No he doesn't because I don't believe in benefit of the doubt in the NFL. The FO failed at getting talent around him but Sanchez hasn't done anything to make the non talented guys around him better either the way great QB's do. That being said he should be the starting QB because I don't see Geno being the better QB (yet) time will tell if he gets there one day. So the way I see it there isn't much difference between Geno and Mark and the risk you run with rushing Geno into the role is he will also be playing with the same talent as Mark so you risk him losing confidence and failing.
This thread has some of the dumbest posts I have ever read on TGG. The competition was/is not rigged. Everybody in the FO and the CS has an agenda - to put the best team on the field and to win games. Smith is not Idzik's "prize" or "pet." He was a second round draft pick that fell the the Jets in a year when drafting a young QB made sense. The 39th pick in the draft does not make or break a GM nor does it mean Idzik is tied to Smith for any period of time. If Sanchez wins the starting job, it is not necessarily a bad thing. If he plays well and the Jets win games, then the team was right to show continued faith in him and we can blame personnel and past OCs. If he doesn't play well, the potential QB of the future is on the bench rather than some 40 year old has been, a player without the physical talent and pocket presence to be anything more than a back up in the NFL (McElroy), or a player who has no business playing QB at all (Tebow). Big difference from last year. Can we let the season play out before we decree any coach or player a failure? We all know (at least I hope so) that Sanchez is on a very short leash this year and will be pulled without hesitation if he repeats last year's dismal performance or continues to have brain farts like last week's pick six. We all need to take the long view here and realize this is a rebuilding year and the playoffs are a long shot. This roster needs to be rebuilt and Idzik was only able to do a partial job. Next year is the key. If Sanchez starts to hold the fort while Smith refines his game for NFL, we all should be able to live with that. Any Jets fan expecting more than 8 wins and who would be unhappy with 6 wins if the team shows improvement over last year in certain areas is crazy and ignorant.

LOL @ TonyMac's response, that's hilarious! I felt the same way reading your post. The last part made me cringe a little because I honestly don't know if I can stomach watching Mark Sanchez take another snap for the NY Jets, but otherwise, good stuff!
I know Sanchez is dumb, but does anyone think he would have blown off a pick 6 with his "Who cares?" comment if he thought he was in a death struggle with Geno? Or is it more likely that Rex led him to believe the fix was in?
Sanchez has always responded like that regarding a poor play or game. It's annoying as a fan because it seems like he doesn't cares, but it's probably the best way to try and stay even and put the mistake in the past and don't let it negatively affect him down the road.
Come Jacksonville's scrimmage I'd like to see Sanchez repeat his down field passing performance as he did against Detroit, minus the mistakes on his two screen passes. None of us can predict the future so who truthfully knows what Sanchez can actually do with an experienced offensive coordinator combined with some offensive continuity (player wise) from the season before? Those aspects surrounding Mark's career have yet to be seen. It's always been high turnover alongside inexperienced OC's in Shotty and Sparano. Heading into his 5th season Sanchez is finally quarterbacking under an experienced coordinator. As an offensive unit we're also returning with some overall chemistry amongst Mark's teammates (or at least a little more team continuity when compared to previous season) with the likes of Kerley, Edwards, Holmes (upon his return) along with Stephen Hill from last year (as far as WR's go). Same goes for returning younger backs such as Powell and hopefully McKnight coming out of the backfield (from time to time). Cumberland hopefully stays healthy as a pass catching TE prospect this time around because Cumberland is a TE who Sanchez has gained experience with over the years. So this creates for 7 (potential) players on our current roster in which were here last season. This hasn't been the case more times than not during his first 4 seasons. I like to believe that additions such as Ivory, Goodson and Winslow Jr. should all help contribute and/or provide Sanchez with options down field. Especially Winslow Jr. could have a big season. Keller was truthfully Sanchez' favorite target, so if Winslow Jr. can not only fill Keller's shoes but also bring his own aggressive style down the middle of the field... Winslow Jr. is a player I like when talking about up coming statistical numbers. TE's can provide most QB's with a security blanket. A QB's best friend lots of the time. Would also enjoy seeing Geno Smith A.) continue his development and hopefully finish with yet another solid QB rating. B.) His accuracy and completion percentage (small sample size or not) was a positive sign last weekend. Would like for his completion percentage to stay above 60%. C.) Come out confident and eager to learn from his mistakes while responding well after his first practice in which he threw multiple INT's along with last but not least D.) Given more of an opportunity (from our coaching staff) to throw down field. To attack the football field. Showing off his quarterback attributes mistakes or not (it's the preseason). Regardless of who our quarterback is I'd like to see one of either Sanchez or Geno surrounded by actual weapons in Ivory as our featured back, both of Stephen Hill and Braylon Edwards on the outside, Jeremy Kerley working the slot while also utilizing our two pass catching TE's in Winslow Jr. and Cumberland. To give us a chance to see our surrounding players perform alongside our QB's. All of this behind our first experienced offensive coordinator in quite some time. It all starts up front with the offensive line. That's a given. But it's hard not to get a little amped up about both of Sanchez and Geno when we're featuring so many talented players at skilled positions. Lots of young kids too which makes it exciting. Having three outside WR's once Holmes returns in Hill, Edwards and Holmes could be a nice problem to have. Especially with an offensive coordinator who utilizes his WR's ability. Hill is a raw project with phenom attributes size/strength and speed wise. The more I think about it the more I like the idea of Hill and Edwards being our two physical outside WR's who can also run block with both of Kerley and Holmes working the slot(s). Then you factor in the likes of Ivory and Powell along with potentially McKnight and maybe even Goodson to along with pass catching TE's in Winslow Jr. and Cumberland and all of a sudden, our Jets offense is playing football with QB's in which can toss the ball around. If our offensive line can return to AFC Championship form along with a healthy unit, this Jets offense will put up points with an X's and O's type of coordinator. Whoever lines up under Center out of Geno and Sanchez has my full support and hope.
Certainly looks as though the qb competition is over. Headband starts this week against the Jags and I don't see how Geno makes up ground by playing against the Giants in week 3. Unless his ankle is better, I don't see the sense in playing Geno against the Giants at all. Perhaps let him play the last game of the preseason season, then give him a clipboard and a ballcap and a spot on the sidelines next to MM.
The jets are a bad team. Until people stop living in fantasy land and look at this team for what it is, they will be continually disappointed with the inevitable result. Mark Sanchez sucks, the oline is no longer a strength and the overall talent on our offense is probably bottom five in the league etc... I don't understand why some fans feel the need to bullshit themselves about the current state of the jets. Without a run game we might get the #1 pick next yr. If peterman's play is indicative of things to come then I'd rather have Sanchez behind center getting mauled. IMO the fact that geno has made this competition a tough decision is condemning to Sanchez who's entering his fifth yr. Our beloved Sanchez can't even distance himself from a green rook who has serious upside but lacks polish. Hill has suspect hands, Edwards is in serious decline the last few yrs and Holmes is a cancer. Kerley and Winslow aren't carrying this team. Rex and the front office have neglected the offense. My complaint with Rex is that if he were such a defensive genius shouldn't he be able to coach up some later round picks instead of using every 1st rounder on d? Belichek focuses on not giving up points, particularly red zone d and while he has Brady he also supports him with talent. The pats stack the o and get more out of less on d, something rex should be able to do.Rex Wants to align himself with the d while his o Has struggled partly due to decisions he has made. Always quick to point out his defenses ranking yet how bout that pathetic o Rex? I don't want to see Rex fired I just want to see personnel decisions taken away because his judgement has proven lacking. We need to lose, we need talent that only comes by way of the draft. That is the unfortunate result from a mismanaged team and a short sighted coach with to much sway.
You better pray that the Jets completely flake out this year..you don't give the slightest GLIMMER of hope in terms of things coming together, players further developing & people stepping up. The Jets surprise this year you will be eating some major humble pie.
I agree that this roster still has holes in it, but "we need to lose?" I don't like that thinking. Good teams don't go in the tank just to get to the front of the line each round. Drafts can build rosters because talent and value are not limited to the top 5 slots of each round. It's more about not throwing your picks away which kills your depth and overall talent (see: Tannenbaum).
I disagree with you a lot here. He won't make up any more ground sitting on the sidelines but more importantly he doesn't gain any NFL experience that way. If and when Sanchez starts the regular season we would then miss out on the opportunity to get Geno some experience in live action.
Personally i think if Sanchez shits the bed vs Jags and Geno and put together some solid drives vs a Giants defense its very possiable this could put geno in the lead. No one is impressed by the jags defense putting together a good ganme vs jags and giants are two very different performances.
This isn't about Geno gaining experience. This is about who gives the Jets the best chance to win NOW, not down the road. If this was about the future, there wouldn't have been a "competition" in the first place. Although Headband sucks, Geno didn't beat him out and now, thanks to the injury, Geno won't have the opportunity until Headband shits the bed again. It may come sooner than later given our early schedule, but frankly I'm happy Geno doesn't get smashed by playoff bound teams. Let Headband carry the load into the second half of the season. If the Jets are out of it, yeah, play Geno against the bottomfeeders and let him learn that way.
This is how I feel. If Sanchez surprises us, all the better, but until the O-line and Running game is shown to be even adequate, why throw the guy who may be the future to the wolves right away...... Either Sanchez surprises everyone aside from junc and Hobbes, or we see Geno take over at the bye-week.
