During the draft we select 2 defenders and the media says Rex has all the power, Idzik is a puppet GM Then at camp Idzik comes out and says he'll have a role in the QB decision and now Rex has no power and is a lame duck
Just bumping this thread. I went to Maryland over the weekend and I learned what it's like to have real sports analysts that actually talk about football. On BSPN radio they gave the Jets preseason game a total of 15 minutes and only talked about QBs. No real calls from fans, nothing. So on my way down to MD I turned on the Philly station "Fanatic" and they spent well over an hour talking about the first Eagles PS game. They discussed numerous positions, and had a large amount of time dedicated to how the defense was playing. They had tons of fans calling in giving their 2 cents on various positions and players in them. I was blown away. I was thinking to myself, "Damn! So this is what real sports radio is like". As I got further south I put on a Baltimore station (can't remember the name) and they were talking about the Ravens. It was much more similar to the analysis above. They actually spent time on breaking down talent in various positions, rather than briefly mention the QBs and call it a day. And they actually took more than 1 or 2 calls. It really is night and day with media coverage in NY vs other places, even big markets like Philly. I want better coverage of my teams, damnit! Why are you guys so afraid of letting more fans call in and speak about the positions? BSPN radio takes 2-3 calls max in an hour and they pre screen them to only pick the ones talking about QB and what THEY want to talk about. Obviously that's a primary reason why they don't take many calls. They know people who actually care about football are going to call them out. They are a bunch of ego maniacs who think they know more than the fans who watch every single game and just don't want people calling so they can rant and rave and talk about A-roid for hours about the same crap over and over and over. NY media sucks!
Great post above. I was at the Packer pre-season game Friday night and driving out of the stadium I popped on the post game show and it was exactly how you described above. Hosts analyzing positional battles and knowledgable callers who watched the game and talking about the secondary, the RT position, the O-line shuffles, the battle for starting RB, how backup QB Harrell is developing (or not) and on and on it went. A little bit on the homer, cheerleader side but for the most part fair, accurate and most of all interesting. Pre-game show host outside the stadium before the game did a roundtable on their division opponents as well. NY media certainly does suck for the hardcore dig deep fans.
As much as i like the Yankees, I can't stand the Arod/Steroids talk. I couldn't 5 yrs ago with the Mitchell report and it irks me to no end. Arod? Steroids? STOP THE PRESSES! NY media can be a tough listen. And the callers that are so deeply effected by the current state of baseball are equally as disturbed. I can't stand Carton either, get rid of that bum.
I live in South Jersey and listen to the Fanatic all the time. It is great, even though I'm not an Eagles fan.
Im my Eyes and a few other posters we always viewed the media as the big top circus in town. They use the papers to sell the JETS as Clowns but they are the real clowns with their non factual reporting, asinine tweets and non sourced material. Just a bunch of absolute spineless fukClowns.
not really - i listen to wfan and espn all the time, in 09/10 they didn't extensively cover the jets as the other poster stated. jets got more coverage after they acquired tebow. its always about what the hosts want to talk about.
In New York there's a lot more sports and teams to talk about, with the listening audience wanting to hear about many teams and many topics so it's not like these other cities where everyone pretty much roots for the same team and wants to discuss one team. However, it is true that our team has been labeled as the clowns, and the media coverage and headlines play that up to sell papers and get attention. Unfortunately we've brought that on ourselves, and the way to change it can only happen on the field. The good thing is, it can change fast.
Seems to me when the Jets were on the rise, they did get a lot more favorable coverage than after the implosion. This town, and its tabloids, loves a winner and every now and than, they'll love a loser IF that loser is entertaining. (Mets). Once the entertainment value goes, all you're left with is the product and if that stinks, what else is there to report on?
There's so much product to sell in NY for the sports media. That's the problem. They'll always go with the hot team because that sells. Then if nobody is hot at the moment they'll start looking for other stuff that they can entertain with and sell in the process. Right now in the absence of a great team story the pecking order for selling in NY for the sports media is: 1. Yankees, as the most prominent franchise in town. 2. Jets suck/circus as the franchise most likely to draw a crowd of gawkers with negative coverage. 3. Everything else depending on what is going on at the moment. This explains Mike Francesa's continuing influence and ability to sell. He understands that the two items above will sell over everything else unless there's a momentary event that eclipses the norm.
I don't think the Jets organization is a joke, but I do believe that the media's arrogance as well as informative reporting is. They serve no purpose except to incite. They treat us as if we are stupid as and I'm tired of there WWE style of commentary. I think about what Harry Carson said to Stephen Smith about how the NFL is more entertainment than sport now, and I believe we can see it everywhere. It was certainly on display with the Arod situation with reporters keeping tabs on how many people would boo him. That's not baseball. That's WWE or Roman games.
The media will twist and turn things to give them a headline and a story to match, it's funny watching them try so hard to give the Jets a bad name, and the Jets are slowly giving them nothing in response, slowly making them look like the clowns.
