"The New York Jets wanted to see more of second-round draft pick Geno Smith after going three-and-out on two of three first-half series Friday night against the Detroit Lions. The Jets are unlikely to get that opportunity after Smith rolled his right ankle early in the third quarter. The rookie quarterback escaped pressure, but he apparently twisted his ankle to the inside at the tail end of a scramble. He immediately went for the sidelines as Greg McElroy came on in relief. Trainers have removed Smith's cleats and are examining the ankle. There's no official word from the Jets, but we suspect Smith's night is done. While Smith's performance was nondescript, Mark Sanchez's was anything but. The incumbent started the game with a mind-numbing pick-six on a screen pass that landed directly in the hands of rookie defensive end Ziggy Ansah. After another screen pass that was nearly picked off by Lions safety Glover Quin, Sanchez finally rallied the Jets to their first preseason touchdown since 2011. He bounced back to finish a more than respectable 10-of-13 for 125 yards with the touchdown and interception. "Trust me, I've been through a lot worse than that," Sanchez said of his pick-six on CBS via Jane McManus of ESPNNewYork.com. Handicapping the quarterback battle, Sanchez appeared to gain ground at Smith's expense Friday night. The veteran will have a chance to gain even more momentum if Smith's injury keeps him out for an extended period." This gives Mark some breathing room. But if Geno has to rest that leg longer than a week. Mark is probably a shoe in unless Mark gets hurt. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000228502/article/geno-smith-exits-new-york-jets-debut
Geno looked way better than Mark tonight who threw behind guys, threw a pick six and almost another int if it weren't for Kellen Winslow's tackle. Hope his ankle isn't anything major and he can start opening day. This game has only made me more confident to start the rookie.
Eh I disagree. Geno looked uncomfortable and a little nervous. He isn't used to seeing a defensive line with that kind of size, speed, and athleticism. Mark looked better to me (apart from the pick 6 obviously)
he needs to work on his footwork as I even think at one point he left his feet to throw a pass which was weak. Overall a massive w/e as it preseason game 1.
his footwork was decent, he came out from under center well. he got happy feet a couple times which i really really didnt want to see. i think they had a game plan for him to throw easy short quick throws where he could make a single read and get it out. he did not do anything even remotely spectacular but he wasnt given the chance to do anything even remotely spectacular. however he protected the ball and hit his receivers.
Watching Geno for 4 years, he will never throw a ball where you go what in the world was that? He will make plays like that (taking sacks for the most part) but he never lobs it up for anyone to grab. Thats 50% of Sanchez's throws. Thats the difference, and arm strength. Mark had a nice TD drive, but it was to break even since he gave the D a TD earlier. Sanchez is turnover prone and Geno isn't and tonight was a good example. If Geno is healthy, I think he will be the eventual starter by midseason
thats the key. if he continues that next week and sanchez gets another interception I think we know who wins this. shit, nothing but problems at RB...
it didn't look serious at all. just a foot planted at the wrong time and place that lead to him hobbling off the field. taking him to the locker room seems purely precautionary.
There saying Geno is walking without a limp in the locker room, doesn't look bad. Has a small sleeve on his ankle.
Yeah word is that he's totally fine and he said if it was a regular season game he would of went back in
Interesting considering that Mark was flawless AFTER the pick... Also interesting that everyone seems to conveniently dismiss the fact that the Pass went OFF OF WINSLOW'S HAND AND DEFLECTED RIGHT TO THE DB...
That was the second pass that almost turned into a pick 6. The first one was right at Ziggy Ansah who grabbed it and ran with it.
6 for 7 ain't bad for a road debut with limited opportunities to chuck it. If Geno can complete a high percentage of short range passes and not turn it over, I don't see how that doesn't give the team a "better chance to win" than Sanch buttfumble. Having said that, I hope Sanch starts all 16. 0-16 secures Bridgewater '14.
This statement is as ridiculous as people who think Sanchez is worse than JaMarcus Russell Flawless? Srsly? Have you seen better QBs play?
The Winslow pass wasn't great though, he had to jump for it from 5 yards away. Edit: After watching it again, the defender was jumping in front of him so it would have been tough. Still would have been better if he threw it to Winslow's left side though.
