Of course, that horrible defense that that terrible defensive coach Rex Ryan devised caused the brilliant offense devised by Brian Schottenheimer to miss out on the Super Bowl. It couldn't be any clearer.
yep, the D that blew a double digit lead and allowed an all time choking QB to score 30 pts on them(it could have been more if they weren't trying to run clock late) and then allowing Pitt to dominate them a year later was all on the offense.
I'm glad you finally see the light. You've been stuck on the Jet's offense as the main problem on the team for a looooong time now. Defending Schotty and Sanchez tirelessly when it was clear to almost everybody else that they were the problems.
Clearly the D was the best we have seen in the NFL since the '85 Bears, all the blown leads, failing to show in the title games- that was all the O's fault.. They carried us so far. The O never scored so it was amazing what the incredible D was able to do.
To me schotty was promoted to quickly and was never a great coordinator. He was/is average to good but not the right person to develop a young QB. To his credit he is better than Sparano.
In 2009 the Jets offense averaged 21.8 points per game #17 in the NFL. In 2009 the Jets defense/ST/turnovers averaged 14.8 points per game, #1 in the NFL. In the 2009 playoffs, the Jets offense averaged 19.33 points per game, below the season average. 19.33 ppg would put the Jets O as the 22nd best in the 2009 season. In the 2009 playoffs, the Jets defense averaged 19.33 points per game, above their season average. 19.33 ppg would put the Jets D as the 10 best in the 2009 season. Hard to blame the D when they would still be top 10 while the offense performed at a below average level. In 2010 the Jets offense averaged 22.9 points per game #13 in the NFL. In 2010 the Jets defense/ST/turnovers averaged 19.0 points per game, #6 in the NFL. In the 2010 playoffs, the Jets offense averaged 20.33 points per game, below their season average. 20.33 ppg would put the Jets O as the 22nd best in the 2010 season. In the 2010 playoffs, the Jets defense averaged 18 points per game, below their season average. 18 ppg would put the Jets D as the tied for 5th best in the NFL. So again the D played top 5 level, the offense below average. Granted I'm not saying the offense is to blame, just point out blaming the defense in the playoffs for losing is kind of misleading. The offense and defense and special teams are to blame for losses and wins, but I think it's misleading to blame the D for not making the SB. Who knows if we get to the champ game if we don't hold the Chargers or Colts to 14 and 16 points? The playoffs showed the problem with the team, inconsistency. In the 2 AFC Championship appearances the Jets offense over 5 quarters scored -4 points for the team (3 on a field -7 on a fumble for 6 the other way. 1st, 3rd, 4th Q @IND and the 1st and 2nd Q @PIT). In the other 3 quarters the Jets offense scored 31 points.
In 2009 the defense blew multiple leads in the reg season and a double digit lead in the AFC Championship game where they were thrashed In 2010 the D blew numerous late leads then got run all over in the title game. Most offenses score less in postseason, to be right around our reg eason # is pretty damn good. I don't think a Peyton led offense has ever scored as much in postseason as the reg season. The bottom line is we scored enough and didn't turn it over much in postseason. The D was thrashed by a choker in '09 then allowed Pitt to run all over us in 2010. W/ all that said obviously we don't make it as far as we did w/o the D playing like they did but we missed out on 2 SB trips b/c the D didn't step up in title games.
In 2009 and 2010 the defense also kept games close only to get nothing back from the offense. It goes both ways. In 2010 the Jets lost games where the defense held teams to 10, 9, and 10 points. It was give and take. We lost a game in 09 giving up 10 points to the Saints. 16 to Buffalo. 10 to Atlanta. We also have lost games where the offense shows up and the defense plays badly. Again, still think it's misleading to act like the offense stepped up while the defense didn't. The offense scored 17 and 17 (10 net) in the title games. The offense and defense didn't step up. I don't think it's possible to single out either unit for the loss. They both underperformed in the title games. Couldn't get a complete game for either unit in the title games They couldn't show up at the same time. Oh and ST wasn't anything to write home about especially in the first title game. Really didn't play a good game all around for the team in either title game. No unit was letting the other down really, no unit could hold up their end of the bargain.
NO & Buf? Mark Sanchez's fault w/o a doubt. The Atl game even though we didn't score much the D had a chance to close it out and they failed. That;'s why they were never a true big time D, a true big time D smothers the opponent and doesn't give them a chance. In '09 we had a double digit lead and remember we did miss 2 FGs. In '10 we came back from 24-0 down and pulled w/in 5 but the D couldn't give the O a chance to finish the comeback. They were team losses but we relied much more on the D so when they fail it hurts more. Many times postseason games are grinding games, you don't see too many shootouts and our O was good enough o win w/. We had the talent and coaching on D that should have been able to pull off at least one of those games. I can't believe how far we have fallen in just 2 years, 2 years ago we were coming off 2 title game apps and no we are at least a couple year away(barring something crazy) from being able to compete at that level again.
It is such a dumbass argument to say things like " the O scored enough" because that statement implies that the O scored enough with regards to how much the D allowed. As if the offense is just sitting there not scoring because the D is not letting points. Only an average fan would think that the O is not trying to score on every drive and judging the O that way.
That's what happens in the NFL with bad luck and the team being built wrong. The Jets made some bad draft picks and signings but also ran into the final four rules which hindered them. Their younger players didn't progress as expected and with the lack of picks it suffered. It's very hard to keep on going to the playoffs year after year. You need both a great QB and a great team around him. Obviously hitting on them at the same time are rare, but the great franchises have that team ready for the QB so they are relatively successful without a great QB. You can fall quickly, but you can also rise quickly in the NFL
do you ever bring any info to a discussion or do you just whine like a school girl every time? we know the answer. Try actually bringing info for a change. People forget about the FF rules not to mention that was the first year where draft order was based on playoff results. we would have been drafting in the middle of the rounds instead of the end for both years if we had the rules prior to the 2010 draft.
We know junc, anybody to blame but nacho for our AFC championship losses. You do remember that nacho gave away the points that ended up being the difference? The defense scored that game as well. The defense allowed 17 points, while our offense managed 17 and nacho personally gave Pittsburgh 7! And the defense is to blame? Get real. I thought you were more than some average fan who can't see the game? The Indy loss is way more on the offense and its inability to score, rather than the defense which was obviously a couple players away in the secondary to be able to beat manning. Our only hope that year was to s core enough points to win, cause the manning led offense scored a lot, usually on any defense. We didn't win a Super Bowl in either year because of inept Qb play. Reality will set in on you and Hobbes when we have an average to above average Qb under center. Give Geno the #1 ranked run offense, #1 ranked defense, and a very good special teams and I bet he plays better than nacho has.
If Tom Moore had been available prior to 2011, we win both VLTs. Moore gets brought in as a consultant for the Red zone offense, and ...viola...its magic...sanchez accrues a 92 QB rating, and scores 32 times. Yeah, the OC has nothing to do with the offense sucking, thats why Schotty is gone, and Sparano, is no longer even an OC.
I disagree w/ you there, we lost both title games b/c of the defense and even when Moore had Peyton he only made 2 SBs.
Unfortunately luck had nothing to do with our fall sucks. The Jets FO priorities were way out of wack in my opinion. I feel we make the playoffs in 2011 if we don't chase Nnamdi and bring back the players that got us to the AFCCG. Then Tebow comes along...
A tad better on offense, would have resulted kn a more balanced team.....7 points here, a couple more FGs there, maybe we win those games directly, maybe win a few more during the season, and have a better trip through the playoffs.
