Santonio Holmes on New York Jets' PUP list Published: July 23, 2013 at 11:20 p.m. Updated: July 24, 2013 at 12:20 a.m The New York Jets officially placed wide receiver Santonio Holmes on the physically unable to perform list Tuesday, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported. The move was unsurprising, after Holmes told reporters last weekend that there was no hard timetable for his return to action after surgery to repair a severe Lisfranc fracture in his foot. "It's just getting back into the swing of walking and running without any pains from having scar tissue build up around the injury," Holmes said, per the New York Daily News. "It's really difficult to learn how to walk again. To do so much balance work, you don't realize what you have until it's gone. To lose a ligament and have separation in your joints, have screws placed in." Holmes injured his left foot in the Jets' 34-0 loss to San Francisco in Week 4 last season and needed two operations to repair it, including one in February to remove screws from the foot. He has yet to put full weight on the foot while working out on a gravity-assisted treadmill. Holmes still can come off the PUP list any time, but if he begins the season on the list, he'll have to sit out six games. With obvious concerns at wide receiver, the Jets reportedly are hosting free-agent receivers Laurent Robinson and Austin Collie for workouts this week. The Jets also placed defensive linemen Junior Aumavae and Jake McDonough, and defensive backs Mike Edwards and Rontez Miles on the PUP list. Cornerback Darrin Walls was also placed on the non-football injury list. Earlier Tuesday, wide receiver Thomas Mayo was waived-injured after recently hurting a knee. Gratuitous Linky
The guy hasent even begun to put his full weight on it while running, yikes! Think how out of shape he must be as he most likely hasent been able to work on his stamina ( maybe strength) since last season. I am expecting him to miss the 1st 6 games of the season. He will also be playing for a 1 year deal next offseason as he will probably be a cut after the season. This isn't good for either QB. Still boggles my mind why the jets didn't address the WR position in the draft
We knew this was going to happen. Suprised that both McDonough and Miles are on the PuP list ... seemed like those were two that might have had a shot to play themselves onto the practice squad at least.
Its time to seriously rethink bringing in Edwards while we look at the abilities of Collie, Robinson, and start looking at fringe players like Ocho and TO. I personally don't want either of those last 2 on the team but this is desperation mode considering Holmes may miss more than 6 games at this rate. We don't have to bring them all in but we should consider at least one of them.
I would rather bring in Randy Moss if it comes down to that level of desperation. Bring in Collie, Robinson and Steve Breaston (from Arizona)
Not surprised. Holmes will come back when he's good and ready. Wouldn't be surprised if he's placed on the PUP list to start the season and misses the first 6 games. People need to move on from Edwards. The amount of love he gets on this board is laughable. I'd take a flyer on Collie. A reliable route runner that you can trust is what this offense needs. The concussions are a concern though. I expect Winslow will be the go-to-guy early this season...
Agree. Collie & Robinson are fragile goods that are one closing free safety hit away from their lightbulb heads lighting up "TILT!" As for TO, never thought I'd say this but desperate times call for desparate measures. Maybe kick the tires here? If so why not sooner than later. Yes I'm sure they're looking to see what other WRs become available but with the installation of a new offense, why not get him in now unless he's in free fall physically-speaking. Holmes has weight-bearing issues involving a weight-bearing structure?....let alone getting back to where he can place additional stress on it when planting hard, cutting hard? Damn, doesn't look good.
I don't know, my guess is they know what he can do and want to give the young guys a chance to step up.
Braylon also has some recent experience with WCO with the 9'ers. Good chance he'll know a lot of what he needs to coming in.
I'm all for bringing in a safety net veteran WR due to the Holmes situation. I just don't see how Braylon helps. It's not 2010 anymore..the guy can't get any depth on his routes. He's done.
he is not the same player but he didn't look done late last year and he can be a big help in developing Hill who is also a big target w/ downfield speed that has had hands issues.
Holmes won't be ready for the season opener and the Jet really blew it not signing a veteran WR. I can't believe they are going into this season with the same crap WR corps as the end of last year. It does not matter who the QB is , we have the worst set of weapons in the league. Holmes won't even be a Jet next year because his contract is outrageous. Let Sanchez play and get killed and Smith can learn what not to do.
Just because he's on the PUP now, doesn't mean he'll still be there in more than a month. No reason to already start assuming he's missing 6 games. I highly doubt they'd force Holmes to miss 6 games when he's day to day. That doesn't make the least bit of sense. They'll take him off pup before the season starts so he has a chance to come back. If we bring in Edwards or Collie, they need to do it before training camp instead of waiting until the last second.
Whats funny is that I'm willing to bet this same conversation took place earlier this offseason and you and some of the other koolaid drinkers said "no reason to start assuming he won't be ready for training camp.." This will be Holmes' last year in NY. He knows this. He's recovering from a major injury. If he tries to return as quickly as he can, he risks being looked at as if he lost a step, costing himself money. Not being able to play is better than playing poorly. He is not the type to want to play above all else - He's going to sit out as long as possible until he's completely ready. I expect that week 6, maybe...
