It really is not about Revis, it is about Tom Brady and the New England Offense. They spread the ball around too much so Revis's value is lessened. If there was no Tom Brady, things would have probably been a lot different.
I dont think you can look at it as "if he does or doesnt return to his usual form, was it a good move?" Basically, it was the only choice we had. Its that simple. It was either trade him, or pay him a ridiculous amount. Whether Dee/Richardson work out or not, it was the right move because it was the only move.
Dumping Revis rather than have him sit out for another 10 weeks or more was the best decision the Jets have made in years and I don't care what form he returns to, we were never going to pay him what he wants and after this year I will be surprised if Tampa doesn't cut him too.
I was about to post this. I agree. It was not really a choice come 2013. Maybe something could have been done before that, but there were no other options this year.
Getting Revis was a great move, the impact he made did not reflect 16 million. If im paying 16 million I expect a complete game breaker. Revis was worth 10-12.
I put all the blame, squarely, on Holmes inflated contract. If we didn't sign that piece of trash to the Big, guaranteed, front loaded deal we would have had room to work on Revis. This year, '13, would have been a contract year for Revis and he would have been pushing hard to get healthy and impress. Holmes is not Captain, but Revis fits the bill nicely; a major leader on the field that plays to the whistle on every down. Holmes on the other hand fucking b-lows. Tanny Sucks too.
You didn't mention the vastly inflated contract we gave Sanchez at the same time. Or Harris for that matter..a LB that makes more than anybody else on the team.
I said "Tanny sucks too" you're right though. There are a few contracts I think were massively overblown. Wayne Hunter says "Hi." Did I mention Tanny sucks a Big fat one??
If Revis is close to healthy you cannot replace a player like that with equal value. It will be a deal we will lose on. Having Revis allows the Jets to play with 12 men on the field. He covers the other teams best receiver all game better than 2 other players can. He eliminates a guy like Calvin Johnson form the game. He allows Rex to manufacture a rush with all kinds of exotic blitzes. You can never replace him or get equal value. All that being said what was the alternative? Pay him 16.2 million, watch him walk or dump him for low value. 16.2 million is arguably to much for any non elite QB. Trading him given the circumstances was reasonable even if we do not get anything close to equal value. The problem to me is not trading Revis but what was done to bring about the situation. In 2007 we poisoned the waters with unreasonable demands when we tried to change the rules of the game for a 14th pick. We asked for an extra year and we eventually had to given giving him a 4 year deal with a 2 year option at a price that was so high it was doubtful the Jets would ever exercise it. The problem he was so good those last two years were a bargain. Revis never got over the way he was treated and wanted to renegotiate after 3 years as he always thought of the deal as a 4 year deal. He has made the Jets pay for their greed in 2007 ever since. This brings us to mistake number 2. The renegotiation was a terrible deal for the Jets. Tanny admitted right after the deal was done that he hated the deal and it was a terrible deal because it did not allow the Jets to restrict Revis after his contract ended. The question is if he knew it was bad deal why did he do it. We all know because Rex and Woody bullied him and made him do the deal. That is the problem he should have put his foot down. He let the same thing happen with Mangini and Ghoulston. While I consider Revis the best player ever to play for the Jets and a top 10 NFL player I have no problem trading Revis. But I do have a problem with how we got greedy with Revis in 2007 and how that poisoned the negotiations ever since and I do have a problem with giving in to Revis in 2010 giving him the bad deal that gave him all the leverage for the trade.
The move had to be made. A lot of reasons, none of which were completely determinative in themselves but all of which collectively made the trade a no-brainer. John Idzik got good value for him given all the variables in play. One team bidding for an injured player going post-prime soon and he got two draft picks including a 1st. That's a great deal. To those saying Revis is not injury-prone based on his two injuries: you're right. But he's going to be 30 soon and all NFL players are injury-prone at 30.
That situation with Tampa is very strange, mainly because of the contract. 96mil, but no guaranteed money. Tampa can trade the guy to the highest bidder at any time with no repercussions aside from the lack of Revis. Our cut him in a minute if he ends up hobbled by his previous ACL injury.
Next season? The Cowboys just signed Sean Lee to a 6 year extension and he was drafted the season before.
You'll really be rooting for him against the Jets? How can anyone ever take you seriously as a Jets fan?
Revis wont last in TB the window for them is 3 years at most. Revis will likely be cut in 2-3 years which would justify the first rounder they gave up. No chance he plays out the whole contract.
