I don't understand why they would be inclined to call it early, if Sanchez was to be the starter. They already know what he has and can do. But Geno being a rookie, he'd be expected to improve as he gets more familiar, so the further he goes in, the better he should be. So if Geno is behind now, you would expect that he would be more caught up as time goes on in the preseason, so not sure why they would get it out of the way early if Geno was indeed behind. Ryan seemed impressed with Geno's handle on the system during the rookie mini-camp and he seemed like he was grasping the system. All reports indicated that his throws looked fine and had zip on them. I'd be surprised if Geno wasn't the leader right now. I'm obviously not a big believer in Sanchez, as I made evident in the Sanchez thread, mainly because he has no clear skill that can threaten the defense. Lack of accuracy, lack of mobility, lack of field vision and decisiveness holds back the offense. Injury risks are always prevalent, so no point in holding Smith back because of it.
Anyone wanting Sanchez to ruin another season is an idiot (will all due respect). Sanchez has proven he is terrible. There is no valid reason not to start Geno, none. The Jets would have to be the dumbest franchise in the NFL to trot buttfumble out there week 1.
Seriously anyone wanting Sanchez to start didn't see him play last year. If you don't think Geno is ready you should want to start Greg or Matt, hell start the peanut sales man over the buttfumble. Last year we were begging for a replacement and now that we have the best rookie QB people want the butt fumble back? Doesn't make sense
Sanchez will probably get one more shot, but its hard to see him taking it and running with it with the lack of talent on this team. He knows this his last shot though, which can tend to cause guys to reach the next level of competency if they ever will. We'll see what happens, but don't think for one second this season is only about Geno. Geno is the motivating force and the safety net wild card for one last try with Sanchez, to see if with his job on the line he can turn it on. If he's shitting the bed by week 3-4, he's done. Geno in. But this team will not throw away a multi-million dollar investment without giving it every chance to come through simply because he's not popular with the fans.
easy tough guy....I can see though why u would feel this way because you are probably not ready to take ur sanchez posters off the wall quite yet...but the quicker u realize you will be buying geno smith posters sooner than later the better off you will be : )
Don't let your hate of Sanchez cloud your judgement. You sound as if this season has a playoff run in it. It certainly doesn't. You want to throw away $8.5mil dollars because you hate Sanchez. Illogical. Sanchez has proven he can be terrible, he has also proven he can win under the right circumstances. Only a idiot would burn $8.5 million because of some illogical emotional hatred. Only the dumbest franchise in the NFL would make an decision like this emotionally. Thank God you're not the GM throwing away Woody's cash. Get used to the fact that Sanchez's contract precludes him from going anywhere. Woody isn't gonna let $8.5million rot on the bench either so chances are pretty good that unless Sanchez really fcks up TC, he'll be the starter opening day. Ever hear the term ROI? It means we need to get something back for Sanchez even if its a low round DP. We got nothing for Tebow and if we fck this up, we'll get nothing for Sanchez and that means his remaining dollars will simply be flushed down the drain. Maybe as a fan, you can live with it since it isn't your money but Woody isn't about to burn that much cash on some bullshit.
The reason you don't start Geno is if he isn't mentally ready. You run the risk of ruining him if you start him too early. I like his talents but he definitely has some things he needs to work on.
It is.. Optimistic for once.. Anyway, I would like to think there's a way to recoup some of what is still owed him in the form of a late DP or some salary relief should we find a trade partner. If Sanchez has a good season, and I don't think it has to be a great season, there will be more of a market for Sanchez than there was for Tebow and the Jets could capitalize on that. I can see them showcasing Sanchez for the first half of the upcoming season in the hopes of finding a willing taker in some form of a trade. Sanchez has as much skin in this as the team has as this might be his last chance to salvage his career in the NFL. I think Sanchez just might have the good season he used to be capable of several years ago. If that happens, and I agree it's a big assed IF, you have to think there's a team out there someplace (Jacksonville?) that could use him and would be willing to trade.
To be fair though, we have to pay the guy whether he sits or not. The known quantity with Sanchez is that he doesn't have any upside that is desirable to most NFL franchises. When he has a beast defense, O-line, running game, WR corp, he is at best mediocre. Those were the right circumstances. Obviously, we have nowhere close to anything like that on our roster. It is more likely that he becomes even worse. Is starting him in hopes for a 6th or 7th round pick really in the best interest for the Jets? Geno has a LOT more upside than Sanchez. He could suck, but I consider that unlikely. Starting Geno would be the best thing for this franchise. We don't want to find out if we have a franchise QB when we're playing non-pressure games (which is what you implied in a previous post). A franchise QB takes this team to 8-8 or 9-7. Geno does that, we will be good to go for the immediate and long-term future.
Agreed. There's no hidden agenda or code to be broken ..... its simple, whoever plays better in OTA's and into training camp wins the job.....and the sooner its decided the better. Good article. Sanchez pushed me over the edge last year Ill admit, but I think the odds are 60-40 he wins the starting position to begin this season.....and if he starts to regress then you bring in Mcelroy or Smith, whoever is #2. Best case scenario is whoever starts wins games for the Jets. Personally I rather it be Geno since he is younger and appears to have more upside ..... but if its Sanchez or Mcelroy Im fine as long as they're winning. Sent from my LG-P999
I'm not saying start Sanchez for the entire season. I would say at most, thru the toughest part of the schedule which is the first half of it. I'm all for giving Geno significant playing time but I don't think I'd start him against Pitt or Bal or any tier 1 defense at this point. Why not let Sanchez take the pounding instead? If nothing else, he'll be earning his paycheck while protecting our investment in the future.
That is true. Only problem is Sanchez is too durable. But, I'd like to see what Geno and MM can do against those tier one defenses. The threshold is low. Geno doesn't need to win every game. He just needs to win four games before the bye. That's it. Four. Geno does that, we have a greater than 50 percent chance of making the playoffs.

Right. There it is in a nutshell. The deinition of a Genoballwasher. Sanchez is too durable, and Im afraid we wont get him off the field. (as if benching him isnt an option.) The simple fact is, with Sanchez, the jets beat Tampon Bay at home...NE? Rex and Sanchez have done it before...and with a Thirsday night game no time to prepare for the New offense.. 40% chance, then Buffalo. And we all know...if Sanchez goes 2-1, or GOD FORBID, 3-0, and sniffs 60% completion and QB rating over 85... ...Geno sits, until next year or injury.
Buffalo, Tennessee, Tampa Bay, New England (not much time for either team to prepare for Thursday night).
See above. Sanchez probably gets 3 out of the first four, but the thread will say it was because Freman,Manuel, and Locker got outplayed by the Jets defense. And...given the situational variables, regarding NE...stealing that game os a possibility.
What makes you so confident that Sanchez can even approach those numbers? He has never hit 60 percent in his entire career. I can call you a Sanchez ballwasher and you'll probably whine about how mean I am to you.
