Brian Costello @BrianCoz 45s RB Joe McKnight will not play in the scrimmage tonight. He suffered a head injury yesterday. Not sure how bad it is. #NYJ
How did he over pursue them? And how did Idzik swing for the fences? You lost me there. There is no way Idzik could rebuild this roster in one offseason with all the holes and bad contracts he was left. He was looking to hit a single or double at best this year. If the Geno Smith pick was a swing for the fences, I completely disagree. He was a projected early to mid first round pick was drafted in the second round. If we works out and starts for 7-10 years, that is value. Ivory was a smart signing on paper. He is a physical, fast back with very little tread on the tires. If he didn't have some flaws (injury history) and was not on a team with multiple running backs, he doesn't go for a 4th round pick. Goodson only costs money and only if he plays. He was signed to a three year $7 million deal, with $1 million signing bonus. If he can't play, the Jets will get the same cap relief the Pats are getting with Hernandez. I have to think the Jets know what is going on and if the news was bad, he would be long gone by now.
Ivory has little tread, because he doesnt play. Same as Goodson. He got 1 mil up front. Cant really discuss th e cap ramifications, because we dont know the contract, however...my point more or less was (put the goodson arrest aside) 6 mil, plus...that havent sniffed the first team. One or the other (Ivory, imho) would have been good. But both? I see that as two things...a de facto endorsement of Sanchez. Undeserved, and trying to hit one out. You spend your FA money, on 2nd tier backs..passing on QBs, that A: you had in Seattle, and B: played for your new OC...then spend your first round picks, on defensive players? Idzik hit the lotto when Geno fell to 39.
Not saying the season is over, that would be massively overblowing it. But what does that say for Ivory who tweaked a hamstring and he hasn't even taken any hits yet? He's supposed to carry the load and be a starter, yet he can't even make it through training camp? Just not very encouraging is all I'm saying. But not surprising for some, because he's known to be injury prone more than anything else. As for Goodson, who the hell knows if he'll even be in decent shape to start the season, if he even comes back. And ROFL using AP not playing in the preseason as an example. He tore his ACL in the last game of the season and is just a freak of nature.
The way i see it is if Goodson is MIA or gets cut we should get a vet FA to fill the void. Turner, McGahee, Wells all are on the decline but we could get 1 cheap as a stop gap till next draft and they can hopefully chew up some snaps.
Michael Turner is 31 years old and has averaged close to 300 carries per season over the past 5 years. He is as much or more of a risk than Ivory at this point. That's not even taking into account legal issues.
Running back is a young man's position. I'd rather pluck someone off the waiver wire on final cutdown day.
When we pulled the trigger for Goodson my guess is that at that point Ivory wasn't available. Right at this moment it looks like bad money, but we're not reaching for the panic button....yet
This had absolutely nothing to do with Sanchez. I don't know how you can possibly read into that. Goodson is a solid back when he's on the field, but he wasn't proven enough to carry the load himself. Ivory is a very good back when he's on the field, but he hasn't proven enough to carry the load himself. Getting both increases the odds that one hits and becomes an above average starting runner for you. If the Jets only got one, they still would have needed another running back to be safe.
Exactly, not a single player I would want now. For now, you hope Ivory and Goodson get back on the field and produce, and keep developing Powell and maybe McKnight as insurance policies. If Ivory, Goodson and McKnight fall through, keep an eye on cutdown day and sign someone that has talent but was not quite good enough to make another team's roster.
I don't think anyone is expecting our currernt crop of HBs to be pulling up any trees. If however they do turn on the jets and become a good tandem, then great, if not we pick up by draft, trade or draft next season. This is year 1 of team rebuild (again) and we all want to see progress not regress , so far that's happening and if I'm honest think we are well ahead of where we need to be, and some of those glaring holes aren't so much any more. I'm happy with the way things are going right now
Yep, thats pretty much it. Absolutely no point in picking up any one of those players. That said Darren McFadden will be a UFA next season. He would fit in very well to Marty's O.
Here's how I see the current situation: Worst case scenario- Ivory has an injury plagued camp and preseason and does not show enough to warrant the starting job. Goodson remains wherever he currently is and also does not warrant a starting job. Powell continues doing well and starts on opening day for us. Is that really such an awful situation? A young, shifty, motivated back who can make people miss... Would it be the end of the world if he got some time on the field to show what he can do? I certainly am more intrigued by Powell than I am at the prospect of bringing in McGahee or Turner. Yes, he is not proven but neither was Alfred Morris or Vick Ballard last year and they put together nice seasons which paid off for their respective teams. Best case scenario- Ivory gets back soon, Goodson comes back from wherever he is and they all compete with the most deserving man winning the job and seizing the opportunity to show he is deserving to be a starting RB in the NFL.
If you have Drew Brees or Aaron Rodgers, you can afford to have dreck at RB. With Sanchez/Geno you need a good running game a lot more. Just the fact they haven't cut Goodson yet after two months of nothing but headaches speaks volumes over the lack of what's out there to replace him with.
Even if both were healthy and present, your RB situation still sucks. I can understand the optimism, with the outlook of "hoping" Ivory plays like a stud. Hope is exactly what it is though. But with the way jets fans talk you'd think he ready was a top back. None of the average backs on your roster have ever done anything. I like them, but can we call it what it is? They're ok backs. They're not top backs, or even close. I'm still a McKnight fan btw. I hope he gets another shot.
Who cares if the season is only a month away and none of our good RBs are healthy or around to learn the system, get into a rhythm with the rest of the offense, practice their handoffs from the QBs, etc.? How could that possibly be a bad thing?
