Does it concern anyone that the Bills head coach consistently destroyed West Virginia and Geno Smith when he coached Syracuse? Seems like he knows his number.
So look, I have to ask you where you got this from? Yeah, Syracuse beat up on WVU in the slush bowl. Geno Smith was 19-28 for 201 yards, 2 TD's and no Ints on the day. Ryan Nassib was 11-23 for 130 yards, 2 TD's and 1 Int on the day. The Mountaineers lost in that game because when you run an option offense that is predicated on a lot of intricate play and misdirection quickness it really sucks to be playing on a slippery field in bad weather. The Mountaineers rushed for 103 yards and the Orangemen for 369 yards. That's why the Mountaineers lost. You take away a team's running game in the snow and kick yours into high gear and the odds are about 95% you're winning that game running away. In the 2011 game Syracuse took away WVU's running game and rushed for 194 yards themselves. See the pattern here? 2010 was partly on Smith with 3 picks, which will lose every time, but again Syracuse rushed for 183 yards. Nassib was 5-15 for 63 yards on the day. So to answer your question: if Marrone gets the Bills to outrush the Jets 3 to 1 in their matchups and average over 240 yards a game? Yes, I'm concerned about "Geno Smith's" ability to win those games.
Every other team in the division should always be a concern. Remember barring a few games all of our division games and I mean this for all teams they are close games. Bills almost beat NE if Fitz didn't throw the INT in the end zone. We always play each other close... Most of the time but it is always a hard fight that leaves all teams sore on Monday. Only player on the Bills I am afraid of is CJ Spiller. I hold my breath when he gets the ball against us.
I really enjoy your enthusiasm. It really leaps off the page. Those are all good points and I feel better now. You big charmer. *trying not to get banned
I just don't get the point of your post if you are a Jets fan. If you'd looked at the context in which those games were lost the last place you'd have gone was "Doug Marrone dominated Geno Smith". When you rush for 746 yards in 3 games and hold the opponent to 279 rushing yards the odds are excellent that you are blowing them out 3 times in a row without even looking at the QB's in the analysis. Saying that Syracuse dominated WVU is accurate but saying that it was because of anything Geno Smith did or didn't do is kind of silly. Doug Marrone figured out that if you can rush for nearly 250 yards a game and hold your opponent to under 100 you're going to win. Good for him.
That's why I asked the question to begin with because all I heard was how badly he played against Syracuse and he's got little hands, and can't play in the winter etc... At least from what you're saying it was a team loss not something he did badly. I don't think the question was all that crazy, but it's good you're ready for fight, I'm too tired to get into it post lunch. How about a rain check?
I also just watched Geno's throws during that game. I thought he looked pretty good to be honest I don't know why everybody cherry picks that game. He put the ball on his receivers consistently and yeah there were a couple of drops and a couple of throws slightly off the mark as you would expect in those conditions but nothing outrageous. Just watching the plays where Geno threw you really wouldn't even know they'd be getting blown out other than seeing a lot of the quick short throws getting blown up in the backfield or for short gains on plays that would often go for 20+ yards on a fast track.
I like Geno Smith, I think he will be a solid pro if the Jets do not ruin his confidence and I think that is a real possibility. I saw a ton of WV and SU games the last two years. My biggest worry about Geno is the fact that he goes into multi game skids where he does not make the big play when it is needed. When that happens they lost, alot. He was also given two great receivers and many of those TD's were those play-makers taking screens to the house. That said, his numbers, no matter how he got them are impressive. If the Jets do not "Sanchize" him, he could be very good, I think he needs some time and real weapons before you throw him in there. He has smallish hands (which is one reason why I did not like him for Buffalo-we have had too many QB's who struggle with the wind and cold), ala Alex Smith, but in a good system he can throw.
Im not a Smith fan yet, but its West Va that sucked, not Geno. Geno put points up, in most of their losses they gave up too many points,
The way he started the year, it looked like WV was going to be something special. He had a great offense but not much of a Defense.
Every loss in football is a team loss. What other sport dresses and uses 45 players in a game? Football is the ultimate team sport. When will the light bulb go off for you and others that it is not only about the QB? And at the same time we get posts like this wondering about how Geno Smith fared against Syracuse, the same people knock the Smith pick like it was a disaster that will set the franchise back 10 years. So what do you want, 10 more years of Sanchez? A revolving door of journeymen like Garrard? Or shouldn't the Jets try to stabilize the position by picking a first round talent like in the second round when there is a reasonable chance he can be the long term answer at QB?
There are a lot of assumptions made here. But it's good to see the wackos on this site still got a little fire in the belly. I actually think Geno has a bunch of potential but worry about his skill set in the cold winter when small hands get smaller and defenses get caught onto the idea they can get the ball by hitting him. Maybe it wasn't his fault they dropped 6 out of their last 7 games and the entire league decided he wasn't first round talent. Maybe he will fool them all. But I was against the pick because I thought it was pretty clear that the receivers on the team made him look good. I watched his "highlights" which are essentially him throwing the ball 5 yards and then watching the talent take it 70 yards. But I am an optimist at heart and will root for the guy because duh...he's a Jet, man. I think the best case scenario is this guy is the real deal and we sit him for a year while Gerrard stabilizes the offense and then maybe comes in half way through the season and takes the reigns when the old man slows down. Of course the best case scenario is the butt-fumbler realizes something and starts kicking ass and we have like 3 good QBs just waiting to go. I can't believe it, but even after all the attitude dufus 1 and 2, I still don't feel like getting banned tonight. I think it's because I ate 2 good meals today and feel nice and satiated. But I tell you what, why don't you keep the exaggerated responses coming and I will watch some GOT and see if that doesn't get me a little riled up? Heck I'll throw in some whiskey and see if that does the trick. Otherwise, I guess we'll just have to continue having interesting talk about football and our beloved Jets.
I saw a ton of that and I watched many games. However, his stats are eye popping, so only time will tell if his small hands, big numbers and value pick will translate into consistent wins.
Anyone think Holmes could have a huge year if Smith is throwing him the ball? Holmes is basically a better version of Steadman Bailey.
This is really inaccurate though. Geno Smith did throw a ton of passes under 10 yards but he also had a bunch of really pretty throws up the seams and a few glorious post routes. Hitting Tavon Austin in stride over and over again up the seams is a real accomplishment. The guy is fast and he's short. He has the catch window of a high school receiver moving at the speed of an Olympic sprinter. When you can hit him in stride 30 yards up the field consistently you've done a great job. Bailey is a different story because he's not that fast. When Geno Smith hit him in stride there was usually a guy on him and the ball had to be perfectly placed and then Bailey had to be able to corral it with a hand on his shoulder or across his forearm or in his face. I can away from watching the full game videos really impressed with both Smith and Bailey. They had everything down to the point that if the defender wasn't interfering heavily he couldn't stop the connection. Anybody who makes the statement that Geno Smith can't throw the ball downfield is just parroting what they have heard from other sources. Go look at the tape yourself.
If Holmes foot is recovered he could have a big year. It's not clear what the Lisfranc recovery time is in terms of getting your speed back. He could easily be a step slower after the injury and maybe never recover that.
Holmes is a damn good WR. He was on pace for a nice yr before the injury, I think hes better than ppl here give him credit for.... Very shifty with good hands, has made incredible catches in tight spaces. I think he could have +1000 even with Nacho at QB next yr if he plays all 16. All this assuming the injury doesnt ruin his game.
