If Sanchez had issues with Tebow being brought in to be the "backup" then image how he'll play with Smith around who is clearly brought in to take his job.
In my mind, here's Sanchez as an NFL quarterback on a scale of 1-100 with 50 being average. 2009: 15 2010: 45 2011: 40 2012: 20 Entering this season, I had looked at this as somewhat of a make-or-break situation. A lot of QBs break out in their 4th seasons, he had shown flashes of being good, including winning the 4 playoff games. Sanchez was a young QB with very little college experience. I was even making excuses for him early this season, when his weapons were non-existent and not making any plays for him. Then the way his play completely regressed as he lost confidence was hard to watch. The Titans game, the Cardinals game, the Patriots Thanksgiving game, so many awful games down the stretch, it was embarrassing. I'm not against Sanchez winning the job. I think there's a chance he can be a solid NFL quarterback at some point. I don't think it will come with the Jets, but he's got some talent. But at this point, we don't owe him anything. Sanchez has used up all good faith from his playoff victories. He's never been an average NFL QB by the numbers, and Sanchez had a ton of help on those playoff teams. If he wins the job on merit in practice and training camp, then I hope Mark Sanchez is successful this season for the Jets. If Garrard or Geno or McElroy is better, then play one of them.
I think Sanchez needs to be a backup QB for a team with an established veteran QB in place (Rodgers, Eli, Peyton, Brady, Ryan, Brees, Flacco) his experience can actually be valuable because he can step in and play when needed, then maybe down the road he can catch the eye of a team that is looking for a veteran QB to be a stopgap. He needs to have a few years sitting his ass on the bench as a backup and reinvent himself and hope he can get a shot in 3 or 4 years. Because right now he is done.
Vinny was drafted onto a horrible team where they needed him to be the savior. He also had a cannon for an arm, was tough as nails and strong as an ox. That would be a no, a no and a no for Sanchez.
who cares about all this BS Sanchez deserves a 2nd chance, he took us to back to back championship games and beat Manning/Brady/Rivers on the road. If he fails through the first 3 games and is 0-3 bring in Geno to save the day and never look back. Done and done
He's not entitled to any "2nd chances" his 2nd chance was being allowed to start against Jacksonville after his performance against the Cardinals. He's even lucky to be competing for the starting job, on every other team in the league he'd probably be either cut or relegated to strictly backup duty.
he'd be quite the distraction, but that does hold some truth to it. mark needs a more appropriate contract to boot as well. My thinking is these are possibilities for Sanchize this year: 1. The starter route: he wins the competition out right and maintains the job through the season with less turnovers and a more high scoring offense (Completion% be damned) This is the Hobbes/Junc ideal scenario where he's just good enough to get things done under a favorable OC. he would likely be kept aboard for the next season, once again being put in competition with Smith this time with a year riding the pine under his belt. he hasn't earned the right to be trusted as main starter no mater what, unless he's suddenly pro bowl caliber. 2. the Alex Smith route: he wins the competition but gets hurt and Smith outplays him as his replacement. This may well be the best scenario for the Jets organization overall, because they now have two able QB's, and could trade the older of the two who has to be proven effective (just not as much as the young upincomer has) to a QB starved team for a second or another third. 3. The back up route: he loses out to Smith, but isn't poor enough to cut. a bit unlikely but if he can manage to play decently while being below the ability of Smith from the start theres a chance the Jets keep him as a steady and experienced backup to their new franchise QB. the contract for him would also be restructured next season. theres a chance he's traded in tho scenario as well. 4. the wash-up route: proves woefully ineffective and out of it, easily beaten by the other QBs. he's immediately put on the trading block and is more than likely cut from the team at any moment. either way he's on thin ice as of now.
I don't hate Sanchez, I'm sure he has his good side and all. But facts are facts, he's a lousey QB. Even in his best year he was a bottom 1/3 QB who needed a strong defense and running game to succeed. People rave about his 4 playoff wins, but wins are a team stat and he only "carried" the team in one playoff game. The other 3 wins were all well under 200 yards and a total of 2 TD's in the 3 wins. and the only way the Jets made the playoffs those first two years were on the backs of the defense and the Running game. The only thing the Jets needed from Sanchez was not to screw up more than the Defense could compensate for. In 3 of his 4 years he's been near top of the league in the number of turnovers he's comitted. They've won their playoff games by limiting severely what Sanchez was allowed to do. Here's a clue, when you have to limit your QB and keep him on a short list of plays he's allowed to do then your relying on your team and not the QB to win the games.
Based off of his performance level vs the rest of the leagues performance level in terms of QB play. 2009 10 2010 30 2011 25 2012 10. and I'm being generous on my curve here, in reality in 3 of the 4 years he ranked at or near the bottom of all QB's with more than 50 attempts.
The only problem I got is that Sanchez is such a terrible QB what can he possibly teach Geno? That's why I feel like he needs to be a backup to an already established QB like a Big Ben, guys that are proven players in this league, so they can teach him things like how they prepare for games, etc. Geno needs to have a backup that has had experience as a good QB which Garrard is. David can actually teach Geno something and plus David wouldn't be a distraction if he were to lose the starting QB job to Geno.
Good point! That was the same team that Steve Young was awful on the 2 years prior to Vinny being drafted. It's one thing to be bad on a horrible team and another thing to be bad on teams like we have had. If Sanchez can't play well with the teams we had in 2009 and 2010, it is very unlikely that he ever will. Most of us already know this, but the other 3 will find that out soon enough. :breakdance:
All kidding aside, I hope Sanchez invested his money wisely. Because he will soon know the feeling of being like Tebow by not being wanted by another team.
Somebody is going to pick him up as a backup. Nobody is going to look at him as anything more than that though. If he gets another chance to start it's going to be fate that does it, with an untimely injury opening a path for him.
I give him a little bit of credit for staying healthy and staying on the field. Not much credit, but durability is important for quarterbacks.
he's staying till training camp dude, he'd be cut late summer at the earliest if he bombs. The prospect of him being cut June 1st was speculation only, get over it.
Honestly Vinny never was a really good QB, he always threw a lot of Interceptions and seldom had a high completion percentage. But he could get away with it by having a cannon for an arm that allowed him to have a couple of really good seasons. But over all he stands out in Jets history as a QB simply because the Jets have only had 3 good QB's over their 50+ year extistence. Those Being Namath, O'Brien and Chad Pennington before the injuries wiped him out. Sadly the Jets have never had a good QB that's managed to stay healthy and produce for more than 7-10 seasons.
When your performing well below JAG levels the durability becomes a questionmark as to whether it's a good or bad thing for the team
It's true, but I think he was really good in 1998. He was 12-1 as a starter with 29 Tds and only 7 Ints. He helped the Jets win 12 games which has never been done before or since. I know that is more of a tell on how bad we have been as a franchise than how great Vinny was, but still. I think he was good to really good some seasons, but never great like you said. He lasted 20 years in the league. I would be very surprised if Sanchez makes it to 10.
