Geno might be making $1.5M. More likely something like $1.25M or so. Last two contracts for early 2nd round rookie QB's were both in 2011. Andy Dalton 4 yrs/$5.2M and Colin Kaepernick 4 yrs/$5.12M. They were picked 35 and 36 in 2011. I'd guess that Geno might get a similar contract after being picked at 39 this year. It'd be more than the slot paid a QB potentially in 2011 but two years have gone by. As a comparison, Brock Osweiler was taken 57th last year and his deal is 4 yrs/$3.52M.
If he doesn't give one hell of a reason to keep him thats exactly whats going to happen. Mediocre won't do it, just alright won't do it. playoffs or GTFO, unless its just one of those years where 10-6 misses the playoffs or something. (which in this AFC it shouldn't) if he goes 3 games under 500 at any point after september, he's done.
If Sanchez is QBing probably both. Rex needs to do an image remake this season. One part of that image remake is to get people past the perception that he's overly loyal to "his" guys. Head coaches can't have "their guys" unless those players are among the best on the field. You can't show favoritism to a player who is not getting the job done and retain the respect of the locker room. The Jets were 8-5 in 2010 and then lost 3 straight winnable games at the end of the season. They were 6-7 last year and then boom, right down the chutes. Rex needs to figure out why his teams are quitting at the end of the year and he needs to do that this year. Part of the problem has been the age of the roster in certain key areas. Rex has had older players slowing down by mid-season the last few years, some of them key players. The QB play has been a huge part of the problem also. Sanchez has just blown chunks down the stretch the last couple of years. It's hard for a team to stay on target when the QB can't.
3 years. Smiths deal will be for four. Look, if the Jets make the playoffs, you are probably mot moving from Sanchez. Now, thats a big if. But the bottom line is, if Sanchez can be rehabbed, and they go back to being a very competitive team, theyre not going to sabotage good fortune.
If Sanchez plays the way he did in 2009 and 2010 and the Jets somehow make the playoffs he's still going to be gone shortly. He's going to have to be really good for the Jets to hang on to him at this point. Even if he's efficient that's not going to be enough. He's going to have to be one of the big reasons the team is winning, and not in a "Mark is not making many mistakes" way either.
Becaise Geno will be making backup money, Sanchez would be making mediocre money for a playoff winning QB, especially of he starts playing well under Morningwood, and theres no third option. Look, if Sanchez plays like shit, hes gone. Fact. If he doesnt, you are set at QB, for a decade. And there is no third guy, that you can put behind Smith that keeps the team as viable as it will be, if Sanchez can be fixed. Which obviously I think will happen.
That was exactly the point. If Sanchez starts, plays just ok, and the Jets are 5-4 or 4-5 at the bye. Does Smith start after the bye?
Sanchez has to put up 2011 scores, drop several ints, and dramatically reduce the fumbles. He was 26,18 plus 6,8. If he can put up 30-32 scores, and less than 18 turnovers, and get north of 60%, hes safe. Anything less than that is going to be debatable, unless they go deep into the playoffs.
He has to be a driver not a manager. It really comes down to that. The reason Alex Smith is no longer with the 49ers is that he couldn't run the offense that Harbaugh wanted to run. He was very efficient and didn't make many mistakes but he was in the way of the 49ers installing the offense they wanted to run. Sanchez is going to have to run Marty M's WCO at close to full throttle if he wants to keep his job. If he's just managing events and avoiding problems he's going to give way to Geno Smith sooner rather than later.
Sanchez would have to play at a near elite level in order to keep his job beyond 2013. If he is average or doing just enough to get by that is no reason to keep Sanchez. IMO if Geno plays well in preseason then he should start. Let him get his experience.
Well I was just talking Sanchez. thats... a good question. its entirely circumstantial. say he won 4 games: did he win his first 4 then lose every other horribly? Has he struggled consistently only to be saved by a great running game and defense? Has he played well but defensive lapses make his efforts in vain? If he won 5 games than thats two wins over harder opponents, how did he pull that off? It has a lot to do with his momentum, if he's a handicap I think we can see him gone (though with perhaps better trade value than if he didn't start at all) but if he's been an improved asset... keep him going. None of this means he stays with the team though.
If he wins 4, he stays at starter. If he imposes his will and acts like a QB instead of a game manager turnover machine with 4 wins, he stays. The schedule softens up after the bye, so it will make for a good playoff push
Like you sad, it depends on why we lose. If Howard blows out a knee, and we have yeat a third consecutive year of no roght tackle, do you really think, they are going to say, "Hey, lets get Smith hurt!" If the RT or LT gets hurt (or probably any lineman) Smirh immediately becomes the third string QB, until someone can be broughti in, and worked in.
He's going to win 3, in four weeks. I think it depends, like Bway said, if he embraces the offense and becomes the dynamic player that has shown up in flashes over the firstt four years. Winning will keep him here, this year regardless. A playoff run, thru next year, but even the penultimate victory, will not keep him here thru the end of the contract. Id be surprised if he saw the end of his current contract without a Ring. The play for the Jets is to get Sanchez successful and get to year four of Genos contract, without him seeing time on the field, extend him...then transition. Sanchez will stil be cheap by real starter standards. The worst thing team wise, is to build a winning team, and have Geno jump in ride that and cash in for real money.
LOLOL you are certainly in love with him. It won't be surprising at all, because he most likely will not be starting this year
Quarterbacks don't play against each other. It's not a freaking throwing contest. Is he better than Tampa Bay's defense? New England? Buffalo? Tennessee? THAT'S who he will be playing against, not Freeman, Brady, Kolb/Mauel, and Locker
