so if he went with broken ribs Tebow, or rolled the season to the 3rd stringer with no upside.. then we win 10 games? i don't think so. There was no viable QB option on the roster, which was one of biggest problems with the season.
Payton didn't do much until his defense was solidified (Gregg Williams has done a hell of a work there, if you forgot.) Before then, Saints were the loser everybody loves. Underdogs that play hard, but lose when the king pins roll around. Payton is not the exception - he happens to be quite good at offense, but knows jack shit about defense. And uninformed hater, you say? Give me the names of college coaches who transitioned into NFL and had instant success. Find one - you won't. I gave you plethora of names, littered with college legends, only good enough to fail in NFL. That's uninformed hater opinion? Ok. I'll take that over blind optimism any time of the week. (And twice on Sundays.) P.S. If you think the 'instant success' category was too harsh for the college coaches, then explain to me, why it is such a brilliant idea to hire a college coach that is as clueless as a door knob when it comes to running the show in NFL - especially, at the expense of one of the premier talent in defensive coaching. Do you really think Jets will give that newly minted college coach 10 years to learn the job on the fly? When Ryan couldn't pick up 5? What is that stuff you are smoking, son?
The Redskins has Mike Shanahan, not Chip Kelly like you suggested. Many coaches who worked at the college level, work their way up through coordinator positions in the NFL before HC. The immediate jump from college coach to HC in the NFL typically does not work. And Chip Kelly would be the exact opposite coach of Rex Ryan. All about offense, a college style offense at that. You have to be kidding if you think bringing in Kelly would mean the D stays the same. The choice of Kelly would be completely assinine on the Jets considering what we've been building......a knee jerk reaction in the opposite direction. we've seen enough knee jerk jeactions in the opposite direction on the Jets. Its time to stay the course.

Stephen A. Smith absolutely nailed this when he said Rex should have been fired because he stuck with Sanchez despite having no viable options to replace him. It's the perfect recap of the situation minus the idiotic suggestion to fire a guy who had no good options and so he stuck with the least bad one. I'd have expected him to castigate Rex for not putting Tebow in except Stephen A. Smith is smart enough to realize that his love for Tebow not withstanding there are 32 NFL franchises at this point who don't think Tebow can play QB. Hard to nail Rex for not putting in Tebow in that reality.
Great article. I never understood the complete Rex hate. I understood hating his offensive decisions, but as a DC and as the overseeing HC I think he's been great for the organization all-in-all. You can't just scoff at the two AFC championship appearance, we're only 2 years removed from that. We hadn't gone to a AFC championship since the late 90s! All of a sudden as Jets fans we're going to get impatient and act entitled? We've waited 40 years, one or two more years to be back to Superbowl ready with Rex isn't unbearable. I initially hated the Sheldon Richardson pick at 13, but I've done an almost complete 180 on that pick and the entire draft. I think it's clear Idzik is running a tight ship. I don't think this season will be great, but I think the true test of this Rex + Idzik combo will be how Idzik drafts in 2014 and how Rex utilizes those picks for the 2014 season. 2014 is my real test-year for Rex and Idzik because I think we'll come out of that draft with a stud WR, a stud LB, and a very solid TE. 2014 will be the year of the offensive picks (aside from LB of course).
