Ryan's been the Head coach for 4 full seasons. I thought it would be interesting to just look at the defensive side of the ball and really get in to the deeper metrics, not just points allowed or yards allowed. Those stats do tell a story, but not necessarily the entire story. So in order to dissect each season I'll be looking at a number of factors and statistical categories. All source information is from ESPN.com or Sportingcharts.com, in reality all the stats are from stats inc. which is where both sites draw their information from. First the basics. Points allowed/points per game/rank 2009-236/14.8/#1 2010-304/19.0/#6 2011-363/22.7/#20 2012-375/23.4/#20 On the surface it appears the defense has gotten worse each year in terms of points allowed. But lets dig a little bit deeper. Lets look at opposing teams scoring efficiency. # of drives Defended/Rank/Opp scoring Percentage/Rank (opp scoring percentage is the percentage of drives that resulted in any type of points regardless of starting field position. Drives defended rank is from the most drives defended going downwards, so the #1 team defended against the most drives. 2009-187/#14/20.3/#1 2010-201/#5/27.4/#6 2011-208/#1/30.8/#10 2012-194/#6/30.9/#11 so here we do see that in 2009 the Jets were outstanding at stuffing drives and preventing scores. They slid in the next 3 years, but never out of the top 10. But what you do see is in years 2-4 a marked increase in times on the field, always being on the field more than most other teams In every season and being on the field in the top 6 in 3 seasons. so yes the Jets did give up more points, and yes they were allowing a higher percentage of drives to score points, but even in that regard they were never out of the top 11 in terms of the percentage of drives that turned in to points. But still we don't have the full story, how many of the points the Jets gave up were the results of turnovers often leaving them with short fields? Give away points, these are the number of points surrendered after a turnover, either by the turnover being returned for a TD or a post turnover drive that resulted in points. TTL points given away/Rank/avg number of points per game The higher the rank the better the result. 2009-73/18/4.5 2010-73/15/4.5 2011-119/31/7.4 2012-88/21/5.5 We can see here that turnovers have cost the Jets a substantial amount of points over the course of each season, especially in 2011 Third down efficiency of the opponent? percentage/rank 2009-31.5/#1 2010/37.0/#10 2011-32.7/#3 2012-37.2/#12 it's been a little up and down there, but 3 out of 4 years top 10 and 2 out of 4 were top 5. So what to draw out of this? Overall the Jets defense has been a top 10 unit every year Rex has been here, and top 5 in half the years. And while points allowed has risen every season since 2009 so has the amount of time the defense has spent on the field. But you can also see a direct correlation between how many drives the Jets defense had to defend against and a decline in the peripheral scoring and drive stats. part of that is the defense getting older. But a bigger part, especially for a defense that's growing older, more time on the field means less rest which equates to a tired defense. this can clearly be seen by the number of drives defended and where they ranked in the NFL, in 3 of the 4 years the Jets defense ranked #6 or higher in the number of drives defended. It's also clear from the number of points off of turnovers has never been less than the league average, turnovers kill seasons. yes that includes long "punts". The reality is in all 4 seasons the Jets have had a very good defense, but it's a defense that's been stretched to it's limits by an offense that can't stay on the field and turns the ball over too much. With this defense this team should be a division winner with a competent offense, and I'm not talking sliding in through the backdoor.
Right. And a competent offense, starts in The OCs office. Period. So many of you guys seem to have short memories, since the OC argument has been made since Pennington was under center. This team has no business, not winning 10, every year. (except last year, every team hits the injury bug somewhere along the line) They should have won at least 11 in 11. And 8 or 9 last year.
Same tired argument, but anyone knows that good play begins and ends on the field. Doesn't matter what you call as a coach if they guy can't take care of the ball.
The same tired argument, is you taking Half a page, to say, to quote Zach.... "waaaah, waaah, its all Sanchez fault" Bullshit. Rex is a great DC. Hence, we have a good defense. But on the other side of the ball, its just the guys on the field. Right. If you cant see how ridiculous what you just said was, its because tour hate has blinded you.
I felt the only thing we lacked in 2011 and 2012 was a efficient pass rush. Our player's - especially our secondary - at least it looked like. We were old and slow, and it made us the WORST at keeping up with the No huddle the Patriots constantly put on us... hopefully that will change now. when the rookies catch on we will be VERY dominate. i believe the top D - line in football. and to compliment it a decent secondary.
I would really like to know what our defense would be ranked without all the Sanchez mistakes giving the other team TDs. Definately felt like a handful of them say year. Add to that the Special Teams mistakes, it would really be an interesting stat. That why I like to go by yards, especially for the Jets. Also it would be cool to see a stat about where in average the Jets defense started their drives against the other teams.
This raises the question, is it better to have an outstanding DC making mistakes as your HC, or having a better HC and losing the dominant DC? When people call for Rexs head, it's not like we can just demote him to DC, we lose him. Could he be better on game day with clock management and situational decisions? Of course. But I would choose those faults with that defensive mind over most HCs any day.
That has to be to be the stupidest suggestion since, Rappers were suggested to make rock albums, in other words.... WHAT business does our D's stats have in the Sanchez thread ?
Because it's simply a weakly veiled dig at Sanchez. We get it, 1968 hates Sanchez. Starting a thread about how good Rex's defense is becuase our offense sucks--without mentioning how badly Sanchez sucks, is pure sophistry. _
But no one else really see's it as that.. now if he was to simply go out on a limb and say "this is the defensive stats and they are this way because of Sanchez "then ok,i see your point.... but this isn't the case.
My apologies you can't detect the blatant transparency in this thread. Please, enjoy the charade. Besides, the Sanchez sucks thread was getting too unweildly. _
Transparency.. ? it seems instead of the subliminal hatred for Sanchez.. you have a bit of hatred for 1968
