And it may be the only edge he needs ... http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/jets/leg_up_for_geno_L4CP4VCANETQ4miB87KPyJ
"General manager John Idzik yesterday said it will be “a collective effort” that decides who will be the Jets starting quarterback. Idzik, Ryan, offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, quarterbacks coach David Lee and various scouts will all have input." That is refreshing to hear.
My interest has been piqued by Idzik's latest comments. I'd love to be a fly on the wall in those discussions about the Qbs.
I am not thrilled with the "collaborative effort" rex needs to have the power to name the qb.he can take idzicks input but at the end of the day the coach needs to decide who starts. just like the g.m. has to decide who we sign, draft, trade for etc.
This was my initial reaction. However, I asked myself how much Rex should be trusted to make the ultimate decision regarding the most important position on Offense, specifically Sanchez. Rex's judgement and development regarding Sanchez has been very questionable throughout their time here. So, I'm actually very okay with Idzik et al also having input and weight in the competition/winner.
Maybe Idzik doesn't believe Rex is truly objective. One of his biggest flaws is his unflinching loyalty to his veterans. This might be Idzik's way of keeping Rex honest. I'm just speculating of course, but it makes sense to me.
Good read. But thread title is not per standards and I am afraid Royal Tee will make a big deal out of it. I am also not thrilled to hear what Idzik said about the QB pick. A head coach should be able to pick his own coach. Even if that is not the case, GM shouldn't announce it to the media that the decision will be a joint one. Protecting your HC's integrity is a pretty big deal imho. Also I like hearing good stuff about Geno. Even if he can't get the job week 1, eventually he will be the go to guy as I am sure Sanchez will again be terrible.
Making the correct decision is more important - crucial - than the perception of Rex's integrity. And making the correct decision might best be achieved by more minds, not just Rex's (in this specific case).
I disagree with this. I think it should be a collective decision. Rex is a great defensive mind, but his track record with him trying to put his hands on the offense isnt the greatest. He also seems to have a better relationship with Sanchez (rightfully so, being that theyve been together for 4 years), and I think that could affect Rex's judgement slightly. I think its good that MM and Lee are new here and have no real ties with any of the QBs. They can come in here with no bias and choose who wins. The QB and OC will know who is more fit for the job than our defensive minded coach. Also the scouts and GM who spent the time researching Geno should have some sort of input, being as they drafted the kid- they can see how he has progressed since his college tape.
if rex wants to make it a collaborative effort that's fine. I just don't want rex's hand to be forced. and this goes to every position not just qb. the coach needs to make playtime decisions otherwise his authority is undermined.
You can make the same point for the GM who's higher ranking than Rex, the OC who will be calling the plays for the QB and the QB coach who will be working with the QB everyday. Personally, I dont really care about undermining Rex's authority here (other cases are different), but the people who are actual authorities on the offense and QB position should have a good amount of say in choosing the starting QB. If Rex is involved in the draft process, Idzik should be involved in decisions like this. Idzik has made it clear that his way of running the organization will be a collective effort on all decisions.
The collaborative effort comments don't bode well for Sanchez IMO. lol - oops ... didn't have my coffee yet when I started this.
I'm not sure how I feel about the idea of the GM over-ruling the head coach on a decision like who the starting QB is. That said you're 100% right that it is a collective effort and the GM clearly should have some say in who plays. If Rex is not involved at all in the draft process then there's a problem. If Idzik is not involved at all on who plays or sits then there's a problem. The trick is finding the right mix and getting the best out of both of them even when the other guy is in the driver's seat in the process in question.
again, input is one thing, but rex should have final say. just as idz has final say on draft picks. I am fine with collective efforts and I would hope there is plenty of discussion. but basically I wonder, who breaks any ties? I would hope it is rex.
It certainly helps Rex keep his job if it doesn't work out..and maybe that's the whole intention of it.
Leberfield made a good point about this, he just too light at 218 lbs to run the read option i would be worried about him getting banged up on every play
When you get a bunch of smart football people in one room and you go with the majority vote, it tends to lead to very productive results. Rex is an amazing coach I'm my eyes but I truly believe in what Idzik is establishing for this team right now. He may very well be the piece that was lacking in order for us to see some really amazing results. Only time will tell.
The OC and QB coach will always have a heavy influence. The more surprising part is Idzik having that influence (or even more influence). The HC is responsible for who goes on the field. If the wrong guy is out there, the HC can and should get ripped for it. If the organization is divided, it should absolutely be Rex's call. On a side note, the Jets are clearly in a rebuilding year, yet have left their HC on the hot seat which does not make sense to me. They should either have Ryan onboard for the duration of the rebuild, or have parted ways this year. It certainly could effect your judgement of how to develop players, and get them on the field for the teams best long term interests, if you feel the difference between 1 win or loss will cost you the job. I think he's the right guy for the job. I hope there are at least off the record conversations going on with Rex on what the org is looking for from him in terms of rebuilding and measures of success for this year. Playoffs is a total long shot, and should not be the measure in my opinion.
i agree in the potential productivity of smart football people hashing over big decisions. i also really like the pragmatic approach Idzik has brought. it provides a steady balance to Rex's passionate approach.
