I would like to hear straight from Marty Mornhinweg that we would be running option plays - I just wouldn't think a credible OC like Marty would use Geno Smith in run-option plays., it's not his forte and it's certainty not his game.

McElroy doesn't attend the camp. Simms doesn't attending the camp. No one even mentions it.

But Smith doesn't attend Jets West Camp and it's a huge freaking deal.

Except you left out part of the Steelers QB story in the early 70's. Noll was not sold on Bradshaw and Joe Gilliam came along in 1972 and played in multiple games from 72-75 and started a bunch of games over Bradshaw during that period, including 1974 when the Steelers won their first SB.

I don't know if this means anything for the Jets, but things were different back then and it truly took years for a QB to mature.

I would prefer that the Jets not rush Smith and unless Smith wins the job outright by a large margin, I would start Sanchez and let Smith continue to learn and grow. I would not start Smith any sooner than after the bye week, regardless of how the Jets and Sanchez are playing. With the lack of offensive weapons on this team, I don't know how Smith has a chance to succeed this season.

  5. Name a time in modern NFL when the option has been prominent. This is brand new territory. Recent statistics say that you can drastically improve offensive production particularly on 3rd down as well as in the red zone w/ a change of pace at QB who can run zone reads, speed options & the like.

It'd be one thing if the Jets were asking Smith to run an entire offense based around the option. Perhaps than I'd have questions about Smith's lack of experience level with the system. We're talking about a weekly package of 5-10 plays. If Smith can't learn or master a handful of option plays week to week...he doesn't belong in the NFL.

Furthermore we're not talking about having Drew Bledsoe hit the corner w/ a pitchman. We're talking about an athletic kid w/ more than enough speed & know how to execute such a notion.

This is about the Jets adjusting w/ the times.

Adjusting with the times is drafting an option QB and having him run a sub-option package for you.

Having a QB who has never run the option run the option despite the fact that he wasn't all that good a running QB in college when he had to run is just stupid.

Never ask a player to do something that you're uncertain he can do. That way when he screws up it's his fault. If the Jets ask Smith to run the option and he can't do that it is the Jets fault because there is no reason to believe he can do that successfully at this point.

If the Jets are seriously thinking about doing this then they're wishing and that's the last thing you want to do in a rebuild phase. Do the things you know you can get done. Make them succeed. Don't spin your wheels in the mud.

i find it funny that upon Dick Cimini's keen observation that Sanchez is oh so clearly ahead in this pony race (despite evidence to the contrary from the coaches and general media consensus during spring camps) Smith is now seen as having a mediocre offseason.

people spread this guys word like gospel, despite the fact there really isn't much separation between the two. Its truly fascinating to me to see how one can shift the narrative so easily. I feel like after he went to camp, Cimini told his bosses it was too close to get a real feel for who's won so they just told him pick a winner and run with it.

Mind you, I'd be fine if Mark won so long as he was clearly the best choice, but the whole thing just feels fabricated to fit an easy to make agenda for the next few moths, like a tie isn't as interesting to read about as a lead.

Before anything happens in a game, itll be practiced in the TC. If it fails, I dont see why they'd try it in the game. If Geno's athleticism is underrated and he can in fact run it, sure, then maybe its an option... Personally, I dont see it happening. Why have Geno learn something that isnt necessary, while he can be working on his footwork or mechanics or learning the playbook?

I dont see that potential payoff being worth the time and effort.

Yeah, I dont get this personally. What I read on twitter didnt really describe him as disappointing or mediocre. The impression I got was that the kid from a raw ability standpoint is great- he was just inconsistent with the mental stuff and his footwork, which is expected from a rookie.

Ive said this before, but Russel Wilson wasnt truly turning heads at this point last year. He was the 3rd string QB up until about the 3rd preseason game. Tannehill wasnt going to start either if it wasnt for a David Garrard injury, and now he's being touted as the next great thing (I do like him, but the hype is just overwhelming).

  10. The Jets had an option QB. He couldn't throw an NFL pass..his name was Tim Tebow. Most true option/Wishbone QBs play it in college for a reason...their arms are below average. It still works in college against sub par defenses if your backfield has enough ball carrying ability but that doesn't fly in the NFL. Without the threat of the pass the defense just sells out on all the running gaps.

Under this assumption of not asking players to venture into untested waters..wouldn't the same hold true for Geno moving from the air raid to the WCO? Wilkerson/Coples/Richardson/Davis never playing in Rex's 46? Brandon Moore from DT to OG? Maybe I'm going alittle too far but you see my point...where do you draw the line? At some point every aspect of the NFL is significantly different from college & every player is asked to adapt to new responsibilities.

If the argument is that he'll be ineffective, or that he'll take too many big hits..Those are valid & debatable topics worth further discussion.

But football is becoming more & more about getting creative with your athletes & less about traditional position labels. This movement toward option in the modern day offense is supportive of that. Why not try to take advantage of Geno's skill set in a game day specific package? It's an idea that can easily be scrapped in camp if he's not grasping or it proves completely ineffective.

Sure he was! I mean he was great all season, he was obviously always the guy, theres no correlation between the two backs if the media that feeds me doesn't point it out!

I think Cimini actually said that smith wasn't doing measurably well like wilson did at that point. shows how much he knows, but hey gotta keep that narrative up!

Maybe the Jets can use that tap-pass that Geno ran in school.

I know I am going to get killed for this but I would like to offer a third option. It may be a bit of a long shot and I am sure most will blow me off, yet, still a possibly while he still on the roster.
Yes,I am going to throw GMac into the equation. If he gets the chance on an equal footing with Mark and Geno then maybe, just maybe he could make a run at a hold the fort season until Geno is ready. Then if Geno out plays him, a solid backup with starting experience.
The reason I say this is GMac skill set seems to fit MM system fairly well. Almost like the offense he ran in Alabama, short accurate passing game, with the occasional deep ball. Built around a tough ground and pound running game with ball security a main focus.
Could it happen, not likely, yet I think if given the protection and the reps and a solid chance.anything is possible. .

that is because they weren't drafted to replace Sanchez. do you really not see the difference between Smith and Mcelroy and Simms? If not, I apologize for being harsh, I don't want anyone to think I would deliberately pick on special needs children.

No reason to worry about getting killed for an honest opinion.

That wouldn't be the first time that a 3rd string guy pulled ahead of starters.

I have not heard much about Gmac lately, except bad things from beat reporters, which really means zilch.

He surprised me in the AZ game. He looked poised and composed. But if he ends up doing anything, it would best be served in preseason.

He won't get a prayer of a chance before that.

    And probably after.

I don't really understand why anybody would expect Geno Smith to attend an informal players-only gathering that is run by the guy whose job he is trying to take.

If Sanchez were my rival for the job I wouldn't be spending time at his passing camp either.

If you're vying for the starting QB position on a team the last thing you want to do is attend an event that is designed to prop one of your rivals and this year that's what Jets West is.

You all notice that McElroy and Simms aren't there either, right?

Both have attended in the past, in McElroy's case at the Jets request. Both decided they had better things to do than watch Sanchez run his own football camp this year.

Geno should have gone. I know they are competing, but that doesn't mean you should shun the guy and not be good team mates. There are competitions on the line, at WR, and at RB and you don't see them not working together. Geno seems like he's putting himself above the team. Jets West is supposed to build chemistry. The people that are trying to say that Geno shouldn't go, are just Sanchez haters that are so afraid of Sanchez teaching him the wrong stuff. That's the same nonsense that they spew on espn radio. That excuse is laughable. The camp is about team chemistry. How is Geno going to beat out Mark if he doesn't build chemistry with his receivers? It's only going to hurt him overall. If you're trying to win a starting job, you need to go above and beyond and do everything you can to win. Clearly that's not the attitude Geno has, and that's why he will not beat out Mark with a selfish type mentality. Either that or he's just not very smart and thinks he'll easily beat Sanchez, so he doesn't have to try. Smith will go nowhere in the NFL with an attitude like that. Being a minimalist may get you places in the government, but it doesn't work in the NFL.
