the end of preseason games. Every fan understands that, but Rex doesn't, apparently. You want to win the game?! This is preseason! It's meaningless. He'll be gone after this season He's not fit to be a head coach.
Rex is a joke. Should be fired this morning. And I have backed him through so much crap, but he doesn't know how to coach team. Doesn't even know how to run preseason games. Ridiculous.
I like Rex but that is the kind of decision that ends a coaching stint with a team. Let the Gruden/Cowher rumors start
if it happens, sanchez on i-r is one season-long headache avoided. sanchez may indeed have a future in the nfl, but it's not with the jets. i think that's a fair statement. now they are forced to face that when they didn't have the stones to just release him. unfortunate for mark, he has been a stand-up guy. but now, if he's gone for the year, he gets paid to get physically and mentally ready for another challenge. and the jets can forget about him and still say they 'gave him a shot'.
Rex's head is simply not focused on the entire game. He is a glorified defensive coach. Putting Sanchez in behind a straw hut offensive line was utter stupidity, Ryan needs to grab his clown nose and hit the road.
Smith made Rookie mistakes,, he threw some nice passes and had numerous dropped balls,, hes got a better arm than Sanchez and can run better than Sanchez...I say give him a shot...The Jets have to get a running game going, Ivory isn't looking so good,,That direct snap to Powell works well.
1. The "freak out" over this preseason is just unbelievable. The media (obnoxious, irresponsible journalists who have no interest whether this team does well, rather what kind of story will get a rise out of us all), the fans the hysteria never ceases to amaze me. My understanding was and has been for years, is that preseason is to evaluate players, and to implement a few generic, vanilla plays. PRESEASON HAS NO BEARING on the regular season, no more pleading for any explanation, arguing or trying to convince anyone of such. 2. Mark Sanchez/Geno Smith evaluation is just that, evaluation. From what little I have been able to observe ( no Jet Games to watch in Fl.) Geno is a rookie, just that, a rookie. He is not ready to take the reigns, and would be best to learn and be ready. Mark Sanchez is serviceable if not optimum, His injury last night will simply need to be PATIENTLY EVALUATED. It's not serious, until they release that information. If you want to freak out about it, than suit yourself. Last time I checked freaking out and worrying about information that hasn't been established yet, never changed or influenced that information. 3. Matt Simms/Greg Mcleroy. The two gents have talent and an upside, but aren't the "sexy pick to play". It's unfortunate, to say the least, that they have not had the same opportunity to make a SOLID case for their candidacy. C'mon, what the fuck! Do any of you guys really think that Sanchez or Geno are leading us to the promised land? It's A TEAM SPORT!! If any of us have refused to get dizzy on the wine, and believed that we were playoff contenders, than we understand that we are in rebuilding mode. I would love nothing more than to be successful, however, I will be just as understanding and satisfied if we are simply competitive, and show growth, cohesiveness, and gelling towards a brighter, more stable future for this franchise... I don't usually rant, or even post anything of significance. I KNOW there are many more factors that go into the discussion of our beloved JETS, but I thought I'd offer a concise view of where the fuck we are now... Love You Guys...
Any chance that Mark was in there because marty wanted to see more of him and Rex is just taking the heat for his OC?
What makes you think he is the starter? As bad as Smith was I don't think he has any more turnovers than Sanchez does this preseason and maybe even one less after that ridiculous fumble Sanchez had last night.
Mark Sanchez is a starting QB? You really still believe that? I think Rex put him in to give him another opportunity to prove that he's the Jets starting QB and once again he failed to do that.
I don't think MS is a starting NFL qb, I don't think Rex is HC material and I don't think Geno Smith is the Answer. Hopefully we can make this year somewhat bearable and Idzik can get rid of 2/3 of the problem and find a legitimate HC and QB.
Who got hurt now again? Brees, Rodgers, Peyton or some guy that looked like a back-up last season? I'm confused.
It's interesting, but it seems the non football writers are getting the situation better than the football writers: Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN 1h The criticism of Rex Ryan doesn't make sense: Wasn't somebody going to have to play behind 2nd-team OL? Would it be better if Geno got hurt? Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN 1h And yes,Sanchez was playing behind 2nd-team OL--but against backup defenders. Seems like classic 2nd guess. It's football: Players get hurt. Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN 1h I'm not saying Ryan is a good coach. But they're clearly not sold on Sanchez, either, so it's not like this is a prototypical QB situation. Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN 49m It's worth remembering, too: It's not like Sanchez has thrived or remained injury-free behind the No. 1 OL, either. The QB situation stinks.
A lot of questions will get answered this year and more questions will then present themselves. I believe that the primary thing that is wrong about Rex's head coaching style is that he exhibits the loyalty of a great head coach towards his favored players. The problem is that he hasn't proven that he is a great head coach and so he really does not have that coinage in the bank yet. When a Don Shula or a Chuck Noll begins to trend downwards because he cannot let go of his favored players in a timely manner the guy gets some slack cut because he's been to the wars and he get the benefit of the doubt on the personnel decisions. Then he gets either fired or retired at some point because sticking with "your" guys through thick and thin will eventually leave you in a situation where the field speaks louder than you do. If Rex wants to be a great head coach he needs to do what all great head coaches do and find the best talent to speak for him on the field. That means picking and weeding and throwing players who don't quite make the grade over his shoulder until he finds the best options. Right now Rex should be wanting to force feed Geno until he knows whether he's the guy. Every other QB on the roster is a throw over your shoulder and keep looking type guy. Geno may well be also but until you commit to finding that out you just don't know.
Agreed there is no reason to freak out over a pre season game and the media always hypes up every story to make us look bad. The media's coverage on this I can't disagree with though. You do not put a potential starting qb behind a third string offensive line. Rex should be fired for a decision like that, but that can't be done right now. This decision will be evaluated at the end of the season.
and the sanity of a baseball expert shines through to illuminate the football frenzy, agree with everything Olney said.
I am huge Rex Ryan fan but that was huge blunder unless the starting QB has already been picked and his name is not Sanchez.
