first of all, he isn't saying they are all on the same level, he is saying they will each be given equal opportunity to win the starting QB job. the fact that you don't know the difference is why you are an imbecile. telling Smith he will have to beat out Sims isn't admitting anything. secondly, where Smith was drafted he inherently cannot be a draft bust. that term is used for high picks, but for first round picks at the least. No player drafted where Smith was drafted has ever been a bust because the expectations are different, and the expectations of a player based on where he is drafted is what makes a player a bust. by your asinine reasoning, all players who do not work out in the NFL would be busts if Smith is one. sorry, that isn't what a bust means.

If he turns out to be a good player he'll be the best player taken on the 39 in the last decade. A few good players on that list but nobody who is a noticeable bust because as you point out you can't bust on the 39 pick, just fade away.

nugent is the only player on that list considered a bust... and thats only because 2nd round is super high for a kicker. no expected anyting out of boose, hobson, van dyke or yarborough, thats for sure
Nugent was just a nuts over-reaction pick. There are a million kickers out there on the street. It's the most easily replaceable position in football. That, along with the positional value, is why kickers are rarely selected in the draft let alone selected high. The Fins went 17-0 with a soccer player named Yepremian kicking for them. A guy who could barely speak English and didn't know the rules of the game. Drafting a guy in the position he played is like giving away value.
How are Nagle and Clemens not considered busts? Not many 2nd round QBs pan out in the NFL. Hopefully things work out with Geno Smith

Yep. People hated the Nugent pick because A) You just don't draft a kicker that high and B) Because of that ridiculous Jolley trade. The whole reason for that stupid trade and the subsequent drafting of a kicker in the second round was because Herm Edwards made a terrible in-game decision and then scape-goated Brien for it. Cue junc, wrapped bodily in Herm Edwards fatheads, with his tired and inadequate defense of this argument.
He had a hurt QB. Go look at the game sequence and then look at the last game in Pittsburgh a month earlier. I'm pretty sure Herm was thinking that Chad was a good chance to get picked if they went downfield with a couple of throws.
He also had a kicker with a short range of success and all he had to do was not lose yards to stay in that range. Could have had a designed throw-away for an incompletion, could have run the ball up the middle with a great O-line, could have done a number of things. Instead, we kneeled. And lost yards. Because Herm panicked.
1st and 10 1:17 to go on the 26 they give the ball to Curtis and he makes 1 yard. They let the clock run because they're already in FG range. 2nd and 9 0:47 to go on the 25 they give the ball to Jordan and he makes 2 yards. Are they really supposed to call one of their two timeouts here? It's 3rd and 7 and they obviously don't want to throw the ball at this point. 3rd and 7 0:06 to go on the 23 they let Chad position the ball on a keep and call a fast time out. Doug O'Brien was out there for a 43 yard FG. He made 11 FG's from 40-49 in 2004 the second highest number of his career. He was 10/11 from 40-49 in the regular season in 2004. It was a good gamble by Herm. I, BTW, was frustrated out of my mind by the sequence at the time. I didn't understand then that Chad's shoulder was hanging by a thread, something that became obvious in the off-season. It never occurred to me that a QB could actually play QB and complete some passes with a seperated shoulder until I saw Chad do it twice, late in 2004 and then early in 2005 before he went out for the season,
A keep? That wasn't a QB keeper, which is a rush forward and you hold your field position. That was a kneel-down. Which lost yardage. What yard were they on when Brien kicked the ball?
This kind of stuff is so annoying. This fan base is hilarious sometimes. Why is there an entire thread about turning on our brand new GM and QB. The pessimism from this fan base is insane. Give it a chance. Be patient. Always jumping to conclusions. It's never enough for some of us. What in the world do you guys expect? This is a bad team going through a little rebuild.
