But I fall more on the punishment over rehabilitation side of things, depending on the type of crime at least. Committing fraud or petty theft is one thing but rapists and murders shouldn't be watching Seinfeld re-runs, laughing and joking around.

Miami never had even close to 50 arrests in a 7 year period, nor were they ever implicated in covering up murders. Yes, Miami wore fatigues and danced, and had a player say he was a "fucking soldier", and like all programs had arrests over the years, and were in general the first team to flaunt urban blacks. But FIFTY ARRESTS in 7 years? Unprecedented. By far the worst I can recall. Miami, FSU, Bama, USC, never even remotely approached that level. Look it up. And every major incident involving a big name player, UF lawyers stepped in and the problem went away.

While Miami's bad guy rep started with the Jimmy Johnson era (the fatigues, the 58-7 win at the OB win vs. over-his-head Gerry Faust), it was really during Dennis Ericsson's tenure that the program took a dive credibility-wise and the NCAA sanctions (Pell Grant violations, etc.) were testiment to that, his winning record/titles aside.
Tim Teboleone? Nebraska was much dirtier than Miami ever was but Tom Osburne had a nice Midwest clean cut look to him so people never really got on his case. Lawrenece Phillips, the Peter brothers, among other things. He sold his soul to win a few national titles. Lawrence Phillips might be one of the biggest pieces of shit to ever play for a high profile team and Osburne turned a blind eye to everything he did. The guy beat the hell out of his girlfriend and Osburne essentially did nothing to punish him, ironically the Huskers beat the hell out of Florida to win the national title in which Phillips was the big reason they won. The issue is there is no discourse from the NCAA when it comes to punishing schools for having criminals on their team. I read something that says not one of the big 3 schools in Florida do a criminal background check on their players nor in the case of many schools no punishment for any athlete arrested. Janoris Jenkins said it best when Will Muchamp kicked him off the team at Florida, if Myer was still the coach it would have been business as usual. College football is big business and like most other things in this country we are willing to turn a blind eye if you are succesful. I received a lot of heat from fans of my alma mater when I said they should have kicked the starting PG off the team after he choked his girlfriend. He was suspended for 3 games, one of which was an exhibition game. The way I look at it you are more than just a basketball player, you are representing my university and being on scholarship is a privelage not a right and when you choke your girlfriend you should lose that privelage.
