I'm not worried about our QB situation

Good because it's a passing league I guess we will start to fit in. I think our O will be 10x better because of how bad last year was. No sparano = 2-4 w's

 

This is where I'm at too. Sanchez is prone to interceptions. It is what it is. But there have been plenty of good QBs who had int habits.Vinny Testaverde, Brett Favre & Fran Tarkenton come to mind. It's still about minimizing those habits & making plays downfield.For the first time in AWHILE we saw a 1st string offense with some downfield ability. The running game can be worked on as the OLine continues to gel & key players step back into their roles. I was encouraged about the passing game as a whole.

 

We have already improved by getting two TDs in the preseason. Lmfao.

It was good to see the WRs and TEs get separation and YAC. I think Kerley will be a beast.

 

Our receiving corp is better than given credit. Hill and Kerley are the future, but I'm also intrigued by Spadola and Rogers. Both guys HAVE to make the team. IMO between the young guys Hill and Kerley and Gates, the rookies Rogers and Spadola and the vets Braylon, Holmes and Obomanu we are deep.

The running game looks to be more worrisome for now.

If you look about 50 seconds into this video, you'll see the play where Sanchez hooks up with Jeremy Kerley. You can see the pre-snap motion and the route running that was designed for Kerley to catch the ball. The secondary never had a chance to cover it. This is precisely why a good coordinator is absolutely vital to a QB's success. I think with Morningwheg we can get the best out of Sanchez/Geno.

 

I'm worried about the QB situation from several different perspectives.

First, Sanchez really is not a good QB. He looked good at times last night but he has looked good at times in each of his 4 seasons. He's also continually made bad decisions followed by bad throws and he did that at least twice last night. Going with him this year is like 10% upside, 40% more of the same and 50% nightmare in my opinion.

Second, Geno Smith is raw and he's still getting used to the speed of the NFL. I can't say with any certainty that putting him out there at the start of the year is the right thing to do, based on what we've seen from him in the spring, in camp and last night.

The Lions pass defense is bad. They were ranked 14th last year in yards allowed but 24th in opposing completion percentage and QB Rating. Watching Sanchez and Geno complete passes against their second string tells us next to nothing about their chances against a solid pass defense.

Third, McElroy is just good enough to cause a minor QB controversy and not remotely good enough to do anything with the starts if he got them.

Lastly, Rex is a complete x-factor here. We have no idea how he is going to parse all of the stuff he sees from the QB's in camp and his remark that he somehow was not watching the field on the Jets first drive is a bit troubling.

This could be a train wreck of a season by mid-season if the Jets mismanage the QB competition. Each of the QB's has a few losses in him this year that will be just on him. The trick to avoiding a really bad season is not to let Sanchez lose a few games he shouldn't followed by Geno losing a few games he shouldn't and then somehow having McElroy come into the mix and lose a few games he shouldn't.

That's the best argument for starting the season with Geno if you think he's remotely ready. He'll lose some games early on because that's what rookie QB's tend to do but then he should have most of those out of his system and that will give Rex's defense and Marty M a real chance to put some upside in the back half of the schedule.

Yes, but as you proceeded to hint at, Mark hasn't shown anywhere near the consistent ability to the make the significant plays down the field that those guys made. You can put up with some turnovers from your quarterback IF he is making up for those mistakes with a plethora of TD passes and momentous plays down the field. To put it mildly, Mark's career leaves a lot to be desired in this department. To date, Mark's career turnovers (interceptions + fumbles) outnumber his total career touchdowns (TD passes + TD rushes). This is a clear and unmistakable sign of a bad quarterback.

Mark has amassed 69 interceptions and 20 lost fumbles (out of 43 - WOW!) over the course of his 4 year career, for an astounding 89 career turnovers.

Meanwhile, he has thrown 68 TD passes and rushed for 12, for a grand total of 80 career TDs.

Finally, Mark has only managed to average a measly 6.476 yards/attempt.

In essence, Mark has shown no consistent ability, whatsoever, to make the plays necessary to atone for his numerous, game-changing mistakes.

Edit: Also, Vinny Testaverde does not deserve to be mentioned along side Brett Favre or Fran Tarkenton.

when you hope a rookie with a tweaked ankle can win the job as the best case scenario, there is reason to be concerned. Geno is going to be a little rough while he grows into the NFL. although i do like the potential.

Sanchez will continue to make disasterous mistakes over and over again, and at this point should not be starting any games we intend to win (which is all of them).

 

Its not all about the QB, its about the offensive unit as a whole. Last season our offense was terrible. The runningbacks were non-productive, the Wide Recievers were not getting open, the o -line wasnt impressive, and of courese the QB made mistakes at the wrong time. The 49ers game we had a chance to cut it to 4 going into half, instead Sanchez makes a mistake and its 10-0. Same with the Seahawks game, had a chance to go up 10-7 instead we lose 28-7.

And you can sit there and say that we would have lost anyway but each game is its own entity, if we are up 10-7 it changes everything. If we are down 7-3 it changes everything. It changes the way we play and it changes the way the opponent plays.

 

Yep, and the bolded is precisely why turnovers are such a big deal and why having a qb as a major culprit is such a huge disadvantage . . . turnovers really do change games, seasons, and careers.

 

Excellent point. Similar situation with the subsequent pass to Spadola.
First game of pre-season already told me plenty. MM might be the best Jet acquisition of 2013 by far.

 

Of the bolded part I don't see anything different except maybe the WR getting open under MM, and QB mistakes if it is not Sanchez.

 

I really do not understand why people think Geno looked "rough" last night. The guy went 6-7, and the play calling when Geno was in the game clearly was designed to get his feet wet and comfortable being out there and calling plays in a game environment... Kid has a lot of zip in his throws, and his pocket awareness looked pretty good.. Got out of a sack and if he didn't go down with the ankle injury, would have ran for a first down... If Geno had the plays that Sanchez had, I think he would have done better than Sanchez. Next week they should let him start and let him start zinging the ball down field.

 

Another factor is offensive coordinator calling the right plays at the right time. What if the 49ers called a different play at the end of the Super Bowl? perhaps they are Super Bowl champs?

ALOT of things have to click, thats why sometimes teams just get lucky.

 

I think they were having Geno play under center in live game action. Understandable and if it weren't for the injury he'd been out there longer. In his limited reps while not great he made a few good throws. I think he's gonna be good, once he gets comfortable he'll be a force. I hope they open up the play book and let him start next week.

 

I'm still worried about the QB position. I think there is promise that it can be better than last year, but I don't want just better than last year because that's not too difficult, I want it to be a strength on this team. I don't see that being the case right now, but we haven't started the real games left, so there is still hope

 

If a disastrous pick 6 doesn't worry you maybe nothing will.


And unfortunately we didn't get a good enough look at Geno to say anything either way.
