He was however the only 'consensus' top 10 pick, that fell to 39. Value pick. His draft status was so widely accepted to everyone but the 32 GMs, that the Jets could have taken him at 13, and no one would have blinked an eye. Though, the Cowgirls leaked draft board saw it differently. My point was, if you were sold on Smith, and all but dovorced from Nacho, you dont roll the dice. Buffalo went up to grab EJ. Any other QB needy team could have done the same. We always getthe 'jets tried to move up' balderdash. Lets take a look at that logic. We have an all Pro CB. Several 1st round DL picks. We hate pur QB. Lets take a CB, DL, and pray, Smith falls to 39? value pick.
No. He doesnt. And today Armand, in case the Salary Cap rules escape you, the fact that Geno is cheap, and Sanchez is not, dictates playing Sanchez, and allowing Geno to develop, Its not costing you anything.
Beach, the Jags play came down to one play, as many games do. 3:43, 1st and 10 from the Jets 10 up 7, run, one yard. 3:03, 2nd and 9, run one yard. 3rd and 8, from the 12. 2:56, thats the kind of play he has made time and time again, which leads some to believe he can function with a better OC. And it wasnt just a delivery that every QB should make. It was perfect. Cumberland barely has to turn his head, and cradle the ball as it drops over his ear hole. Cumberland, perfectly over the right shoulder in stride 30 yards down field, game, pretty much over. The guy has a decent knack for dropping the ball in over the shoulder, without making the guy stop or turn, (and Im not listing plays so dont go there, Holmes in Ne,Braylon in Ne, cumberland in Jax,McKnot in St.louis) when 80% of QBs need the receiver to make the play...thats a skill many guys just dont have.
Just because Smith is a value pick doesn't mean the Jets weren't planning on replacing Sanchez with another QB at that pick or another later pick. You can't equate one to the other. All we know is that Geno was the highest rated QB on the Jets board when their 2nd round pick came up. We don't know if they had a player at another position more highly rated than Geno but QB was seen as a big enough need that it took rank over value. The Jets GM came from a team that started a 3rd round pick last year and made the playoffs. He may have had a handful of QB's on his radar that he figured could be an upgrade over Sanchez. It seems your conclusion is based on what you want to believe rather than the available facts.
Tannenbaum built for those postseasons while barely thinking about the future at all. He was handing out bad contracts and draft picks like candy. In the end, he was not a good GM. Just like in the end, Mark Sanchez is not a good QB. If he wins the job and fails, will you make excuses for him?
my mistake you said picks not sacks. He had 2 picks that day, the first was on the first play of the game and jax got it on their 45. Hardly crippling. The 2nd INT could have been crippling but jax turned it over back to us 2 plays later. Worse FP but we did have it 1st and 20 on our 45 on mark's pick so there weren't any crippling picks. A big time D has to make the stop late, jax wasn't some offensive juggernaut(you know like the '11 Broncos, '09 or '10 phins). Our D had a chance to end the game, a big time D ends it.
He was managing the cap pretty well, we heard for years how we were in cap hell yet this was the first offseason we had any issues and we really didn't have issues. We got rid of a bunch of guys we were planning on moving anyway. regardless of anything else his teams won more playoff games and had more chances at SBs than any other in team history.
The fact that Sanchez is not cheap and Geno is means that in 2014 we can cut Sanchez and have a 99.9 percent expectation of Geno at least playing up to his level and a 50 percent chance of exceeding Sanchez. This is for far less than what Sanchez will cost. Getting rid of Chez frees up quite a bit of money. I don't know what the hell you see in him now, but the guy is not good. He's average. Average QBs rarely win the Superbowl or have sustained success. I Geno average? We don't know. Is he above average? We don't know. But, in this case, the devil we don't know may help us more than the devil we do
We barely have the cap space this year to significantly upgrade our team thanks to, in large part, your boy's contract. This is in addition to Harris and Holmes eating up massive amounts of cap space. If you can't see that, you're truly blind in lust of Sanchez. As an average fan, I feel bad for you...Superfan
Nice cognizant post about the sad state of affairs w/ the team. WTGG GangGreen radio....All Sanchez, all the time.
we have plenty of cap room, I don't mind what Idzik is doing as far as getting rid of contracts and freeing things up for next year but we had plenty of cap room to retain or acquire new players. As usual you have no idea what you are talking about.
Tanny was not managing the cap well from the perspective of building anything likely to endure for more than a season or two at any given point. He was overly reliant on overpaid veteran free agents. He was overly reliant on players going post-prime. He was overly reliant on bad draft picks that made the roster and stuck anyway because they were the only affordable alternatives given what he was paying everybody else. The Jets cap wipeout could and probably should just as easily have been 2011 as 2013. Losing Damien Woody was an inevitable problem on the Jets offensive line. Replacing him with a ridiculously overpaid Wayne Hunter was not inevitable in any way. The Jets could and should have thrown that position open to a bunch of young players and tried to sort out an adequate replacement for Woody. Losing one or more of the WR's was probably inevitable after 2010 given that all three of them wanted more money than the Jets had available to pay them. The answer was probably to open those slots up to a bunch of young players and try to sort the situation out instead of overpaying for Plaxico Burress and Mason to fill the slots. The LB's definitely should have been sorted out after 2011 at the latest. All of those guys with the exception of Harris were going late prime at the same time and all of them were overpaid given their contributions. Instead to free up cap space elsewhere their cap hits had been pushed into 2012 and their status with the team pre-determined as a result of that. We narrowly avoided the same situation with the DT's and really only avoided a prolonged problem there because there just wasn't enough money available in 2010 and 2011 to lock up DeVito and Pouha long-term.
He was GM for 7 years, we had 2 bad years ('07, '12). We were playoff contenders in every other season. How many times have we been playoff contenders 5 times in a 7 year stretch? I don't think it has ever happened. I think he started to plan, he drafted Davis to take over for Scott but it wasn't just him, I think rex had a larger say than we know. if he knew 2012 was going to suck I think he would have cut some guys last year and gotten them off the books for this year. I'm not saying Tannenbaum was great but he wasn't bad, I think as fans we tend to bash everyone after they leave and forget all the positive things they did.
I'm just pointing out that managing the cap doesn't mean anything when the team is getting older and worse while you are doing it. Whoever is managing the 49ers cap right now has a real challenge ahead of them. The Jets never had that challenge because most of managing their cap was just paying older players too much money a year or two down the road so the roster kind of fit together today.
Thats not what I said. But its clear they had no plans on replacing him TODAY. Otherwise, you dont roll the dice..... There wasnt a QB available, in this years draft that an organization was hanging their hat on. Thats why Flynn, went to Oakland, Smith went to Arizona, Buffalo passed on EJ, and Smith, as did the Jets, not once but twice. The Sanchize was the 5 overall for a reason. When you are an allegedly QB needy team, and say, that a CB, and a DL, are higher RATED on your board, it means the guy you didnt pick, just wasnt worth it. Personally, i was split between EJ and Smith, but all things being equal, i would have taken the bigger guy. But, imho...Smith is going to be a very good player. Is he the today guy? All thing considered, no. And if the Jets were moving on, they arent rolling the dice that another team leaves them replacing Sanchez with Nassib, or Barkley.
Guys get old fast, we had a pretty young team up until around last year. We had a 4-5 year window to win and we failed, we came close but we failed.
And you don't waste a high second round pick on a QB unless you you are fed up with the incumbent. Again, unless of course you don't think the Jets had any greater needs than a backup QB.
Hobbes you aren't even talking about the same game we are. Please stop flooding the forum with your bullshit and do a little bit of reading.
