With ya completely. It's like they're incapable of finding anything splashy to exploit w/ the actual team..so they center in on management philosophy. They fail to realize that they themselves have no business drawing any inferences about behind the scenes chain of command nor do the Jets have any obligation to inform them of the true dynamic.
Now that I think of it, I'm glad Izzy has a say in the starting QB. Not many organizations would start the rookie backup, but Russel Wilson impressed in camp and got the job. No bias. Hopefully this really puts an emphasis on the best players starting here as well.
The media is blowing this out of proportion because they need to sell something and *anything* that stands out is a potential selling point. That's the single most important thing that I would communicate to anybody joining the Jets - parse your words carefully because to you they are just opinions, statements, even trial balloons, but to the media they are red meat dripping with juices and ready to grill over a hot fire.
The media certainly loves the Jets. Anytime, I click on yahoo, it never fails, there is usually something about the Jets. Right now, I think there are 3 articles on yahoo something Jets related. Even articles not about the Jets like "Arron Hernandez has to wear Jets green prison suit". It's crazy how much they love us. Does anyone know if there are other training camps going on? :breakdance:
my conspiracy theory is that the decision has already been made to start Sanchez and Idziks quote was made to pre empt the eventual storyline "Idzik want Smith but Rex goes with Sanchez". By putting out the collaborative decision quote Idzik will have shown that he is on board with Mark as the starter and not be out of step with Rex who declared in past as long as I'm here Mark is my guy.
For developmental purposes only, I think it would be wise to let Sanchez start. The offense is still under construction. Maybe, plug Geno in for some drives, blow outs and later in the season; depending. Build the foundation around Geno for 2014 start. For now, the competition and the perspective that it's a 'close call', for who will start, is a good thing. Competition tests skill, mettle and ultimately breeds success.
Idzik was part of the team that threw in RWilson after a good camp. Don't be so sure about set in stone starters.
All we know for sure is Ferguson and Mangold are manning LT and C and on defense Wilkerson has one DE spot locked, Cro is the #1 corner and Landry is - safety
Neither Rex nor the GM should pick the starting QB. This is Mornhaiweg's offense and he's working with both these guys on a daily basis. He's the guy that should be in charge of who's behind center.
I agree 100% that starting Sanchez makes sense. As has been said already - one of the worst scenarios is to start Geno and have the Jets go 1-3 with some close loses. Then the NY media will be all over us to pull Geno for Sanchez. I fully expect Sanchez to start and lose his job after the bye week.
The decision as to who plays is collaborative but it is determined amongst the coaching staff. I certainly understand wanting to defend this as a fan but it is ridiculous for a GM to be involved in a decision like this. From Jerry Jones or the late Al Davis I would expect this. Not John Idzik who came from a franchise that allowed the coaching staff to make the on-field decisions.
Let's not get this confused. Belichick is just vague in his answers. This past year, Rex has lied and continuously contradicted himself.
I have no problem with Idzik being involved in this decision. Ultimately, the decision should be based on what benefits the future of the franchise.
Idzik has an extensive football background, especially with personnel. He's qualified to help make decisions like this. It's not like having Woody make the call. Besides, it's not like he's making the final call. They are all working together to determine the pros and cons of starting each individual. I'd be that MM & David Lee have the most say in the decision.
Could you please list Rex's lies from the past year? Having confidence in his players publicly isn't lying, it's motivating. What contradictions are you referring to?
When Rex has those problems with emotional ties that's where Idzik helps make the right decision. And like other people have said it's not like Idzik doesn't have the football background. Problem solving through collaboration is a good thing.
Maybe Idzik saw this video at the 58-second mark... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JiQ7YVP-xY ...and after seeing Sanchez feeling comfortable enough with his head coach to wipe his snot on his jacket, Idzik saw the need to remove Ryan from the sole decision and make it a decision by committee.
