The simple fact of the matter is that Sanchez has no future on this team. Its one thing to make rookie mistakes as a rookie, to make rookie mistakes as a 5th year player is unacceptable. If you're going to have a 5th year QB that mistakes rookie mistakes, then get rid him and start anyone else - Smith, Mcelroy, Simms. Furthermore, Sanchez seems to be incapable of throwing a screen pass that results in anything but a pick 6 or an incompletion. This makes him a very bad fit for an MM offense. The best thing for the jets is for them to cut sanchez and have smith, mcelroy and simms as your QBs. None of them can possibly be worse than sanchez was last year. And for people to say Rex shouldn't have been playing him in the 4th quarter behind a 3rd string OL, I'd say that Sanchez is not Manning (any of them), Brady, Rogers, Brees or anybody else who's irreplaceable. Why shouldn't he play in the 4th quarter behind that OL? Sanchez can't seem to go a game without a terrible turnover - pick 6, end zone interception or a fumble and he didn't disappoint tonight. Even tonight with Smith's turnovers, only one was a bad decision - two were bad throws to open receivers. At least Smith is making the right reads. I wish I could say that about Sanchez, but I can't and he seems to routinely throw into double or triple coverage. As for stepping on the end line of the end zone - another Smith rookie mistake, but no worse than sanchez having 6 seconds in field goal range and holding on to the ball as time ran out. Basically, I think at this point, Sanchez and Smith are pretty much even, but with Smith you at least have the hope that he'll learn from his mistakes.
McElroy! McElroy! McElroy! I love Rex but this decision makes me wonder if he knows how to run a football team.
Sanchez was a part of a quarterback competition. At this point in his career, after two "brutal" seasons, he is not above playing with second teamers. The Bronco's let Peyton Manning throw 34 passes tonight, in a pre-season game. Players play in the preseason, studs and duds - injuries happen.
5/6 good, fumble on a good snap, bad. I'll remind you Geno looked good against the Giants 2nd teamers in the 3rd quarter to. all Sanchez needed to do was not make a Sanchez styled mistake.
Pick six on a screen pass, red zone int, brainfart on goal line running out the half, fumble on a perfect snap
I assume you mean Sanchez? First game - pick 6 (on a botched screen play no less). Second game - end zone interception throw into double coverage & letting time run out at the half in field goal range by holding on to the ball. Third game - limited snaps but not being able to hold on to a decent shot gun snap (probably because he wasn't looking at the ball). Which one of these is not a rookie mistake?
This guy is a mess. I agree... the interesting thing is that everyone on this board, sans a few renegades, talk with certainty that ANYONE could do better in the exact same situation. "The worst QB to ever play". Experiment one: Geno Smith, 4 turnovers. Here come the excuses, though. Fitting for this fan base.
I don't want Sanchez hurt and he is our best option at QB. That said, this isn't like 2010 or even 2009. We aren't a playoff contender. Idzik knows it, Woody knows it, Rex knows it. This team is at best 6-10 with Sanchez, maybe even 5-11 or 4-12. With Geno, we could be 2-14 up to maybe 4-12. We lost Revis, our defense looks average at best, our line is nothing like 2008-10, our WR's are a joke, and the WR's look stellar compared to the RB's. Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Aaron Rogers, or Colin Kapernick MIGHT be able to get this team to 8-8.
And here I thought I was going to have to respond...I have a whole cadre of people to do it WITH me! Sanchez failed because he was playing against 3rd team players and STILL tossed in a customary fumble. Geno just put on a fantastic display of "not ready" for prime time. I don't say get rid of him but he needs to observe. I will say this again...Matt Simms looked READY to play. I don't know how much more I can say this. He looked ready.
well it doesnt matter at this point. Sanchez appears to be hurt. If not for months, he'll probably be ruled out for the first game.
