Did you guys hear how Rex announced Geno was starting? It sounded like in pained him to say it. Sounded like he was not happy about it and it was forced upon him. If that is true, I am not sure how any of this can work. The team needs to be on the same page from top to bottom.
I am not saying they set him up to fail, I am saying the same thing I have said for months. The job as Geno's to lose, all he had to do was show he was ready to play and he was starting no matter how good/bad mark was. Geno has a couple of poor drives in a preseason game while Mark has moved the team up and down the field(w/ a couple of bad mistakes thrown in). Cowher said mark should start, they asked Bart Scott the other day and he said mark. To a neutral observer watching the 2 in camp/preseason it would easily be Mark. Again, I am not knocking Geno. I think it may be good for him to sit early and then "come to the rescue" rather than start and we struggle then our fanbase is bashing him and wanting to draft another QB in April.
It definitely doesn't sound like someone along for the ride . . . but we have very different interpretations of what it ultimately means. When I hear that an offense failed to score a touchdown (while scoring less than ten points) in four of a team's five losses (three of which, were very close, competitive games), I immediately conclude that even a marginally better, more prolific offense would have resulted in that team winning several of those games, and thus, achieving a significantly better record than they did. And quite tellingly, this statement jives perfectly with the feeling that I got when watching that team play. I always thought they were a consistent passing game away from being a dominant team. Sanchez showed flashes of brilliance that season, but he was always marred by inconsistency. His overall production was mediocre, characterized by equally tremendous highs and lows.
Cowher has said a lot of stupid things during his career as a broadcaster, and he was the moron responsible for sticking with Kordell Stewart for almost 5 years. Bart is Rex's guy. Sanchez should be a light year ahead of Geno at this point, junc.
We've barely seen Geno play. As a result, I'm not sure how confident we can be in any definitive statement regarding the relative performances of the two quarterbacks. I mean, Geno Smith was 6-7 for 40+ yards. The two drives went nowhere, but they were both marred by conservative play-calling. Again, we've only seen the guy throw the ball 7 times in a "real" (I'm being kind to the Preseason, here) game. The only statement I can make regarding Geno is that he obviously has some physical talent, but I simply have no idea what kind of NFL quarterback he is, or will be in the near future. I just want to see him play.
why? mark was a beaten down player last year, he's in his 3rd system in 3 years, why should he be light years ahead? To be fair his "competition" was w/ Kellen Clemens and that may have been rigged but he earned the job w/ his play on the field the first few years.
Durability counts, right? I didn't say anything negative about geno but please don't cite 6-7 for 40+ yds. He led the O to ONE 1st down in 3+ possessions. I want to see him play too, I hope he's great Saturday and in the reg season. regardless of who starts the season geno is going to play at some point and I hope he's great.
I agree Sanchez should start and once he falters Geno can come in and the Sanchez era can end for good. If Geno shows promise the team can move forward if not Sanchez is cut and they can draft another QB in April next year. It would suck to have to pick another QB but it would be a necessary evil. If that is the case I hope the trade up to get the #1 guy if he is the real deal.
here are the positive scenarios regarding our QB situation: 1. Mark wins job, has big season and never looks back. We can trade Geno in a year or 2 for picks. 2. Geno has a great game tomorrow, wins job and is ready to play day 1 and has a good rookie year leading us into playoff contention. we release mark after the season. 3. Mark starts, falters then Geno comes in and takes off from there. we release Mark after the season. any of those happen we should all be thrilled.
1) As to the bolded, why not? I provided the proper context by pointing out that neither drive went anywhere. The fact is that he was accurate and competent in the 7 throws that he did make. And I'll reiterate, the play-calling was very conservative. They were clearly planning on playing him several more series, and the injury really threw them for a loop. 2) The number of plays we have seen from him has been infuriatingly low due to his injury. I can't quite worry about the "durability" of his first three possessions of his NFL career.
he didn't make one difficult throw, mark was 10-13 or something like that. We can't judge based on #s. he got hurt, he didn't play last week. if he's not able to play how can we evaluate and start him?
I was at the Bills game...and a competent quarterback probably wins that game by 3 touchdowns. To say the passing game carried the team that day is dishonest. Sanchez was horribly inaccurate that game. Completed under 50% of his throws for 180 yards and had at least one dropped interception. This against a horrendous Bills defense that ended up surrendering 30 TD passes that season. Also, remember that a Sanchez pick set up a short Bills td drive and a muff by Cromartie on a punt set up another. Conversely, the Bills handed the Jets the ball on the Buffalo 36 after the taunting penalty and misplayed squib kick before the half. The Jets also ran the ball pretty well that day. I also don't believe a Bills pass rusher sniffed Sanchez the entire afternoon. I give him credit for putting together at the end against that awful defense...but to say the passing game carried the team just isn't true. The passing game is a big reason why the Jets put themselves in jeopardy of losing that game.
This is the story of the Jets since Sanchez has been here. I don't how anybody can defend him at this point.
Fifth year in the NFL Familiarity with WCO Ability to take snaps from under center Familiarity with personnel 4 road playoff wins There are just some excuses that don't work when you're talking about a QB comp against a 2nd round rookie.
No one was judging anything based solely on numbers. I was just pointing out that he looked reasonably accurate with the marginal throws that he was afforded the opportunity to make. We need to see more of him. Actually, in an ideal world, we'd see more of Sanchez, as well. I agree. We need to see more of him. I'm really looking forward to tomorrow night. But again, I don't see how any of us can be making definitive statements about which of the two quarterbacks deserves to start, because we've barely seen one of them play.
I agree. And the thing that no one can any longer excuse with Sanchez is the game-changing mistakes. As long as he continues to recklessly turn the ball over in critical situations, people are going to have a hard time believing that there is a solid reason to not play Smith.
