I just feel like if footwork is the thing you are struggling with most, then that is a really good sign.. Footwork can be coached and can be learned quickly. I'm glad we aren't hearing reports about him struggling with accuracy or release speed.. Those things are much harder to learn especially once you get to this level.

With articles like this from his coach and comments from Mangold that Smitty just ain't ready, it would be funny if Rex goes with Smitty opening day as a rookie. Wonder if Smitty takes the Jets to the AFC Championship Game! He could. It has been done before.

You really need to stop making every thread about Sanchez. Keep it in the Sanchez thread or there will be consequences.

It was refreshing for Mangold to go on the record about the state of the QB competition from his point of view. It did remind us though about why having two starting caliber QB's is worse than having one starting caliber QB.

The thing to remember about this year is that it's not about winning it all. The odds on that happening are very, very low. It's about figuring out the QB position and getting off the treadmill the Jets have been on since Chad's second injury.

Winning 5 or 6 games with Smith showing promise is a better result for the team long-term than winning 7 or 8 with Sanchez doing the same old stuff. Avoiding a catastrophic season is a different story. If the difference between Smith and Sanchez is 3-13 vs 6-10 then by all means start Sanchez.

I disagree that having two starting quality QBs is a bad thing. Most winning QBs in the NFL are not simply born, they are developed over years. The Jets should be adding a new QB to the team every single season and developing the entire stable, so that if we ever end up in an emergency situation where the three needs to start due to injury, there is no drop off schematically. Its about the team, not the individual QB. When you put all your eggs in one basket, you will inevitably fall flat on your face. If Tom Brady goes down, the Patriots will barely miss a beat with Mallet stepping in.

its ok that g.s. isn't ready. he is a second round pick.if he was able to step right in he would have went in the top 5-10. it sounds like the problem occurs when they install new plays. unless i read that wrong. if thats the case we should be optimistic about his future. reptitions will cure his problems and we could end up with a real wepon at qb

I actually agree with you on having a stable of QB's available. I didn't communicate the idea particularly well in the post above. What I meant to say is that this is why it's bad to have two QB's very close in immediate potential on the roster.

The fact that Sanchez could not separate significantly from Smith despite Smith apparently not being ready to go yet has left the Jets in the awkward position of having two guys that you could argue for starting at QB.

That's the situation you don't want to have.

Having two talented guys at QB with one of them clearly better than the other and starting as a result is not an issue. It's when you have two guys who for various reasons cannot make a clear claim for the starting job that you wind up with difficulties.

The Jets have a tough row to hoe at QB right now. Hopefully one of the two makes a clear claim on the job in camp. If Sanchez starts because Smith is not ready we're likely to be distressed by his results.

Put another way: if you think having Tebow on the roster last year dicked with Sanchez head and caused some of his issues you have to be thinking that having the future on the sidelines just waiting for him to screw up is going to destroy him.

That makes sense. The competition doesn't seem to be upwards but rather a battle of who is less bad right now.

There's a very good chance that Sanchez is already mentally shot. If that is the case then he's simply a custodian until Geno is ready. The only reason I don't necessarily think that is what is actually happening is because it would be equivalent to Rex just laying down and waiting to die as a coach, and I really don't see that happening.

Here's a rough tree of Rex's options at QB this year:

    1. Goes with Sanchez - best chance to win.

    a) Jets win enough games for him to keep his job.

    b) Jets don't win very many games - Rex gets fired.

    2. Goes with Smith - developing the future.

    a) Jets win enough games for him to keep his job.

    b) Jets don't win very many games - Rex is on the hot seat and maybe fired.

I don't see any scenario short of a Jets late season collapse where Rex gets fired this year if he goes with Geno Smith.

I don't see any scenario short of 8 or 9 wins where Rex retains his job if he goes with Mark Sanchez.

In the long run the best thing that could happen for the Jets this year is that Sanchez comes out of camp firing bullets and Smith can't get on the field because Sanchez is playing lights out.

Every other scenario seems more favorable with Smith on the field.

The least favorable scenario is the Jets suck with Sanchez sucking. That's the "oops, this rebuild is going to take longer than we thought" scenario.

What's absolutely sickening is that a 5th year veteran starter can't separate from a rookie who isn't ready.

I REALLY hope Geno becomes our guy, because it's gonna be a long, terrible season if we have to suffer through Intchez without any hope for the future.

This might come down to pre-season games, I know they said they wanted it settled early but I don't think that is going to happen considering there isn't an obvious choice at this point. Which looks worse on Sanchez than it does good on Geno IMO

I think unless Geno completely seperates himself to the point where it would be insulting not to start him that Sanchez will get the start for week 1. Will he still be the starter by week 10? 12? I'm not so sure. But that might actually be better for us in the long run. Give Geno some more time and then put him in when the pressure is off if we're already in a losing season. We can at least see what he's capable in the NFL to see if he can be a starter or not and proceed accordingly.

On the flip side if Sanchez has an amazing year and we have a winning season then we can maybe evaluate if he just had a rough couple of years and is capable of being a starter and have Geno be a potentially solid backup.

Whereas if it's close and they go with Geno and he struggles do they go back to Sanchez? I don't think they can at that point. All the perssure would be on Geno and it could mess up his development. If he plays lights out and proves himself a starter then that's great, ideal even and we can cut Sanchez in the offseason. No real harm or foul. But that's kind of a gamble.

I assume you work for the Jets or maybe are related to one of the players since you have such authoritative insider information as to how little Sanchez is separating himself from Smith?

If Geno struggles, he struggles. He's going to have no pressure. You know why? BECAUSE HE'S A ROOKIE. If he plays like an NFL caliber QB and we lose games, nobody is going to call for his head. Your avatar belies who you truly want to start though...

Sanchez was a rookie who played a full season on a team that got to an AFC championship, then did the same thing again in the sophomore campaign, and people still felt Sanchez is the antichrist.

What people think of Geno as a rookie really doesn't matter. What matters is whether or not the Jets have a real development plan for him, whether they intend to ever actually put any talent around him, and whether they do these things consistently or whimsically like Tannenbaum did.

    Haters gonna hate.

I think the point is that cooler heads will prevail when it comes to judging Smith.

Should he start he'll get his rookie mulligans as it were, particularly by John.I and the coaches.

They won't pull him out if he struggles (unless its that damn bad) unlike with Sanchez who should he falter enough times is officially done and will be replaced by Smith.

I see this the other way around. If the Jets want Sanchez available as a pressure valve to sit Smith down when he is struggling then they need to start Smith and not Sanchez at the beginning of the year.

That makes the replacements manageable when they need to happen because Sanchez knows he's coming right back out as soon as Smith's head is back where it needs to be. It makes the replacements acceptable for the fans because they have not already booed Sanchez off the field for the season early on.

Starting Sanchez until he fails and then going to Smith leaves the Jets in the unenviable position of having to stay with Smith through whatever transpires after the fact. Putting Sanchez back in at that point just rubs everybody the wrong way.

A team really cannot afford to have two starting QB's, particularly when one of them is a rookie. It causes too much havoc in the locker room and in the fan base and in the media.

The last thing the Jets want to have happen this season is for a multi-front war to develop on who the starting QB should be.

According to Mangold, and Holmes...there isnt one in the locker room.

No one gives a fuck about the media..,except,

Fans that think the media, and fan perspective shapes rosters.

If that was true, Tebow would be starting in Jacksonville.

    Such a well constructed argument.

    What thought process?

Mangold, and Holmes agree with ne.

You insisted repeatedly that sanchez would be cut, June 1 even after it was explained ad nauseum.

    Yeah, I'm the idiot.

Please change your shorts, the other third graders will smell you pissing on yourself.

Please, enlighten me with your facts and Ill apologize. Or keep the "facts" to yourself, and let....real life decode.
