For those who didn't come across it, I posted some notes on the "2013 Training Camp Day 8" thread. The feedback was positive so I'm following it up with some "bystander notes" from last evening's Green & White scrimmage from Cortland.

Weather: gorgeous; sunny, mid 70's, moderate wind from the north 8-10 mph.
Teams: Green = defense; White = offense
Field: All offensive drives were run from north-to-south (with the wind).
    Start time: 6:00 PM

    Pre-scrimmage notes:

    - Kickers (Folk-Cunduff) come out first and start practicing kicking towards the north endzone, i.e. into the wind. Looking at the two, both during practice on Friday (kickoff drills) and last night's FG's, Folk gets better height on the ball while Cunduff has slightly longer range.

    - Geno comes out sporting what looks like a pair of red skullcandy headphones and warms up throwing into the southern end zone for about 15 minutes then goes back inside.

    - Kickers then start kicking FG's towards the southern endzone. Coaches are out watching both of them. Cunduff gets the edge in the the FG kick off by nailing a 63-yarder that Folk doesn't attempt to match.
    - Punters (Malone-Quigley) come out to warmup along with long snappers Tanner Purdum (#46) and Patrick Scales (#68). Malone hit a brick off to the side for 35 yards then follows with a pair of 70 yarders (note: all punt distance in these notes are measured "in-the-air" and not from the line of scrimmage). As with Friday, Malone looks 6-8 yards longer than Quigley with better hangtime.

5:25 PM: out comes the "redshirts" (QBs). Sanchez warming up playing catch with McElroy, Smith playing catch with the sidearmer Simms.

    - After full team calisthenics, QB doing drills (square outs, slants, etc.) with WRs. Geno on one pass has the ball slip out of his hand.

    ________________________________________________

    Green & White Scrimmage:

Geno workin with 1's vs. 1's defense:

-Geno rolls out throws sideline pass broken up by Milliner.
-Geno swing pass to FB Hilliard, break tackle by Milliner and gets 1st down.
-Bilal Powell goes 35 yards--breaks tackle attempt by Cromartie.
-Geno slant complete to Gates for 10 yards
-Wildcat: TD by Powell called back by proceedure penalty
-Geno (under center) looks for Hill on a quick slant; Hill covered, Geno pulls it down and runs around right end down to the 3 yard line....but it too is called back for a holding penalty.
-Geno hits Gates on a long right side out pattern back down to the 3 yard line...Smith's best throw thus far.
-Powell run up the middle for 1 yard.
-Geno, a pair of drop off passes to Powell: 1st incomplete, 2nd broken up. End of bad "penalties-in-red-zone" drive. Otherwise, moved the ball well.

Mark working with the 2's vs. the 2's:

-Mark to Rueland in right flat for 2 yards.
-Mark rollout, pulls ball down and runs for 6 yards. 3rd down & 2.
-Snap goes over Sanchez' head (was not fumbled as suggested by those "listening" to streams in that other 'green-white' thread); Sanchez turns and runs backwards, gets a fortunate bounce of the ball, grabs ball on the fly, wheels to his right and fires an incomplete pass on the right sideline. 4th down.
-Malone on to punt: nails a bomb, 75 yards in the air.
    ________________________________________________

Repeat 2nd string offense with Mark at QB (John Griffith in at RB):
    -Griffith run for 2 yards.
-Mark throws ball away (Calvin Pace breaks through and is in his face).
-Mark to Reuland, incomplete (Pace good coverage).
-Quigley on to punt: hits 70 yarder (again all drives/kicks are going with the moderate 8-10 mph wind).

1st team offense vs. 2nd team defense with Geno at QB:
    -Geno to Cumberland completion
-Geno short run for 2 yards
-Geno to Gates for 3 yards
    -Malone punt: 46 yards

    Matt Simms in at QB:
    -Griffith run for 1 yard
-Simms intended bomb for Joseph Collins (#4) incomplete
-Simms throw from his own 25 over the middle is picked off by Eric Crocker (#41) at midfield...bad interception.

Greg McElroy in at QB (Chad Spann in at RB):
-Spann run, loss of 1 yard (backup OL, as on Friday, continues to look lousy)
-McElroy to Zack Rogers for 7 yards.
-Spann run, breaks Lanier Coleman (#61) tackle for 7 yards.
-McElroy Tight End screen to Ryan Spadola loses 5 yards.
-McEnroy follows with a bomb down the left sideline to Spadola who makes a great, falling backwards diving catch against Eric Crocker.
    -Folk PAT.

After Folk's PAT, there's field goal 'kick off competition' between Folk & Cunduff:
    - Both kickers hit from 45 yards
    - Folk misses from 48
    - Cunduff good from 52

Followed by "punt-off" between Malone & Quigley:
    -Malone (yards in air): 68/66/78 <--yes, 78!
    -Quigley (yards in air): 66/60/61

    ---Halftime Break---

1st offense vs. 1st defense - Mark Sanchez in at QB:

-Powell on a pitchout, loss of 2 yards.
-Mark to Kerley complete for 14 yards.
-Mark to Cumberland for 6 yards.
-Powell run for 9 yards. 1st down.
-Mark to Kerley down at the 10 yard line, good pass-ball dropped.
-Tommy Bohanan (#40) run for 9 yards.
-Mark to Kerley for 5 yards. Drive looking very good...but then...
-Mark backpedals, catches spike on turf and falls backwards on his backside. P.A. announcer says: "Sanchez 'sacked' by Landry" as the crowd roars laughing at the announcer.
-Swing pass to Powell, breaks a Quinton Coples would be tackle for 7.
-Mark overthrows Gates open in endzone on a post pattern; good read, bad miss.

2nd offense vs. 2nd defense - Geno Smith in at QB:

    -False start.
-Geno sacked (play whistled dead-no tackling the "redshirts").
-Geno swing pass to Griffith, breaks tackle, heads up field, Ricky Sapp comes over from the blind side and waxes Griffith.
-Another false start (2nd string OL looking like the Mulligan All-Stars...remember that walking 'yellow flag'?) 2nd down & 15 yards.
    -Griffith run for 3 yards.
-Geno throws an 'out' pattern intended for Zack Rogers; almost picked by Ellis Lankster.
-Geno floats incomplete pass with DL in his face.
    -Quigley punt: 68 yards.

    - Greg McElroy back in at QB:
-McElroy TD pass to Videl Hazelton (#18) over DB Royce Adams (#38). Hazelton ran an out-and-up pattern, Adams bit on the 'out' route and was beaten badly up the right sideline.

1st offense vs. 1st defense - Mark Sanchez in at QB:
    - Mark bomb down the left sideline is badly overthrown and is picked off by Cromatie down near the goal line. Crowd boos. Uh-oh…the natives are getting restless.

1st offense vs. 2nd defense - Geno Smith in at QB:
-Geno to Cumberland on nice left-to-right crossing pattern for around 20 yards.
    -Powell run for 1 yard.
-Geno to Braylon on right sideline out pattern for 6 yards (nice catch & drag feet by Braylon).
-Geno to Gates on a curl pattern (sitting in the zone) for 6 yards.
    -Kenrick Ellis called for encroachment.
    Time out called.
-Powell for 4 yards - good OL push.
-Spann in for Powell: runs for 6 yards and 1st down but play is nullified by a holding penalty.
-2nd and 12 from the 30: Geno to Ryan Spadola on slant; Spadola bobbles, is about to gather it in but is belted hard and can't gather it in. Good pass.
-Geno for Hill on left sideline, incomplete....Cumberland had a step on his man for a TD on the right side (jumps up & down in frustration) - Geno missed that read.

2nd offense vs. 2nd defense - Matt Simms in at QB:
    -Spann fun for 5 yards.
-Spann around left end for 20 yards...no edge contain, poor backside and downfield pursuit.
-Simms bomb down left sideline intended for K.J. Stroud (#83) incomplete.
-Simms to Rogers on a slant for 7 yards; Rogers leaves his feet on the catch and is caught in mid-air by Donnie Fletcher (#34) who lays the wood.
-Spann run up the gut for 6 yards.
-Spann off RT for 11 yards. 1st and goal from the 5 yard line.
    -Spann run for no gain.
-Simms play fake, interior pass to Chris Pentale (#44) almost picked off by Nick Bellore (risky pass).
-Simms pass for Joseph Collins (#4) broken up.
-On 4th down, Simms pass for Rogers tipped at the LOS, incomplete.

2nd offense vs. 2nd defense - Mark Sanchez in at QB:
-Clyde Gates on a double reverse play loses 7 yards.
-Mark bomb to Stephen Hill down the right sideline good for 57 yard TD. As Mark releases ball and Hill breaks it deep, Hill give just a 'slight nudge' to Ellis Lankster covering which gives him (Hill) just that little 1/2 step needed. Slick play by the 2nd year GT beast.
For the PAT, Cunduff is moved back and off to the side for a 39 yard 'PAT' attempt. Kick good.

    - End of Green & White scrimmage -
    ________________________________________________

    apres' notes:

Willie Colon (#66) a nice, beast pickup for the OL.

-QB's running gassers. Geno kept up with them; McElroy best of the bunch.
-Gates, Hazelton, Hill (still wearing pads) & SANTONIO HOLMES running 1/2 speed width-of-field "sprints" - Holmes didn't look bad. Guy is slightly bowlegged; didn't notice that before.

Signing afterwards. Cunduff & Quigley - Folk and Malone didn't. Rex looks like a slimmed-down breadstick compared to the beasts in uniform. Crowd announced at a little over 6,000.

That's it for now. Will post some more observations later. Hope this helps.

Great job! Thanks for all of the detailed analysis. For those of us who couldn't attend, it really provides some excellent insights into the team's performance.

Awesome job, Joe! Great to hear about Colon.

Just wondering, who do you think looked better between the fullbacks? Looks like they both got first team snaps.

Thanks for the report. Nice to read it as play by play vs. randon updates. What would you say were your top concerns after watching both training camp day 8 and the Green and White scrimage? Thanks!

was he still doing that duck thing with his plant foot pointing backward?

i hope you got to enjoy the scrimmage and werent sending yourself texts all night!

great report, a lot more information than what I have been reading from the beat writers on Twitter... anyone else notice how Manish is just furious with the Jets lately? Ever since Pettine left he's a new mini Cimini haha

Also out of curiosity, who looked to have more control of the offense? It sounded like on the radio that Geno was showing some leadership qualities and had a good grasp of what was going on (one of the knacks against him coming out of college was he was a "system" qb)

Thanks for the write-up. Sounds like the Jets still have some questions to answer and nobody is making the job easy for them. I'm guessing that Sanchez is edging towards the exits but he's not making a beeline for them.

Great post. I was wondering if you had some more insight on the defensive side, I listened to it on the radio and other than picks and would-be sacks didn't feel like they were giving much news on that side.

How did Milliner look? Richardson? Coples playing mostly hand down or standing up? What about our safety group?

Any defensive notes you can provide would be appreciated.

Thanks for the taking the time to give us your 1st person perspective. Did you notice Ricky Sapp making an impact? I saw you wrote about him once tackling Griffin. He was called out by Rex in the PC and all the beat writers praised him too.

Joe is making a case for best Jets beat reporter of 2013 and he is not even a beat reporter.

Thanks, joe. Now you have given me two different days worth of great input to pore over.
