Can't we just forget about him at this point? On draft day, he was way up there on everyone's board. Unfortunately we were in position to to draft him. There weren't a lot of complaints at the time.
What went wrong was the Jets were trapped on the pick, with nobody else worth the 6 pick and nobody willing to trade up for it because nobody else was worth the 6 pick. The only way the Jets get out of that trap is to take somebody not considered worth of the pick. Given Mike Tannenbaum's preferences in terms of trading up for quality it's hard to imagine him taking somebody he did not think worthy of the pick. I hold some of the decisions Tannenbaum made against him but not the Gholston pick. It was a crappy situation and what you do in those is to rely on your scouts and HC and hold your nose and make the pick.
well i would assume the op and most of the 24 people who responded to the thread care about talking about it. are we not allowed to talk about things in the past at this point? it is the off season after all and lets face it i think we have talked sanchez and geno smith to fucking death. there wasnt a problem when we talked about guys in teh past, whether it was curtis martin or wayne chrebet.
I agree with this evaluation and I think there is real caveat for teams who "win the draft". Its all based on what rounds you take certain players and getting the best value based on the projected picks of these players. The problem was the enough of these GMs held high value for Gholston because the combine and the draft gurus like Kiper pumped up the guys value.
I am glad there are a few on here that stated what I have believed since the moment Gholston was drafted: Tanny and Mangini were afraid of New England taking him. Let's be honest, if the 49ers had the pick behind us instead of the Pats, you don't worry if the 49ers take him because you may see him once every few years in the regular season and at the very least, once in the Super Bowl. If he wrecks havoc on you in your regular season game with the 49ers, big deal, it is just one game. If he goes to NE, you see him at a minimum of twice a year, more than like 3 times a year. Jets fans never would have let Tanny and Mangini live that one down; "How could you pass on Gholston and let him wreck havoc on us for the Patriots?" In that draft, once DE Chris Long, QB Matt Ryan, and RB Darren McFadden were off the board, the Jets should have done the same thing that NE did, and this is where I disagree with a few of the posts about no one wanting to trade up: Trade #6 overall to New Orleans for their 1st rounder and a 3rd round pick, let them take DT Sedrick Ellis like they wanted, and then draft someone in the #10 or #11 range (can't remember what pick NO had at the time).
Yep. The NFL had inflated expectations for Gholston despite the naysayers and there were more than a few of those. I agree with most of this. I don't think there was a deal to be made on the 6 though unless the Jets gave up a lot of value to drop down and that would have looked really bad in combination with the Jets moving up as often as they did. Basically you have to honor the draft and Tannenbaum and Bradway didn't do this all that often but when they did they often got screwed by the choices they made (Bryan Thomas and Gholston standing out in this regard.)
It says a lot about Gholston that, when even everyone was saying he was a potential bust, he still didn't appear to give a fuck. We've heard a lot about players with "no heart for football" (Gholston, Coples etc.) but I don't understand the mentality of a guy that doesn't seem to want to show the critics they are wrong.
Besides Sanchez the worst QB we drafted was Eric Ainge. Selecting Ainge and Gholston in the same draft made that the worst draft experience ever for me as a jets fan. Mangini deserved to be fired after that debacle.
This guy was probably the worst football player I have ever seen in the NFL, regardless of draft position. Ever! No, that is not an exaggeration. The man did not have one iota of football skill in his entire bulging body. Amazes me to this day that scouts could miss the minor detail.
i didnt realize that he was signed by the bears after we cut him and lasted with them only a month. then he was signed by the rams the next year and lasted only 10 fucking days. there was nothing about where he is now though. im beginning to be interested in what happened to old vernon. hopefully he invested his money and made a shit ton on the market rebound.
Steroids. He apparently could get away with taking them in college but not in the NFL. Look at pics of him at OSU vs. in the NFL and it's perfectly clear.
