I can't get behind it, Geno showed that while he has some potential he is not ready to be a starter in the NFL. At that point you know Mark is your #1 week one. Maybe if only for a week or two but still your starter. You absolutely can't throw him out there behind 2nd and 3rd teamers regardless if he needs to "win" the competition. He won when Geno threw 3 INT's two of them brutal. Maybe the reciever should have done more on the first but the ball was still behind him. In throwing Mark back out there you took a giant risk and it wasn't worth the reward. Once Geno lost the job it should have been down to who survives as the 3rd QB. I know you know the game as well as anyone here so I don't mean to make it soudn like I'm going after you but I just didn't see the benefit to having Mark play behind 2nd and 3rd teamers.
What was RR thinking? Why even put Sanchez in with the backups? Mind boggling, I'm a huge RR supporter but he may have sealed his fate with that decision if Mark is seriously hurt. Geno will not get him enough wins to save his job. Yikes.
http://espn.go.com/newyork/video/clip?id=9598252 Nice of Rex to finally fire back at those morons in the media.   Still a bonehead move to put Buttfumble back out there in the 4th without the 1st team O-Line there to protect him....
Best part is I GUARANTEE that if Sanchez did not play at all, the media will hound Rex for asking why he did not play in the game and will try and get Rex to commit to Geno being the QB. He would not win either way. I don't blame him for anything he did in regards to Sanchez today....the only thing I would have done differently is take Geno out after the Powell TD and let him leave on a high note and then have Sanchez finish quarter 3 and let Simms get quarter 4 all to himself.
Good points. But Rex didn't heed your advice and now he's botched this much hyped QB completion. He's once again shown why he's just not a head coach.
Yes, the way to stick it to the media is to act like an immature brat..., The way you stick it to anyone in sports is to WIN. That is how you get people to shut it down and make them respect you. This latest move by Rex will just add to his blooper reel after he's fired in week 17 and ESPN does a "Best of Rex sound bites" feature.
No, the objective is to win football games that matter. If it was just to win games, the starters would play every minute of every preseason games.
I like Rex and I believed all off season that Sanchez was the best option to start week 1. The first half yesterday showed that sanchez should be the starter and Rex could have made his life very easy by having Mark play the 3rd quarter or just keep him on the bench and let him play a couple of series next week. The press would have had no issue with Smith imploding - especially after he showed horrible judgement and ran out of the end one -- that was laughable. By playing Mark with 3rd srting OL against a bunch of guys trying to male highlight reel plays so some other team picks them up when hey get cut in 5 days was moronic. If Sanchez can't go and you start Geno Smith week 1 i don't think Rex makes it through the season. Not what Woody is looking for the year the Super Bowl is held in NY...one of the tenants of the stadium going 0-16 -- and that is what the will go with Geno Smith.
I don't think Sanchez should have been in the game at that point but that's because Geno clearly didn't look ready to start and by default that should have crowned Sanchez the starter IMO. I don't see how it wasn't fair competition putting him in there. Geno faced the 2's and 3's and now so did Sanchez. If you want to have a fair competition you should put them both in the same situations, no? Apparently they hadn't decided Sanchez was starting at that point and so they finished the fair competition. And then what does Sanchez do but treat us to another stupid ass turnover.
As for Mark's turnover I think in that situation you have a QB that never expected to be in the game, playing behind a make shift OL, and he knows he isn't going to get protection. He was probably in the mindset of don't get your self killed....still happened. I do agree if this team has to play smith and Sanchez is indeed out for the season Rex doesn't make it through the season. Just a horrible decision and someone should tell him playing to win preseason games is not the objective. The objective is to keep your starters and key reserves healthy and evaluate the back end of your roster.
There's no excuses for Sanchez anymore, especially the ridiculous turnovers he seems to commit EVERY GAME. The snap hit him in the hands.
The guy has had the better pre-season...had put points on the board each game, the running game looked good with him behind center, he is getting all receivers involved, and appears to have a very good understanding of the offense. A fumbled snap with a 3rd string center doesn't bother me when he obviously wasn't told he was going into the game until 30 seconds before that drive started.
I am a realist -- will Sanchez turn the ball over - yes - but he has the potential and has shown the ability to put points on the board, lead the offense, and play in pressure situations,. He has put up 37 points in this offense - 65% completion -- 2 TD 2 INT ---- I can live with that. He is the best option week 1 without any hesitation. Geno Smith is no where close to being an NFL QB and can you imagine if Matt Simms comes out next Thursday and lights up the Eagles? With Sanchez hurt and Smith not ready for primetime the press will have a field day.
Did he fumble yes -- i am concerned that it happened with a 3rd string center, an swiss cheese offensive line, and after sitting on the bench for 2.5 hours with no intention of playing until the commercial break between series was over? No If you look at the body of work this pre seaosn Sanchez has shown a good grasp of the offense, shown he can be successful with the offense, has the potential to have his best season I feel. Is already completing over 65% of his passes and has a good chemistry with all his receivers. Even the running game is strong behind him because he is throwing the ball 10+ yards and can use play action effectively.
