I was thinking of this the other day and was wondering if there was a bracket style tournament to determine which QB was the biggest bust of all time who would win? The rules are pretty simple , guy had to be a 1st round draft pick, and must have been drafted after 1980. I don't know enough about the draft and bust QB's prior to then. We woudl then seed the QB's based on bust factor and vote on the matchups. For example The PAC 12 (10) Bracket #1 Ryan Leaf vs #8 Mark Sanchez #4 Joey Harrington vs #5 Matt Lienart #3 Akili Smith vs #6 Kyle Boller #2 Todd Marinovich vs #7 Cade McNown Obviously you can move things around as Marinovich and Leaf should both be #1 seeds and scary to think that Sanchez is probably the best of those guys. Tony Eason despite starting the SB would probably be on here as well. I'd like to think we can get at least 32 names and if we can go bigger we could always do that as well. Once we have 32 names we can let the tournament begin. I tink Leaf will win but it would be interesting to see who the Final 4 were.
I'll just throw some names on the list Dan McGwire 16th overall pick in 1991 career TD-INT 2-6 745 total passing yards JP Lossman 22nd overall pick in 2004 Patrick Ramsey 32nd overall pick in 2002 Art Schlicter (probably the biggest bust ever) 4th overall pick 1982 3 career TD passes Tommy Maddox 25th overall pick in 1992 Vince Young 3rd overall pick in 2006 David Carr #1 overall pick Tim Couch #1 overall pick Kelly Stouffer 6th overall pick in 1987 David Klinger/Andre Ware Heath Shuler #3 overall pick Jim Drunkenmiller #25 overall pick 1998 Rick Mirer #3 overall pick JaMarcus Russell #1 overall pick probably a few more guys that can be thrown on here as well
Jim Drunkenmiller #25 overall pick 1998! Thats one hell of a name - he ought to win something for that alone!
Although probably not in the same bust league as your previous lists... David Klingler Jeff George Todd Blackledge Andre Ware Jack Thompson Kerry Collins Rex Grossman Byron Leftwich Mike Phipps Daunte Culpepper Rich Campbell
you are better than this Miano. No matter what you think of Sanchez he doesn't belong w/ those other names and i'd love to know what world we live in where a guy has played 4 years and has double the playoff victories of any other QB in franchise history yet he's a bust.
I was just making an example. I know there are at least 32 other guys that belong on this list ahead of Sanchez. He has won more playoff games than probably everybody mentioned combined. I don't think Mark is a great QB but in no means would I seriously call him one of the greatest busts of all time. Not when you have guys like Leaf, Couch, Boller, Carr and Akili Smith to compare him to.
The sad thing is, if a bracket like this was put to public vote (like they do with Madden covers), Sanchez would probably make it very, very far
and most people that vote are 14. and that New York teams, for good or for bad, get more coverage than any others. Sanchez wasn't good this past year, but from Sportscenter you'd think he was the worst first-round QB ever. Gabbert and Locker were absolutely awful and you never heard a peep about them because they were in Jacksonville and Tennessee, so who the heck cares? Do they even have cable there?
We've got about 30 or so names. I'd like some more because guys like Sanchez and Jeff George despite not living up to expectations don't belong on the list. They have had moderate succes, I want guys like Ware or Shuler who were dogshit awful.
Jamarcus Russell Brady Quinn Vince Young Matt Leinart JP Losman Kyle Boller David Carr Joey Harrington Tim Couch Akili Smith Cade McNown Ryan Leaf Jim Druckenmiller Heath Shuler Rick Mirer Dave Brown David Klingler Dan McGwire Todd Marinovich Andre Ware Timm Rosenbach Chuck Long Todd Blackledge Art Schlichter
Oh man, Dave Brown... that is priceless. He was terrible. I was at a Giants/Cardinals game when he was the starter for the Cards and fans cheered when he got hurt. Being it was Arizona it is very possible they were Giant fans. In fact I'd be willing to bet it was because there was a shitload of blue in the stands. He gets forgotten a lot as a bust because he was picked in the supplemental draft. To be fair to Rosenbach he was injured in his 3rd year while all of these guys sucked because ... well they sucked. Mark Malone and Tony eason could be on the list as well. Yes Eason started the SB for the Pats but he was pretty terrible outside of that one season.
Brown did lead the Giants to that one 9-7 season in '94 but they booted Simms for him so he probably has to be on this list. Malone and eason did start in title games(both) and a SB(Eason) so they can't be down w/ those others.
So I'm thinking the #1 overall seeds would be Ryan Leaf JaMarcus Russell Art Schlichter Todd Marinovich #2 seeds Rick Mirer Heath Shuler Tim Couch Akili Smith #3 Joey Harrington Dan McGwire David Klingler Andre Ware #4 Chuck Long Todd Blackledge Vince Young Kelly Stoufer
took a team to the playoffs and won a playoff game plus has winning record as starter. No way he is on this list
That just proves that the team record doesn't indicate how good a QB is. The Broncos defense took them to the playoffs, and won that game. Tebow can't even get work in the CFL.
